What to do about North Korea.

I also agree with Kissinger in the #1 spot.

You spread right wing talking points and propaganda so you would never acknowledge this...I get it....

He was an arrogant elitist, but definitely effective.

And he rather proved the benefits of having seriously educated people at the top.

Some progress towards reducing tensions on the Korean peninsular:

I quote:
China has told North Korean companies operating in its territory to close down as it implements United Nations sanctions against the reclusive state. The companies will be shut by early January. Joint Chinese and North Korean ventures will also be forced to close. China, Pyongyang's only major ally, has already banned textile trade and limited oil exports.

Looks like progress in China's functioning as a responsible nation, too.

And the North can't complain; China has also closed some South Korean businesses in its territorybecause of their support for actions that have raised tensions.

You don't like Trump's style, but it is working.

^ In what way has "Trump's style" been working with North Korea?

Things seems to be getting worse with every tweet is how it looks to me.

You don't like Trump's style, but it is working.

Even Klingons and Romulans knew more about diplomacy than Trump. His 'style' is bullying and threats. That is not the way to garner respect.

And it's not working. He is winning only in the minds of his supporters. If he was a football coach, he would have been fired months ago.

We have tried your kind of diplomacy with NoKo for about 67 years allowing this situation to developed. Trump's style has convinced China to begin pressuring NK, which we have not been able to do before.

I am not sure if pressuring or provoking is the right word. Whichever, I just hope it works before the nuclear bombs start exploding. Don't you?

Of course, but even so, if we allow it to fester, NK will have more and better bombs and missles in the future. Think of Neville Chamberlain announcing "peace for our time".

Trump is determined to encourage hostilities, and he's only too happy to blab it over Twitter.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump says Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is "wasting his time" trying to negotiate with North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs, raising speculation about whether Trump could be undermining efforts to maintain channels of communication or somehow bolstering the diplomat's hand in possible future talks.

It was not immediately clear what prompted Trump's tweets, among a series of weekend posts that ranged from hurricane recovery efforts in Puerto Rico to NFL players' allegiance to the national anthem, and at whom they were aimed: Tillerson, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, those pushing for continued diplomacy, those favouring a military response to repeated provocations.

I suggest Trump is more cunning than you want to think. Experience suggests that when we try to negotiate with third world countries, they regard our desire to negotiate as being a sign of weakness--increasing their bargaining power but making agreement much harder. So, while Tillerson negotiates, Trump brushes it aside as a waste of time, negating the increased bargaining power they might think they have. Trump does have experience negotiating deals.

I really hope that you are right and that what Trump and Tillerson are doing is all a well thought out plan. But given the evidence of how Trump appears to shoot off his mouth without thinking, it is difficult for me to believe there is any actual strategy behind it. But again, I hope I am wrong and you are right. I do not want to be proven right by a hydrogen bomb landing in U.S. territory.

Trump doesn't know how to negotiate anything. Even now, with the Free Trade talks going on between Mexico, the US, and Canada, Trump has been doing nothing but bullying and threatening his way through them. And that's what he's doing with North Korea... bullying and threatening. The problem with that is that Kim Jong-un is just as good at bullying and threatening. There are two egomaniacs trying to out-bully and out-threaten each other, and neither is likely to back down.

To borrow a phrase from Teal'c, things will not calm down. They will, in fact, "calm up".

According to this ABC news documentary,
China has no power or any control on North Korea. China is powerless ...

China has already enforced UN sanctions on North Korea by restricting supplies of fuel for missiles. and fuel for vehicles.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...textiles-pyongyang-donald-trump-a7962611.html

I quote:
China’s Commerce Ministry announced on Saturday that exports of refined petroleum to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) will be restricted to 2 million barrels per annum, which comes into effect on 1 October.Joseph Cheng of the Chinese University of Hong Kong told Al Jazeera that “China wants to demonstrate its support of the world community's position dissuade North Korea from continuing to hold nuclear tests and long-range missile tests”.

China is responding positively to UN resolutions imposing sanctions on North Korea, by imposing restrictions on its trading relations with North Korea. In response I note that matters related to North Korea have become rather quiet over the past week. It is also recognised that if Kim becomes too belligerent he might well be on the receiving end of a bullet, thanks to the intervention of the Chinese leadership tired of their neighbour's destabilising behaviour.

What has this to do with Trump?

For one thing, Trump has made it clear that we are prepared to us massive force. China has forces on the border and probably does not want to be drawn into a war with the US. Trump has also talked about sanctions against China.
