As it is currently 2016, a news report from 2014 would be 2 years old as opposed to 4. But in the world of NEWS, even a matter of days (sometimes hours) is enough to mark the story as old. Surely a measurement of months...... By the time it reaches the age of one year? Definitely "old news", might as well say geriatric as so much has happened since it was reported.

With advance notice, most airlines are willing to make accomadations for most, reasonable requests. Otherwise, they might need to pay extra for empty seating.
 
This still happens now, im sure. Its a part of their religious beliefs, which whether they be ridiculous or not should be respected. That being said, they should give notice ahead of time if they feel uncomfortable sitting next to a woman. It is something that they should be thinking about ahead of time considering that there is a good chance a woman will be sitting next to you.
