What’s With Mindy’s White-Guy Obsession on ‘The Mindy Project’?

I am inside my own group with all the rest of the world. I am always in charge of my own opinion. You are trying very hard to see things in my writing that I've not written there.

If you go back to my first post in this thread, it was to say this Mindy on the show I've never seen or heard of should date an east asian guy who should be written into the cast of the show I've never seen or heard of, which is apparently your goal too. And that it seems a little creepy to me when characters are colour coordinated all the time. Interracial couples are normal. People, and TV characters should not be confined to monoracial couples, because it looks faker than a 1970's pantsuit to be so matchy-matchy. Life isn't like that, and pretending that is diverse television is foolish. A white guy is not a status symbol. But neither is an asian guy, so why not cast him as Mindy's next fling. The main point was, however, this is TV. Not a supreme court nomination. Not a space shuttle launch. Not a Nobel Prize. TfuckingV.

I expressed no such opinion on what the dating show "should do."

In fact I have rather routinely discussed the lack of not just interracial pairings, but CERTAIN interracial pairings which have social ramifications and create certain social perceptions. Which is where much of the conversation had moved by the time I entered it.

Don't claim I'm rewriting your posts as you rewrite mine.

I thought you wanted to see asian men cast as romantic leads. Yes? Well I recommended that.

And I was not attributing to you at all the position that interracial couples are for some reason doubleplus bad. I was recapping all of my first post, where I was speaking against that view.

What is this, pick on Bankside day?

Not that I'm opposed to such a day, mind you....

I love when folks things like "I've never seen ________" and people respond shocked.

It is... incredibly easy not to watch TV. Like ridiculously easy. Especially shitty TV.

But actually easy not to watch damn good TV. As simple as leaving the house and having a life.

First thing that came mind when I read your OP was, "Who's the target audience for this show?" Second thing was, "Does Spec actually watch this show?"

I'm still unsure on both accounts.

Do White guys like Indian bottoms?

There's this White guy on Craigslist in the L.A. section who frequently posts about how he wants to meet an Indian top........and I'm like dammit! Why couldn't you be a masculine White top looking for an Indian bottom!?! *%%*

I think it goes both ways. There are bottoms who don't like Indian tops because they don't see them as "masculine"/"dominant" enough and there are tops who like Indian bottoms for pretty much the opposite reason. I think people who go by racial stereotypes are assholes, though, and not the majority. If you're really unable to find any masculine white guys who want to fuck you, then the problem probably lies with you, not your race.

Anyways, as one gay Desi to another; you're missing out. It's all about dem black guys. ;)

OMG, I have a White-Guy obsession too!! I wish White guys would notice me though. :( It's so frustrating!!! I know straight White guys who have told me before how hot & sexy they find Indian women..........but gay White guys only go for other gay White guys.....WHY!?! *%%*

I've heard the opposite - lots of straight white guys saying that they aren't attracted to Indian women because they're usually darker skinned, with prominent noses and more body hair; pretty much the opposite of the blonde, busty Swedish girls that straight white guys usually put on a pedestal.

Anyway, this show is just embarrassing. Mindy is ugly yet has the audacity to refer to herself as 'sexy' and 'hot' in every episode. She also casts herself alongside men who wouldn't give her the time of day IRL. It's pretty cringe-worthy.

The ONE thing I know about The Mindy Project is, apparently, James Franco being on it(for an episode, joining the cast, whatever) was a BIG DEAL to the network. Damn the namesake star or the other people that were on it last season, MOTHERFUCKING JAMES FRANCO IS GONNA BE ON SO WATCH US PLEASE!!!

That told me all I needed to know about The Mindy Project right there. The fact that she only seems to date white guys? I'm trying to think of a recent show where that interracial trend is reversed or even bucked in its' totality, and the ONLY thing I can think of that I actually (used to) watch is The Walking Dead, with the Asian guy, whose name I can't remember, falling in love with a white woman.

So yeah, despite what some posters seem to bitch and groan about, the complaint has some merit. There's really not a lot of equality - unless you show up on a Tyler Perry dramacon, and if you do that I feel bad for you.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeellll no, I don't watch that garbage! But my heart goes out to south Asian men in America who grow up to see men of their race only portrayed as goofy, nerdy and ANYTHING other than sexy.

