Ok from my experience on forums a lot of people don't seem to understand that when sombody asks a question like this we want you to EXPLAIN why....if you just write NYC or LA you might as well not answer...I'm looking for reasons here.

I have never been to either NYC or LA but I've spent a lot of time reading about them and looking at pictures because I have an obsession with big cities.
A big city is the only type of place I would like to live in....but I don't like just buildings I like seeing beautiful nature too...and I just love having everything close to me and being able to see a lot of different people everyday.
I like big cities with gayborhoods....NYC has the biggest gay population in America, LA is second. That is a huge plus in my life....living in a gayborhood.
Just going to a gay majority gym or going out in the street and seeing so many hot guys who are probabbly gay and having gay friends and lots of gay places....big plus in life.

I am 99.9% sure I would rather live in Los Angeles. First of all I hate winter....it makes me sad in the soul. I am sure if I lived in Los Angeles for 20 years and it never snowed...I would enjoy a day or two visiting a place where it snows a lot.
But winter day after day...I just hate it.
I used to like winter when I was a kid...but now I just find it to be a cruel and inhumane time of the year.
In California if you want to experience some winter you just drive up to the mountains and then go back to your home with heavenly weather.
I love summer...not when it gets too hot and humid just regular warm beautiful summer days.
Although I definitley do pick humid days over cold winter days.
That I would say is the main reason I am picking LA over NYC.

Another reason is Los Angeles looks more beautiful...not just the sunny days and palm trees, but also the landscape. In New York everything is flat...with a few hills if they can even be called hills.
Areas close to Los Angeles also have lots of hills and big mountains...I love mountains and hilly areas....not a fan of a flat landscape.
Also in NYC everything looks so close together...LA has more freedom and space...and of course the beautiful weather lets you enjoy the outdoors more.

I am scared of earthquakes though...but LA is not Haiti the buildings are built to withstand earthquakes so that does bring me comfort.

Even if I lived in the States, I wouldn't live in either of them.

Maybe that's a plus for me since I hated having to walk and wait for the subway...and then usually walk again or take a bus.
I prefer driving. I love driving in general.
I was so happy when I got my license.
Boston has traffic too....it's not a big deal unless LA is much worse.

I agree with Neil Simon, who, after living in both, said this:

When it's 20 degrees in New York, it's 70 in LA.

When it's 100 degrees in New York, it's 70 in LA.

There are a million interesting people in New York--and 70 in LA.

I have lived in both cities. I love each one. They are both great cities. But Los Angeles is my home. So for that reason I vote for los angeles.

I'd rather live in rush limbaughs crotch than live in NYC. I got stuck on the GW bridge once for three hours.

I wanted to jump.

LA is spread out and the people are silly, but at least you have room to breathe.

I would prefer a third option..... BOSTON... and I am a firm believer that if you dont think your home town is the best place to be you are lazy and need to get up off it and move to somewhere better.

Also, second the part about driving. Everything seems to be two hours from everything else in SoCal.

My parents lived in Riverside until my dad died; my mom still lives there. When they visited me they were all worried when it turned out that the place I wanted to take them for lunch had closed (annoyed that I didn't call ahead and so on).

Of course, we just walked down the block and found another place, where they had an excellent meal that they both loved. It's just that easy in NYC.

In SoCal, you'd be hungry for another two hours if that happened.

I am considering moving to Boston when I am finished with college, BostonPirate! There is so much to see there. And Boston is REALLY a "walk-to-where-you-have-to-go" city, and The Institute of Contemporary Art is a labor of love.

3t universities and a great subway, but we call it the "T". Bostonians shorten everything... we live in MASS, we drive on Mass Ave. The only thing that bothers people about us really is that we close up town early... restaurants at 10 bars at 2. even the T stops running mostly past one AM and picks back up at 4 to 5.

bit it is a walking city if you are on one of the lines, and they all connect so its cool. when you come in town we can meet for coffee and I will show you around.

Just going by what I read in the news, but isn't Los Angeles (and much of California) in a catastrophic state of near economic, social, and environmental collapse? If it's warm weather and a gayborhood you're seeking, there must be some other options?

Even if I lived in the States, I wouldn't live in either of them.

I do live in the states, and I still wouldn't live in either of them.

While I have spent time, and enjoyed myself, in both places, neither one would be a choice to live in for me.

New York is, by any standard, one of the world's greatest cities. It is a center of business, fashion, education, culture, theatre, and gay culture. Anything and everything that you can possibly imagine can be found there.

Los Angeles is also a world-class city. It is the center of style, culture, education, business, West Coast influence, and the entertainment industry. Again, everything that you could possibly imagine wanting can be found there.

But I am simply NOT a big-city type of guy. I don't care for crowds of mass humanity like they get in Times Square each and every day. I don't like the frenzied pace of life in New York. I love the opportunities that the city has to offer, but I also like to know that I am eventually returning the the things that I know and am familiar with. I don't like the gridlock traffic in Los Angeles. Los Angeles, to me, is all about images. I don't fit that "perfection" image, I never did. I am not movie-star handsome by any stretch of the imagination. I would probably be the anti-Southern Californian with my own choices and lifestyle.

