The use of the "trolling" argument

Over the last few weeks, there has been a growing tendency amongst the pseuds on this site to claim that members are "trolling".

It tends to occur when these members are faced with a point of view that is contradictory to their own. They can not be bothered, or are unable, to engage in a discussion, so simply accuse the member of "trolling".

In the past, other members would employ the phrase "I'm offended" or "That's offensive" in order to close down arguments - accusing a member of trolling is a subtle (albeit cowardly) way of saying "You're an idiot" to a member. This puts the keys into the JUB Bandwagon for every other person to join in...rather like a coop of chickens when they smell blood - Peck-peck-peck-peck-peck.

So, to the people who accuse other members of simply being trolls (or use weasley insinuations to the same), either take part in the thread, start your own thread or fuck off.

There is definitely a cultural chasm existing between some people who regularly post on this board in respect of Ben's well demonstrated willingness to provoke discussion on any given topic, by means that encourages a reaction that peeks our interest in a passionate display of our opinion.

I invite Ben to continue to entice and tantalise us with his satirical posts in his attempts to broaden our understandings, by posting interesting commentary that might well encourage us to be more patient with those opinions that do not sit well with our own prejudices.

The phenomenon seems to be contained to members who can't seem to argue or debate in a direct manner. I don't understand how, when confronted with a contradictory view to a post, they call someone a troll or whinge to a mod that they're somehow being attacked.

Arguing and debating online is vastly different than doing it in person since you can't correctly determine a poster's tone or nuances in speech and often confuse a bold statement with being rude, obnoxious or offensive. Thankfully we have mods who have telepathic abilities and can tell the true meaning of a poster's words.

Trolling is a very serious problem and this place is not immune to its effects. Some individuals do make statements with the sole purpose of creating an emotionally charged atmosphere rather than discussing a particular topic. They are not above ridicule.

I will agree that some lack skill in discussing or expressing their personal opinion on a particular subject. Emotions run high and sometimes we hit the submit button before we take a second look. It happens. Just another aspect of Internet life.

I agree. I also can see Ben's point, partially. The word 'troll' is being overused by some, including me. I didn't realize what was going on until I found out that Ben sees his provocative threads as "debates." They tend to start with a provocative, even outrageous statement, and then just say "Discuss." He has denied elsewhere that he even agrees with the statements at the top!

Unless you know that he sees them as debates, this seems like classic troll behavior. For example, we have a classic troll here, with an all-lowercase seven-letter name and a tendency to take an outrageous position and then end the initial post with "Any thoughts?" He's not trying to have a debate, he's trying to piss people off and then sit back and watch them fight. He comes in later and tells us he really doesn't believe that, of course, which is supposed to make it OK. It doesn't; he's a troll.

The trouble is that Ben's thread posts have a superficial resemblance to these posts, to which many of us, including me, have become hypersensitized. Our immune system reacts to the pattern and says "TROLL!!!!" And we get all flushed, our hearts beat faster, our eyes start to itch, we break out in hives, and if untreated this is followed by anaphylactic shock and death.

Oh wait, got carried away there.

Come to think of it, maybe that's a British thing. Make a statement and say "Discuss" or "What are your thoughts?" and that means "we're having a debate here." It doesn't mean that to me; I'm not sure that's an Atlantic-divide kind of thing, but it may be. If so, it might explain greaves partially as well; but in his case he's just using the debate frame to cloak his trolling.

OK, now here's where I have a solution to propose. I'd be very surprised if Ben takes it up, because...well, certain words have been exchanged between us (words like "Fuck off"). But here it is anyway: Label debate threads with "Debate topic:" so those of us not in the mood for a debate will stay away, and those of us who are will know what to expect. In general it's not unreasonable to expect that a sentence you type in a post is your own point of view, so even within such a clearly-labeled thread it might be a good idea to say "Post for or against the following" before the statement to be debated.

In general, if people don't understand what I'm saying, then barring malicious misinterpretation on their part the problem is mine: I haven't been clear. The above suggestion (and it is no more than that) is designed to help clarify the intention of someone who wants to start a debate thread. I don't see Ben as wanting to avoid clarity and generate more heat than light, in contrast to greaves. Wanting that (the heat, not the light) is what we mean when we say trolling, and trolling can't be tolerated because it destroys communities. I've seen it over and over.

And if that experience has made me misjudge you, BenF46, I really sincerely apologize.

Someone accusing you of trolling invites you to show that you're not just trolling by substantiating what you're talking about or showing that what you're saying is more than just a spoof or a meaningless provocation.

It doesn't stop genuine debate, which either ignores troll-spotting or argues the criticism on its merits.

What it does do is make people think twice about joining in a jack off, if it looks like that's all that going on.
