What was the last play that you watched?

I forgot to post a month ago. I saw Dirty Dancing. It does not work as a play at all.

I saw the touring production this past Saturday of "Dirty Dancing" and I really enjoyed it. I read the reviews which said it is not a musical but a play with music. It was amazing how they recreated some of the scenes from the movie. The sets of rain falling in the background, the swimming pool, etc. The two star lead actors who played the Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey roles were very good as well. The dancing was great too. The play also included some songs that were not in the movie because they could not get the rights for them for the movie. The songs were "Save the Last dance for me" by the Drifters and "Stubborn kind of fellow" by Marvin Gaye.

If musicals count, then the last two I saw were Grey Gardens and Evil Dead: the Musical.

Grey Gardens was a great production, but I've never totally been sold on the musical itself. I've always loved the story and been a huge fan of the documentary (still haven't seen the HBO movie sadly. :( ), but I'm just not sure it's a story that needs to be told through a musical. I think the hardest part was that the first act was a flashback and the second act was modern times (well, the '70s...), so they have all these supporting cast members from the first act just randomly popping into the second act like ghosts (but not really specific ghosts of anybody, just a random ensemble to help beef up a song) which, to be blunt, was just really annoying.

For Evil Dead: the Musical, I had the joys of not only sitting in the splatter zone, but RIGHT in the first row! I even got the very, very first blood of the evening! It was fun because since it's such a cult hit, it really opened up the theatre to another audience... in other words, it kind of felt like a tattoo parlor. Hahaha, the best part is I went with my boss, so I think he was a little shocked by all the liberty spikes and mohawks around us. Hahaha.

Last Saturday I saw the Neil Simon Play "Same Time, Next Year." The play was great! It was funny!

Last night I saw the National touring production of "Beautiful:The Carole King Musical." The show was great! It was funny, and very touching in moments. Also, the incredible music catalog of Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Also Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann who were also music songwriters and friends of Carole and Gerry were also featured in the Musical.

I will be seeing that when it comes to Portland. I have no idea who Carole King is though.

My friend took her children and me to a kids version of The Little Mermaid. It was great.

Hairspray - In Concert (Baltimore Symphony Orchestra) with John Waters as the'narrator' (an addition to this production) and George Wendt as 'Wilbur' - it was pretty much the entire show: costumes, choreography, just minus the scenery but some key props retained for dramatic effect - wow! this was so fun!!

just saw the touring production of "The Phantom of the Opera" at the Kennedy Center - was very impressed even though both the Phantom and Christine were performed by their understudies.

I saw that when it was in Portland. I liked it much more the second time.

I forgot to post in May or June.

I saw Motown: The Musical. It was pretty good. I knew more music than I thought I would. A couple of the actors were standouts. The kid that played Michael Jackson was really good. So was the guy that played Marvin Gaye.

Just got back from Lion King. It was good, but they added some stuff I thought they could have did without. I still recommend it to everyone though.

Last Saturday I saw Neil Simon's Broadway Bound. It was part of a trilogy of plays by Neil Simon. The play is semi-autobiographical, the first play was Brighton Beach Memoirs, the second play was Biloxi Blues, and this play was the third and last of the trilogy.
The play was good but the story is a bit sad. All three plays were made into movies as well and they are probably available on DVD for anyone wanting to check them out.

I saw this musical awhile ago and thought it was great! It is a jukebox musical like jersey boys or Beautiful: The Carole King Story.

I think it was Chicago years ago on television. The places that host the Broadway plays charge too much. I voted for funding of the DIA but I don't think I'll waste my tax money again. They can have a garage sale if they're really hurting like everyone else does.

Just got in from Beautiful: The Carole King Story. Very good. Some of the best use of humor I have seen.

"Six Degrees of Separation" today (at the Keegan Theatre) - actor Matthew Sparacino is my new favourite DC actor :=D: :luv2:

yesterday: "The Secret Garden" (the musical) (Shakespeare Theatre Company production)
