Sorry if this is a re-run thread but my roomie (who doesn't know I'm bi) said over this past weekend to me that he thinks most guys who are exclusively homosexual were molested repeatedly as children. This causes them to keep engaging in homosexual behavior when they get older (since they think that's what sex is) especially if the molestation occurs right before puberty, which is arguably the most important and dangerous part of your developmental period. He's a part-time student and is taking a bunch of psych classes so I took what he said with a grain of salt initially but now I'm wondering if it's true. I've certainly always kinda wondered if that was the case with me...any thoughts guys? Any of you guys go thru that as kids too? At this point, I feel comfortable enough here at JUB to admit that I have but I understand if you guys can't. Are there any psychiatrists on here who might have an objective answer without getting mad at me?? I'm not trying to start some "gay is abnormal" thread so please don't flame. That is not my point at all.

I apologize to those who might have been expecting one of my usual idiotic threads.

Actually one of the soccer moms at my school wrote an article an the national newspapaer saying that all the homosexuals opposed gay marriage cause they were molested as children, that idiotic BITCH.

:bs:

Nope, never molested as a kid, and I'm gay. Guess that blows a hole in that theory, eh?

not really phoenix. what matters in studying the behavior of a given population is whether or not something applies to a significant portion of that population...a majority or even just significant minority within that population. it doesn't have to apply to every single person within a group for it to be true.

perhaps i should have phrased it something like "do you believe that most homosexuals were molested as children and that's why they're gay?"

So if your bi you were just minerly diddled---instead of being molested all the time? Nope never been touched in my bad places by any bad people.

To my best of my knowledge, no. I seem to remember "something" happening once at the park, but whatever the heck it was was a one-time dealybob, and certainly not repetitive.

Hey James. Over on the right hand side of the second blue bar is the "SearchV" button. Click it. You'll see a window pop open with a search bar. Type a keyword in like "molested" and then move your mouse over to the "Go" button and click that too. Your browser will take you to a list of 110 search results. You should be able to find your answer there without having to ask forumers to relive their abuse...|

I had a babysitter try to jerk me off. I was 11 and she was 17.

James, I remember these threads, maybe they'll help you.

Ever Been Molested........

Does being sexually abused make you gay?

thanks guys. i'll do a search. and mattie, tho it's all very wrong, statuary rape of a child is not as scarring as forcible rape. i'm not minimizing what your piece of shit baby-sitter did but it just doesn't compare to an extended (over years or months), physically scarring rape which i assume would be what would trigger homosexual behavior later on in life.

and just_believe, my intention was absolutely not trying to make anyone relive it so i apologize. it's just something that pops into my head occasionally and it's just easier for me to talk to people on here about this cause it's largely anonymous on JUB. i can't discuss this kinda stuff with family or friends or anyone i know. it would just be too weird and not something i talk about in "real life". and i was also just curious about whether there is some correlation between child rape and adult homosexuality...i'll keep looking but so far i don't see the answer in the above threads.

I think you have more than one question:

- Does the general public believe that most homosexuals were molested as children? How common is that belief?
- Do gay men believe that most homosexuals were molested as children? How common is that belief?

No scientific evidence is needed to support a specific belief. Part of the general public and members of LGBT community have strong beliefs based on personal experience, social stigma, misinformation, etc. Those individual beliefs may disagree with the status of scientific evidence on this issue.

A different question is the availability of scientific evidence supporting those beliefs:
- What do we know about the prevalence of sexual abuse?
- How many children identify themselves as homosexuals after the event?
- Is the event (sexual abuse) a causal factor or an independent event in terms of sexual identity?

A good amount of scientific research on sexual abuse has been conducted in the last decades. The hypothesis of a causal relationship between abuse and homosexuality is far from new (same with the hypothesis that homosexuality is triggered by dominant mothers and weak father figures). Some researchers have established a causal relationship between abuse and homosexuality in individual/isolated cases, but that's far from a universal or prevalent truth. At the same time a significant number of documented victims of abuse (same sex) are heterosexual adults and many homosexual men and women have never experienced abuse.

tallguy297 started a great thread on abuse that provided a good insight into the individual experience:

thanks yves. that's a lot to wade thru but fascinating.

To answer the question: No, thank God, I was never molested. If I was, I can't remember it.

And as for that "theory" you mentioned that gay people were gay because they were molested? That is a generalization, in my opinion. I don't believe that applies to EVERY gay person, but I will share a few instances that it might apply to.

As for why it's not entirely true:
I have had several female members of my family that were molested as children, and none of them are gay. They do, however, have lots of issues, and thus resulting in troubled marriages (trust being a major problem), but no "struggling sexuality" issues.

As for how that "theory" might apply:
I knew of a guy that had been molested/raped by his father since he was a kid, and it resulted in him being bisexual. Would he have been bisexual if he wasn't abused? Possibly. But I can't help but think that in his case, it had something to do with it.

I know of a lesbian that was molested as a child, and was straight for the early part of her life. She went through marriage and had 2 kids. One day her husband came out of the bathroom naked, and she had a flashback from her childhood abuse, and it caused her so much marital problems, that she ended up getting divorced and decided to "go lesbian." She is now with a lesbian partner.

So, while that theory may apply to some, I don't believe that it applies to everyone.

Nope, though I had a neighbor that tried. He always tried to get me to go in his house when I was 12ish...but I said no. About 8 years later after I moved they found out he raped like 12 kids my age and killed one during that time.

I had a grade school basketball coach expose himself to me repeatedly when I was about 12. It was confusing for me because I enjoyed it. And then later, when I realized that I was only attracted to boys and not girls I wondered if I had caused it by looking at the coach.

It took me many years to decide that it was my homosexuality that made me want to look at him and not vice versa.
