The judge overruled Ms. Davis' attorney's motion to set aside the law and determine that she, alone, had to sign and issue. The judge refused and by his sending Ms. Davis and her son to jail, provides that licenses will now be issued.

This whole scam is a way for these sleezebags to make money. They've seen the pizza couple get rich on "GoFundMe campaigns" and think that between those efforts and a FOX news contributorship, they'll be rich like Sarah Palin. If I were the judge, I would have ordered a constitutional law class and religious education class for Ms. Davis to be completed before she could be released from jail. Perhaps she would be bright enough to realize there is a separation of church and state for a reason -- so that nuts like her can't overrule constitutional laws and court edicts. Then again, I am sure the Heritage Law group that is defending her is sending email requests for funds out at the pace of breeding rabbits.

What FPNY said. In these smaller towns and counties, especially if there's a lot of old money types, nepotism and other corruption is allowed to run rampant, unabated. Hell, in the town I grew up in, the city manager's adult son and the son's wife were both known drug dealers. Everybody knew it, and also knew where they lived. No one did anything about it, because he's the city manager's son. Favoritism, nepotism and other corruption runs often unchecked for years, if not decades, and sometimes never, to where you get a situation that gives off this "family business" appearance.

Answering ClevelandTodd's point - While what I'm about to say gets into temporal physics, and is a "what if" scenario that now will never play out because history has been irrevocably altered to where this scenario will now never happen, had this whole thing about same-sex marriage and the SCOTUS ruling - had this whole thing never have happened, and had Rowan County, KY never made the news over this whole stink, just like you had Kim Davis eventually get elected to and take over the position of County Clerk, when her mom left office, it is highly likely that her son would have gotten elected and would have taken over as the new County Clerk once Kim Davis either retired or step down - again, giving the "family business" appearance. It's how old money works, especially in these more rural towns and counties where open nepotism and favoritism goes unchecked and unanswered.

The judge is to be applauded for his ruthlessness in exacting jail as punishment. Martyr or no, she deserves no more leniency than any petulant teenager backtalking a ruling judge. Let her rot.

To Vidarr's question, media blackouts are not lightly issued by the bench, nor should they be. There won't be a Rodney King riot. The matters of the Court were not revealing covert security operations or state secrets, and the litigants were not dealing with private matters that would unnecessarily expose individuals to public scrutiny like the names of minor victims of rape or incest. Even then, a blackout shouldn't be issued to further a political end, to stifle information that would rally a political cause.

Let the Right Wing sympathies carry her aloft. Let the GOP have to beat down the rabid Fundamentalists to keep her off the dais in the convention. It's not enough that they are too stupid to heal the breach with Latinos. Now, they can go in circles while alienating the fiscal (read "moderate") Republicans if they kowtow to Huckabee's faction at the convention. I can hardly wait.

And it's great to see such warm attentions from the likes of Lamdaboy and a few others who wish American democracy and jurisprudence well. What a powerful story it is when the hearing of it turns such hearts of stone.

The one saving grace to the entire fiasco is there is no potential for appeal to the US Supreme Court, the matter already having been ruled upon. It'll melt off the front page as soon as the next celebrity divorce distracts the sheeple.
