Additionally, AZ State Senator Ron Gould, sponsor of the bill, said he "sees nothing wrong with honouring a firearm for its contribution to the state's western heritage".

This asshat went on to say to gun-control activists who denounced the measure as insulting and a waste of time when the state is facing serious economic problems:

"We spent about 120 seconds of committee time on that bill, so it's not like it takes an overwhelming amount of time. Generally, everybody asking why we are doing this takes longer than actually doing it."

Unreal. Simply, unreal. *shakes head*
 
Didn't Utah just do this...and designate the very same make of gun that was used in Tucson?

That's even worse than Aridzone actually designating a weapon which was NOT the make and model used in the mass murder.

Arizona adopted the Browning M1911 semiautomatic pistol. It is quite historical and deserving of recognition, but I don't see the point of making it an official state firearm -- OTOH, if you want to have one, it's not a bad one. Actually I'm not sure if the process is finished; I know it passed their house but I don't know about the senate.

Before the 1911, the Colt Single Action Army Revolver was probably the most important sidearm in the country, serving pioneers and military alike. It's also quite worthy of being honored.
 
What's unreal is the whining being spent on this. The Arizona selection especially is something any knowledgeable American should support, given its place in the westward expansion of the country and a couple of wars. While the idea was already under consideration, this is a good time to have a passed -- it's a symbolic way of saying to the morons and authoritarians that the fault in the recent assassination attempt and murders lies not with mechanical devices, and more laws concerning them would be an insult to the memories of those slain.

Though whether they'll do the obvious step of empowering public institutions, such as universities, which identify people as dangerous to themselves and/or others to compel those individuals to undergo an evaluation or be put on the NICS system, and vote funding for such a program, is another matter.

I certainly question the **timing** of this bill in Aridzone. Almost as though they were saying that "recently we were reminded about the really good things that guns can do." (In other words, it's "good" that Giffords was shot...no doubt some of the fucktards in the legislature would love to see her dead.) They've had decades and decades when they could have passed this bill. Why now?
 
It's a symbolic vote that state legislatures do. State bird, state flower, official motto. It's fluff, that's all. I'm sure we've wasted more time hating on Arizona in this thread then they did in considering this bill.

The Colt SAA is a great choice for a state firearm. It played a very important role in the westward expansion of the US. John Browning was from Utah, so the 1911 was a logical choice for them.

As to the whiney anti-gunners. Must suck to be you guys these days!

The adoption of a State bird, or flower, or fluffy animal I can see as a benign bit of local pride and tourist glitter, as they invariably are things which can be found in the State in question.

As far as I can see the only link Colt has to Arizona is that some Arizonans used Colt weapons to kill other Arizonans. Colt are from Connecticut. Perhaps the particular model being glorified was used to kill more people than any other gun?

The notion of a State Firearm is, in my opinion, inherently offensive, particularly to anyone who has been on the receiving end of a bullet.

If it catches on, maybe New York could adopt the switchblade and knuckleduster as it's official state weapons, or perhaps Germany could have Zyklon B as it's official state gas.

The tie that Colt has to all of the American West, is that it help settle and ultimately civilize it. Remember, there was no law in places like Arizona to speak of before they became states. You had no police to call, it was your responsibility to protect yourself. Colt along with Winchester were the tools that kept you and your family safe.
