... by that meaning "why Europe sometime came to pass as officially LGTBIXCEGBJYMM+-friendly, and America will never get even that", one supposes.

That thought also crossed my mind.

Should that be Western Europe? Countries like Poland aren't a whole lot of laughs.

Apart the fact that so many people doubt that anything beyond the Oder-Neisse, let alone Russia, (as well as above the Shetland) can be properly called "Europe", please care to read better the OP: it assumes that you do not need to enter Slavic Bear territory to experience "gay-unfriendly Europe".

That thought also crossed my mind.

Same as above.

If you want, we can derail to start discussing about the limits of Europe, and why Turkey is just about as European as The Russias, Hungary or Poland.

The title of the book though is misleading...the whole eastern portion of Europe, including part of Turkey, Russia, Hungary, Poland and some of the other Balkans is about as unfriendly as it gets for LGBTQ+ people without just throwing them all in jail.

As for 'america', last time I checked in both north (canada) and central and south america there are a number of countries as friendly for homos as western Europe.

I think the author was just sloppy and you can try to argue this for the sake of arguing as you always do in order to fill your day...or you can accept that we will just agree to disagree.

By "America" does she mean the US or the Americas as a whole? Cuz last I checked, a lot of Latin American countries aren't exactly gay friendly, lmao.

Following the sloppiness mentioned by rare, I think for her the Americas do not even exist as a part of The Civilized World

Again, there are parts of Spicland, Frogland, The Imperial Jack, Nordicland, let alone Pastaland as a whole, as far as "general disposition" is concerned, are as ragingly LGTBIQ+XCMNROV as can be... like when China starts about how "democratic" The Holy West can be or cease to be on occasion...

As sloppy and sensationalist has the author may have intended to be, she must have been referring more to something like the open blatantness of it: while, say, in Spain, raging anti-homo politicians just cower and point out the Iranian regime or something like that when it comes to homosexuality, in America there are two very vocal factions trying to hold their heads above each other, one of them merely being the sort of incumbent majority.

^ But, happily, they are Christian, blond-ish white, and that backyard helped make Merkel great.

Vodka...

I didn't know that the US and Canada weren't gay friendly. I live in a ostentatiously gay friendly town--Los Angeles--and my partner and I have traveled all over the country--including small towns in the Deep South--and have always felt welcome. Moscow and Saint Petersburg were welcoming also.

How openly/obviously gay are you?

Were you obviously just passing through as potential customers/tourists? You know-- 'Spend your cash, but then, move along.'

Can you be sure that you didn't pay them to be welcoming?

Cosign, tolerating your capital is just passive aggressive bigotry.

That is what I don't understand. Canada is incredibly LGBTQ friendly.

^ What I do not understand is how come Canada, even by the Canadian themselves, can come to be identified with "[The United States of] America".

... particularly considering all the mutual "hate"/"distrust", interest in segregating one from each other.

Canada is very LGBT friendly. You see rainbow flags and gay parades everywhere and anywhere