Sayid from Lost was portrayed as 'sexy' IMO.

I only saw the first two seasons of the walking dead but the Asian guy totally seemed stereotyped in that the girl he fell in love with seemed to have a lot more balls than he did.

I tend to stay in most nights..and I still find it pretty easy to not watch shitty TV...or even good TV. It's just a matter of not turning it on.

Not eating tasty snacks I have in the house? That one's tougher.

I sometimes think that it's the creative freedom of what the producers want to portray in their tv shows. So yes, maybe it's not a true representation of what a woman of a minority ethnic background is like in real life and that the dating options seem limited judging by the number of white guys she was seen dating. But would that really affect women of non-caucasian background? Would they really see Mindy as a role model, knowing that it's a rom com?

Anyway, this show is just embarrassing. Mindy is ugly yet has the audacity to refer to herself as 'sexy' and 'hot' in every episode.

isn't that the joke? in no universe is she "ugly," but with her overly high self-esteem, she sees herself as a 10 while the guys around her are correctly pegging her as a 6.

There's a seemingly crazy formulation dating back to the 19th century that divides the world's population into Caucasoid, Mongoloid and Negroid categories. Indians are a subset of the Caucasoid, Northern Europeans are another, so perhaps by that standard Mindy is white.

I'm now convinced that at least a third of hot topics either starts out as a "provocative" discussion on race...or devolves into one by the time the thread heads toward the archive.

While I don't believe these discussions should be stifled and certainly not discouraged. I just wonder why JUB seems to have an obsession with talking about OTHER people and the choices they make regarding who they choose to fuck or date. In this case the show is called "The MINDY project" If Mindy prefers White men...then they will be featured. It is her show...not yours. If you like all the colors of the rainbow and you manage to be successful enough to write and produce your own show....feature it.

FURTHERMORE, considering that we are speaking of the minority...does it not follow that there is a minority of leading black male actors? Do you really think her show has the budget to get Terrance Howard, or Morris Chestnut to be her man? I'm not saying that there is a shortage of quality black men to portray her love interest (Key word: Portray) but considering that they are the minority in the overall population...it follows that they are also the minority in Hollywood (ESPECIALLY Hollywood).

And while I'm not calling it stupid to consider every show on television a social commentary....this is not. It just isn't. Considering it is on FOX - they have "The Simpsons" as their flagship social commentary - and considering it is animated and the majority of characters are yellow or varying other colors - the social commentary is able to be delivered without infringing on racial lines often times. The creator of the show notes that on many occasions. Because in most cases - when watching "The Simpsons," race is not perceived and it allows the show-runners to make the commentary without inflaming racial tension. (As a sidenote to that - I am not saying that "The Simpsons" has never inflamed tension...However, I'm saying that if Fox wants to make a social commentary they certainly don't lack the means or the vehicle to do so.)

I like "The Mindy Project" because I'm Indian, just like Mindy Kaling. I'm also overweight, just like Mindy Kaling. And I wish I could have hunky white men wanting to date me, just like Mindy's character.

I could totally be Mindy Kaling's gay best friend!! :)

Enjoy it while you can - she's got a date with the bear. And no, not this kind.

OMG Thank you for this thread

I'm an Indian-American gay man (same ethnicity as Mindy Kaling). Just like Mindy Kaling's parents, my parents immigrated to the US from India.

OMG, I have a White-Guy obsession too!! I wish White guys would notice me though. :( It's so frustrating!!! I know straight White guys who have told me before how hot & sexy they find Indian women..........but gay White guys only go for other gay White guys.....WHY!?! *%%*

White gay men never notice me..........they only go for White guys, or occasionally Latino or Asian guys. But never Indian guys.....

It's so annoying! White gay men love to talk about "diversity", "inclusion" etc etc, they move to diverse cities like NYC or San Francisco, but then all of their boyfriends are as white as they are.

Life is really hard being an Indian bottom!!

I somehow think you've missed the entire point of this thread.
