McCarthy had R-222 vs D-213 in 2023. 15 rounds of voting before they got a Speaker. McCarthy had to sell away his power to get elected, which doomed him to be a feckless Speaker that no one was afraid of. He lasted 9 months.

After McCarthy was recalled (and he pissed off the Democrats to the point he got no Democratic votes to save his Speakership from the Republican mutiny), it took 4 nominees and 3 weeks of infighting before Johnson came out of the back-bench and was elected Speaker.

Johnson goes into 2025 with R-220 vs D-215. He's down 1 vote unless Gaetz shows up. The process is "majority present and voting 'yea' (i.e. not voting "present")". He has to get all 220 members to show up (at least a couple of them are up for positions in the Trump Administration) and he has to beat the 215 votes that Jeffries will get.
