  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

What is a 'gay man?', an article I'm writing

So I just need to ask... I hate Glee, I hated Charmed, I'm aggressive, I like to explore, I know fuck-all about fashion (and don't care to), I'm not empathetic and I've been called a bully on more than one occasion.

OK, more than 100 occasions.

Does this mean that Sinttak is a complete fucking moron or does it mean I'm a straight guy who sucks cock?

OP, I think you would have made some interesting points if you had not generalized. There are always circumstances, though you lumped all gay men into one category. Not all gay men are the same, not all straight men are the same, and not all women are the same. While I know the general public seems to think of limp wrist-swishy-Cher loving-lisp speaking-bottom when thinking of gay men, but by now we should know better ;)

Now I'm going to read the responses and see if Jasun has posted. That should be good for a laugh. Jasun. . . not a man. . . yeah, right.

Wow. That's probably one of the most offensive things I've seen here in a LONG time.

Well, what do you know? I was right! :gogirl:

Wow, you're way off, and rather offensive, quite honestly.

What is a gay man?

A men who likes other men, and exclusively other men.

Done.

What is a gay man?

A gay man is a different gender of humans, a combination of male and female genders. Gay men aren't men, but they aren't women, either - we gay men are in a class of our own. This mixture is simply a natural occurrence in nature, and all part of the diversity of life. Gay men can't go away or 'stop being gay' because, we are just a part of nature. And we were born with brains and body chemistry that are a mixture of two genders, observe any gay man and you can see how obviously true this is.

gay men are usually born with:

A female's heart, female emotions

more sensitive than other males, whether this is in a 'receptive way' or a projecting way, ie the macho bully archtype, gay guys let things 'get under their skin' more than most ppl.

A sex drive that's exactly like a straight man's, ie we like nasty throat fucks and spit and hot nasty sex for sex's sake stuff

The possibility to be just as macho as straight guys, but obviously it's not as pure, even if a gay man is good at sports and masculine-stuff, he still almost always knows how to write well and do gender atypical stuff.

Enjoy tv shows like charmed, buffy and xena, and stuff about superheroes. Enjoy lifetime television.

Great aesthetic eye for fashion and visual stimulants. Being addicted to pornography is common, as well as higher increase for drug and alcohol addiction and all forms of addiction.

Understand ideals very well, and philosophy and psychology. Natural brain for that sort of stuff. Not as good with mechanical stuff, generally.

Higher level of intuition, empathy, creativity. Lower levels of violence and aggression.

Isn't as adventurous as straight men, doesn't 'explore' a lot, unless it's for a sexual thrill. Prefers stability and peace. Great at making music because 'getting lost in one's own introversion' is great for making music, as well as writing.

Sure, gay men may have a lot of masculine qualities, and we do- but we also always have a lot more female qualities in us, unlike regular men. This is natural and explains why gay dudes love being taken care of and 'swept off our feet' like women do.

((Straight guys don't talk about their feelings all Oprah-like like gay men do, sorry they just don't. they are tougher, because they are more man than you- but this shouldn't be viewed as a negative thing either. Gay guys are just DIFFERENT, and that's OKAY.))

Therefore it's pointless to get defensive over stereotypes since stereotypes are based on truth. However, it is hurtful when people mock gays because they are exaggerating our natural girlishness. this can be funny but at the same time nobody likes to always be the joke, so instead of getting all emo about it tho, just do it back to straight guys.
=)

K some things need to be pointed out.

Now for my response. First this. Is this a joke? I know random shit is posted on hot topics all the time and people like to be sarcastic asses at times. But do you honestly believe this?

A gay man does not have a women's heart, woman's emotions and is more sensitive. First off some people in general do not wish to show their emotions and some do. Some are able to feel more than others do. Some like to feel more than others. This applies to straight, gay, bi, trans, woman, man, and so forth.

Second. Have you EVER heard of teen angst? You ever see all those emo kids getting so sensitive about every damn thing whether or not they are straight and gay. You ever see that sometimes masculine men such as jocks have absolutely no self confidence or inner strength and just create a false image of bullshit and macho-ness. And than any little thing pisses them off.

Yes some men do keep things inside and don't talk about things. These type of men who don't talk about their problems, keep things inside, try to act tough fake, masculine, and so forth. Those aren't even real men. Those are a bunch of pansy ass cowards. Those are the real faggots if you will. If you really think that those types of people are more macho or cool like. You need to see the world.

