The stereotypical Gay Man

I have trouble believing any study as far as homosexuality is involved. The truth is that, like it or not, more gay men are still completely closeted than the ones who are out. Grindr is full of "discrete", "DL" "NSA fun" seeking headless torsos with wives and girlfriends, who can barely stomach even referring to themselves as gay (most go as far as "bi") and who I assure you have never been the object of any survey.

So to me anecdotal evidence is much more reliable at this point in time when we're discussing anything related to the gay community and gay culture.

I understand what you're saying but I'm on the opposite end. I have a hard time taking what's usual at the most active gay scenes and extrapolating from that a gay behavior common to most gay men.

Well, I don't judge solely on the most active gay scenes. I have a VERY wide variety of gay experiences - from the atmosphere in the schools I've attended (arts, remember?), through the regular small college town gay scene, to what happens on the dating/hook up sites. I know the types, and while a LOT of guys will rail against promiscuity, I can promise you that half of them will be serial monogamists. I HATE serial dating with a fiery passion, it's so dishonest...

What do you mean by "serial dating"?

That's a very specific brand of very "romantic" gay boy that keeps seeing his next True Love in every guy he meets, instantly gets in a "relationship" with him and somehow ends up breaking up with him within a month with all due drama. And on to the next. It's just like sluts, only dishonest.

Oh I get it. So "I'm not a slut, I just have a new boyfriend every week"?

Well let's say 2 to 4 weeks, but basically yeah.

Serial monogamy. I know guys who do that. I don't really have much of an issue with it, since they tend to be pretty upfront about it. Some people DO manage to convince themselves that they'll be the one that the serial monogamist stays with for years and years...but of course, they almost never are.

I've never liked the term "serial monogamist". How about "slow-motion slut"? :)

Haha, good term!

But I don't really agree. The ones I know have no idea they're doing it. They honestly believe this one is going to be THE one...

They probably convince themselves of that because otherwise they have to grapple with the title of slut. ;)

That's weird. Most of the ones I know basically thought "Hey, I like this guy now" but I never got any sense that they thought they were with their one and only. One of my friends would sarcastically say "So, is this your latest forever lover?" And they'd look embarrassed about it, but not argue the point. :)

At present, the incredibly violent Far Cry 3... I feel a little guilty playing that game right now after recent violence occurring in society. The game is just senselessly violent... other games I play are Tropico 4 (because I love controlling islands like a dictator), Capsized (Steam), and some others...

Don't feel guilty at all. There's absolutely no hard correlation ever shown between videogames and violence, I've been a lifelong gamer, most of my friends have been lifelong gamers. Heck who under 30 ISN'T a gamer anymore?

I want to get Tropico, it seems up my alley. Kinda like city/management right?

Oops off topic.

Well they aren't all deluded, but they also don't go into it with the awareness of how quickly they'll get tired and create drama to get out of it.

Again, that rarely happens with my friends. It's just a routine "I don't think it's working out". They rarely seem to have their eye on anyone at the time, so it's not like ditching one guy for another really.

One such friend and I both liked the comic Circles, so I jokingly called him "Ken" every time he started or stopped another two-month relationship. That was Ken's MO in the strip.

I truly don't care if others see me as a stereotypical gay or not.

I have some "stereotypical" traits, like being a Lady Gaga fan.

I have some non-stereotypical traits, like being into geeky stuff like comics and video games.

I'm not going to change who I am or what I like to satisfy others. If they have a problem, then they need to deal with it.

Let's be honest, how many people do you know who acted "stereotypically gay" who turned out to be straight? I can name one person in my whole life.

I run into them regularly, being told later that those folks were (probably) "straight hipsters" or "sensitive new men" playing househusband taking little Tristan to the zoo (complete with organic cheerios as a snack) while mommy is in court. My ex had a friend who was an effete het; I have a family member who is also one.

I have some non-stereotypical traits, like being into geeky stuff like comics and video games.

That trait seems neutral to me.

Actually, I was at a "Geeks OUT" mixer at Spin last night, and the place was packed. Geekiness is totally a gay trait. Sub-set of a subculture, for sure, but not in the least non-stereotypical ;)
