But seriously, FDR did not have the use of his legs. When not in his wheelchair, he often used crutches. When speaking at a podium, everyone thought he was actually standing. If he had his legs amputated, he wouldn't have been able to do that. Made a big difference in public perception. (strength v. weakness)