You are partially correct that stereotypes are based on some truth. But it might not be the whole truth or just part of the truth. The ones who scream the loudest, the ones who wear drag, the ones who act fem, or artistic. They are going to get the spotlight and do you know why? Because those are the ones that feed the stereotype which you and others believe in. That way you don't have to try to understand and explore gay people. Why bother because gays are just a bunch of sensitive sissy artistic pacifists right?

Let's face it. You rarely see a butch man represented as someone who is either a role model or someone in the gay spotlight or media. It's always the twinks, the drag queens, the models, artists, singers, and etc. However not everyone turns to those role models or figures. Some people use non gay figures. Figures or models who represent masculinity, strength, and responsibility. If someone wants to model themselves after the stereotypes because they don't have anyone else than that's either their choice. But let's be realistic do you truly believe that everyone is like that?

If gays are so introverted, so artistic, and so intuitive than do you really think we'd be that retarded stereotype you labelled us as? Ask yourself that.

And the way you wrote this really sounds like a joke or that you are just being an ass. Especially the sex part.

And for the record I'm gay and I like punk, rock, metal, dance, r&b, pop, and even some oldies. I don't give a fuck about glee, desperate housewives, the jersey shore, and dancing with the stars. I like shows that are violent, stupid, controversial, offensive, funny, serious, fantasy, and mystery type. I don't care for twinks that much or muscular guys. I love older guys and furry guys. I have no sense of rhythm, I can't swish, and I'm a gamer. I also fucking love sex. Fucking, sucking, kissing, vanilla, passionate, rough, kink, anonymous, voyeur, and so forth. I'm much more adventuresome and driven than just in the sex area.

And fuck Martha Stewart and Lifetime television. Oh and yeah. I'm not bad at making pastries :P

I'm not butt hurt or emo because of you're post. It's just that I honesty did at one point think that most gay men are just a bunch of feminine and sensitive creatures. But once you look past the stereotypes, make some gay friends, and immerse yourself in a community, family, or relationship, you'll see that not only are gays creatures that are totally impossible to comprehend in every shape and form. But that people in general are just about the same. I recommend you burn this paper and take the F for not turning in an assignment and right about something else. Explore the world more and I think you'll think much differently than this narrow minded view.

If you want your article to be taken seriously; i think it would help if you would have to define what gender is first (based on references other than yourself); then define the deliniation between/among genders (also baed on references other than yourself) and then explain why gay mean are a particular gender.

This is as far as I got before I said to myself, "Is this guy serious?" Most of your obvious observations don't apply to me, nor do they apply to most of the gay people I've met in my life.

What did you do? Google 'gay stereotypes' and do a Copy/Paste thing?

Now I'm going to read the responses and see if Jasun has posted. That should be good for a laugh. Jasun. . . not a man. . . yeah, right.

Almost none of his observations about straight males apply to my friends.

As a general note: you're extrapolating natural states of being from societal norms about gender, for which you have no real evidence. People are conditioned by the society around them to fulfill certain expectations. Straight men might (and generally are in our society) be encouraged to suppress their emotions, just as gay men might be permitted, or even required to express them in a particular way. Have you ever stopped and thought about the way that effeminate stereotypes were promulgated in American television, going back to the 1950s? It's because in that role, they were regarded as (usually) harmless eunuchs.

Have you also ever considered the fact that we do not know the full extent of homosexuality? Surely it has crossed your mind that there are many closeted gay men out there who don't come out not only because they fear rejection, but because they don't correspond to homosexual norms.

And where do bisexuals or lesbians fit into your paradigm? Why is it when sexuality is brought up, it's always treated as essentially male and dichotomous?

EDIT: Also, I'm wondering how gay men simultaneously engage in anonymous, purely physical sex while also being sensitive and beholden to their emotions in a way that's stereotypically female.

Actually, I don't really wonder. It's because an individual is never one thing all the time, regardless of sex or sexual orientation. Gay men aren't simultaneously two things while straight men and straight women (again, where are the bisexuals and the lesbians et al?) are one thing, one set of qualities. We're a tremendously complex species and we're inherently contradictory, both as groups and as ourselves. And that's not to say that you can't draw general inferences. But you have to be very careful about you consider to be 'natural' behaviour. As it stands, I find your views incredibly offensive towards men and women, regardless of sexuality.

