This is a sad tale. Marcus Fakana was jailed in Dubai for 12 months for having sex with an under-age girl. He served about half of his sentence before receiving a royal pardon and being returned to the UK in July.

His solicitor has said that Fakana's experiences in Dubai "gave him a renewed focus on Christianity and prayer". Despite that, he was killed in a car crash yesterday whilst being chased by the police. The driver has been charged with "causing death by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and failing to stop". An act of God presumably.

It was the girl's mother who informed on him to the Dubai police. She must have known what would happen.
That aside, very sad his 'friend' was stupid enough to drive dangerously

Richmond Council U-turn on £150 fine for coffee poured in drain

Burcu Yesilyurt, who poured coffee down a drain in Richmond, welcomed the cancellation of the "disproportionate" fine.

Ms Yesilyurt said she had asked the enforcements officers if there were any signs or information warning people of the law but received no response ... when she asked the officers what she was supposed to have done with the remaining coffee, she was told to pour it in a nearby bin.

My guess is that the enforcement officers themselves never dreamed it was illegal to pour liquid into the storm drains until the council sent them on a course where they learned about all the things that nobody dreamed were illegal but which they could be fined for doing. They could instead have "NO LIQUIDS" stencilled on the kerbstones next to the drains so that everyone would know what not to do, but that wouldn't make money. The council isn't in bad shape financially. The local paper says "The council's total debt is 93.2% of its core spending power, significantly lower than similar authorities (249.6%) and the national average (226.7%)".

Richmond is nice. There is a lovely riverside pub called The White Cross which has a tendency to get flooded at high tide. I've been in there when it flooded and it wasn't as much fun as it looks in the video. All sorts of waste including used tampons and bits of clothing were sloshing around. I don't think a few drops of coffee would gave made much difference.

The Metropolitan Police are appealing for him to hand himself in, which means they haven't a clue where he is. Heads will surely roll, preferably starting with the Justice Secretary himself.

Also yesterday, another illegal immigrant (aka asylum seeker) was convicted of murdering a 27-year old single mother by stabbing her 23 times with a screwdriver. He will be formally sentenced in December, although life imprisonment is the mandatory penalty for murder. Hopefully the prison service can keep hold of this one.

A delivery driver who was present when Kebatu was released told Sky News that he had re-entered the prison four or five times before staff directed him to the train station. “It wasn’t a case of: he’s released and he’s disappeared and run off,” said the driver, who gave his name only as Sim. “He was standing around the prison, trying to work out where he needed to go, for maybe an hour and a half – maybe a little bit longer – before I overheard one of the officers saying: ‘Right, this is how you get to the station.’ ... I’m not sticking up for the guy at all… [but] in my eyes, he wanted to do the right thing and go to the right place. He knew he was getting deported but he didn’t know where he was going or how he was going to get there.”

A rejected asylum seeker with a string of convictions across Europe has been convicted of murder after stabbing a man in Derby. I guess life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years is one way of avoiding deportation.