Neither city has ideal weather. New York is blistering hot in the summer, and can get nasty Noreaster storms. Los Angeles can be just as bad with those Santa Ana winds, earthquakes, and wildfires because it gets so dry.

Where I live, we have four distinct seasons. It has it's share of beautiful and nasty days each season. The snow in winter can be horrendous, but when there's too much of it, we simply stay home, warm and safe. When it gets warm here, we have two months of hot, humid weather. That's what air conditioning was invented for. We have beautiful, sandy beaches like Los Angeles. We have a wealth of sophisticated shopping, dining, culture, education, and business opportunities. We have an active gay community here. I can drive anywhere in the area in under 20 minutes. We have plenty of expressways surrounding the city and there is never a true gridlock, even at the height of rush hours. The quality of life here is very high. We can drink the tap water, and it's really good and cold. If we get "big city fever" New York is only an hour away by Jet Blue's reasonable air fares, and Toronto is only 150 miles away (or across Lake Ontario).

I admire anyone who can live in either place. I won't criticize their choices. But neither city would be a good fit for me. :D

Boston is not my hometown.
My hometown is Sarajevo haha.
I don't like Boston.....flat landscape, not a lot of natural beauty, brutal winters...
Your defensive atittude about Boston is unattractive, most of the people here seem to have that village thing going on.
They take it personally if you say something negative against it.
It's an ok place though..I just hate a flat landscape.
As a city it's nice....for people who don't have a mountain and hill fetish like me.
Maybe it's because I grew up in Sarajevo? I miss the huge mountains and hills.....they make me so happy just seeing them.
I love the South End in Boston...mostly because of the gays.

i have no defensive attitude towards boston. I just love where I live. if its not for you, you ought to leave as soon as posible.

Boston is a cute little town. I enjoy visiting it.

It's good on the male flesh thing too. Cute Irish boys! Not to mention a very high density of college students.

Well I live in New York State, and everyone thinks there isn't more to New York but the city. If you drive just 30 minutes north of New York City, you can be in heaven - lots of mountains, trails, farms, fresh country air, etc. If you drive about an hour and a half north, you can be in the Catskills... That, too is beautiful. Really, a 3 hour ride north of NYC will make wonders... But since you like nature, you can also walk to Central Park. In the fall, it's gorgeous. The scenery... ah!

Now, about the snow... In NYC, if it snows, it's cleaned immediately. Mayor Bloomberg rarely to ever give the NYC Student snow days, so if you're worried about a messy commute, forget about it- but in the suburbs, it can be a problem. To add, not all of Winter is extremely cold... Personally, I think it's tolerable. But that's probably because I've lived there awhile and can handle it...

So me, I'd rather live in NYC.

Also -- LA may be one of the best gay towns, but it's also one with the highest crime rate- just something to consider. Well, there's crime in NYC too -- honestly, though, there's crime everywhere- no matter where you go.

But just think of the opportunities you can have in NYC! The weather isn't always the same [like in LA] and the drive to paradise is very short.

Are you honestly considering moving to either city? Or is this a game?

I will have to visit NYC and Central Park and the mountains of New York and also LA...and then I will be able to decide.
I think I will still pick LA though....I just feel nice having a home where winter never comes...I love traveling though...I want to go everywhere but when I come home I prefer to be living in a mediterranean climate.
West Hollywood is also super gay....perfect place for me.
:D
Yes I am considering a move but not now...this is after I finish college.

New York City.

I would die without snow.

I'm the opposite. I moved to Florida to get away from the snow and cold.

I can get used to the heat. I can never get used to the cold. The winters in a cold climate are dreary and depressing. We also get an extra hour of daylight in the winter since we are closer to the equator. In the Spring to Summer time they get an hour more daylight.

I grew up 15 miles from Manhattan. I would rather live in L.A because the climate in milder.

Nah...I'm going to take my time because I am young and in college so leaving as soon as possible would be the worst thing I could do.

Los Angeles.

I always found New Yorkers to be rude, bitter and obnoxious, the streets are filthy and the land is flat. I love New York. When I'm in the mood for a crazy party. For about 3 days. Kinda like Vegas with bad weather.

In LA, I can climb a mountain, go surfing, go scuba diving, ride my motorcycle through the mountain canyons, ride through the desert, the forest, the countryside, ride my mountain bike from the beach up into the mountains... and I can still be home for dinner.

And I can do it in January.

I can go snowboarding before lunch, then drive down the mountain to Palm Springs and lay by the pool in a speedo.

In January.

If you think that people in Los Angeles are all shallow and without soul, you watch too many episodes of The Hills or you only hang out on Sunset Blvd between Holloway and Doheney. Most of the people I meet here are fun, friendly, laid back and love to stay active and away from the tacky tourist places with the people who all try to look like reality show "stars."
