Tomorrow night I am going to see "Cabaret" at a small theater that seats about a hundred people. There are only four or five rows of seats so you don't sit too far back and the first row is on the floor that is used as a stage, so at times you could possibly reach out and touch an actor without standing up. All of the performances are sold out so they are adding a Sunday performance and expect it to sell out too. The theater is on the second floor of a converted factory that has a slew of artists studios in it. I know of only one exit and there is a long twisting and turning hallway between the stairwell and the theater. After the fire in Oakland for the rave that was in an artsy building I was apprehensive about this theater. If the lights went out I don't think that I would be able to find the stairway, but I emailed them and they said that there are sprinklers and fire extinguishers and the fire department inspects them regularly and that there is a second fire exit closer that I haven't noticed. They also said that there are emergency lights that come on when the power goes out. I was impressed with their timely response. They had also sent an email to people who had reservations on Saturday to tell them that the artists were having a special sale all day and the parking lot may fill up but that they had arranged for additional lots to be opened to handle the overflow and that we could come early and shop before the play. I'm looking forward to this.