Your profile says you're 27. It looks like it was written by a middle school student. It's chock fucking full of stereotypes and fallacies.

It's just something that gay men don't want to hear.

Could it possibly be because gay men don't like to be told how they should act because they don't correspond to some or any of these commandments?

Professor?

I'm too lazy to go back and re-read your article but if I re-call correctly you either said or insinuated that gays are for the most part intelligent

In a manner of speaking, but his article rather contradicts that, doesn't it?

Maybe he's straight. I've heard they're all like that. :D

Or it could be that he's gay and can only recognise effeminate gays and queens, and that's what he's based his observations and his entire article on.

There's at least as much bullshit in these replies as there is in the original post. Pot. Kettle black.

--"Gay men are just straight men who like cock". Bzzt. Wrong. Anyone who knows anything about genetics & molecular biology knows that genes may have a primary purpose but usually have far reaching consequences that may be totally unrelated to their main purpose. No gene is likely to have only a single trait related to it.

--"There is nothing effeminate about Jasun". Then please don't post photos of your über gay apartment (and I mean that in the nicest way, it's beautiful).

--"I know straight guys that are more feminine than me". Oh, no, it's "only gay in the village" syndrome! No, all your friends are not straight even if they say they are; there are closeted guys and guys in denial among your friends, whether you admit it or not.

--"a straight guy would be pissed if you called him effeminate". I wouldn't be so sure about that. Its mostly the gay guys in denial or in the closet who get offended about that. A straight guy would just blow off the comment because he knows it's not true.

Let me repeat: the OP was way over the top with the specific details, but really, tell me you don't know lots of guys that are easily offended (like evryone who posted here) or have very specific tastes (whether it's pop music or guns) or who are much more likely to pamper themselves or be into sci-fi/fantasy or comics or collectors of any kind (from stamps to antiques to clocks to cars to motorcycles to leather to guns to stereo equipment).

One of the GREATEST THINGS about gay guys is their sensitivity. Even the roughest toughest guy reveals a sensitive tender side. Straight men bore me, because they don't have this sensitivity.

Yes, I have friends like that. And they're all straight. Most of the gay men I tend to interact with (actually all of them, unfortunately) despise the hobbies I'm interested in. They wouldn't be caught dead at a comic-book convention, and shopping doesn't extend beyond clothes and Ikea. Most of the gay men I know (again, unfortunately) wouldn't - as Dan Savage so wonderfully put it - know an honest emotion if it blew a three-day load down their throats.

Unlike you however, I don't draw a broad and inherently inaccurate generalization from this, and assume all or most gay men I will meet will be narcissistic Sex and the City acolytes. Nor do I assume that every straight friend I have is gay simply because he enjoys a damn hobby. That's an unbelievably arrogant, and in this case, factually wrong assumption to make. I cannot believe anyone can seriously draw such a broad generalization about what gay men and straight men must be like. What den of caricatures and outdated stereotypes are you surrounding yourself with?

--"There is nothing effeminate about Jasun". Then please don't post photos of your über gay apartment (and I mean that in the nicest way, it's beautiful).

Um... I live in a house. Although if your'e talking about the picture of my loft I posted 5 years ago, I don't think that was über gay at all. Had some odd decor choices but it wasn't much different from my straight friend's places.

--"I know straight guys that are more feminine than me". Oh, no, it's "only gay in the village" syndrome! No, all your friends are not straight even if they say they are; there are closeted guys and guys in denial among your friends, whether you admit it or not.

Well, and again... most of my friends are straight men and yes... there are a few more feminine ones who, once you get to know them, realize that they're just... kinda effeminate straight men.

One of the GREATEST THINGS about gay guys is their sensitivity. Even the roughest toughest guy reveals a sensitive tender side. Straight men bore me, because they don't have this sensitivity.

I don't think that at all. I've known plenty of straight men who are very sensitive and unguarded and kind.

Most of my friends are men. Virtually all. evenly split between straight and gay. And honestly, people have come to parties at my house and had trouble figuring out which ones were which. That's not me bragging. It's just me telling it like it is.. we're just guys.

I just happen to like to fuck men. One in particular.

The most openly sensitive I've ever seen a man be was my father, when my sister was in the hospital. I guess he must be gay, since straight men are inherent sociopaths.
