The recruits have had criminal backgrounds or failed drug tests or were unable to meet physical or academic standards, raising concerns about the agency’s rush to hire immigration officers, sources told NBC News.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed new recruits into its training program before they have completed the agency’s vetting process, an unusual sequence of events as it rushes to hire federal immigration officers to carry out President Donald Trump’s mass deportation policy, a current and two former Homeland Security Department officials told NBC News.

ICE officials only later discovered that some of the recruits failed drug testing, have disqualifying criminal backgrounds or don’t meet the physical or academic requirements to serve, the sources said.

Staff members at ICE’s training academy in Brunswick, Georgia, recently discovered one recruit had previously been charged with strong-arm robbery and battery stemming from a domestic violence incident, the current DHS official said. They’ve also found as recently as this month that some recruits going through the six-week training course hadn’t submitted fingerprints for background checks, as ICE’s hiring process requires, the current and former DHS officials said.

When asked about the incident, the propaganda shop at DHS said that their human resources department was overwhelmed by 150,000 applications after ICE announced that they would pay a $50,000 sign on bonus to new agents. Apparently, all those unemployed Proud Boys and washed up Hollywood actors need the $50K.

In the past, ICE agents received 13 weeks of training. That has been cut down to 6 weeks.

Even with the big bonuses and the reduced training, 30% of the recruits flunk out of the program. Why? Because the end of the training requires a physical fitness test where they must run 1.5 miles in 15 mins, do 15 pushups and 32 situps. The recruits can't pass the physical fitness test!

I think the turnover is still pretty high as the thrills wear off on and the weaker ones fall by the wayside.

Hence the new signing incentives.

The worrisome thing is that ICE will be distilled into a killing force of psychpaths as happens in authoritarian regimes.
 
It just pisses me off that the Republicans are sitting by while the Department of Education is gutted. They can't find $50,000 to offer to people who are interested in becoming teachers.

Yet, they are dumping billions into this ill-conceived pogrom, which includes $50,000 signon bonuses AND student loan forgiveness.

Says something about the priorities and the pessimistic future for American education.
 
Well we know most ICE agents will not have gone to college so that was a cheap give away.

But yes, under a white nationalist, xenophobic government, the future is incredibly dark for most US children. And it will be a downward spiral as the middle class becomes the lower midlle class and the poor become hopeless.

I suspect that as AI replaces white collar workers, higher education will be folly. We'll end up with a society that needs low-skill manual laborers and a lot of technicians who maintain the equipment that does the work.
