  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Would you rather live in New York City or Los Angeles? Why?

California's a funny state... 5 miles outside of any city and you may as well be in Mississippi.

I actually kind of like that about California. You have you large concentrated groups of people, but you also have places nice and wide open with not many people around to go out to.

I'm born and raised in New York City and have passed through L.A. enough times to know I would never , ever, ever want to live there..

Too each there own.I guess if I grew up in L.A. I might feel different.Personally,I thought the place was over rated..

I got there and was expecting something nice.I wasn't impressed. There is endless sprawl and there doesn't seem to be any alternative to sitting in mind numbing traffic jams in every direction..

The people looked pissed off, sitting alone for hours in their cars. The fabled mountains are encased in a thick layer of smog for several months a year and sometimes are barely visible because of it.I'm sure there are some cool people, but for me, there just seems to be too many ,flakey, spun, stuck on themselves people there..

New York is near and familiar to me.So I guess I'm more partial to that if I have to choose one or the other. There is more to do,it has more history,it looks cooler. It's so much easier to get around in.It's ideally suited for the pedestrian. There is a great 24 hour mass transit that will get you to within a few blocks of any point in the city or the surrounding boroughs. In other words, you don't need to drive. As a matter of fact, many people shun car ownership. It's more of a hassle than it's worth.I didn't learn to drive a car until I was 21 years old and, that was only when I went out west to Arizona..

There are people from all over the world in NYC .Some are cool, some are dirtbags.I've found though, that most people are respectful and try to mind their own business, but are helpful if asked. What some people mistake as rudeness is just a N.Y. thing.People are more foward than in other places.People are busy or are in a rush and don't like people wasting a lot of their time.If you have something to say, spit it out..

Sure the weather is not all that.Brutal winters with winds that can cut diamonds, humid summers that make your balls feel like they've been dipped in fondue. But you get used to it..I guess..lol

It sounds like you have your mind made up for L.A..Not being from either place, you may like it out there.Just depends what you're looking for.If you want warm weather, then L.A it is...

Good luck whatever you decide.

If that don't work, you can do like I did and move to Pennsylvania. You'll be up to your ass in mountains and nature. When you get sick of bears shitting in your yard, you're just two hours from N.Y.C..

@Ronboy

I agree. Upstate New York is about the third- or fourth-most underrated place in the States. Beauty you can eat with a spoon (especially in the fall), and just the right length growing season. Not to mention, it's not far to the city—THE city.

(An aside to you, Ronboy: what does the antique New York apple called "Baldwin" taste like?)

There're about three places in I want to live—even if it's just for a brief time—before I die. They are: Duluth, Minnesota; Fairbanks, AK; and upstate New York—either in Albany or Elmira....

By the way, folks: what's with all you wusses regarding cold weather? All you have to do is put on more clothes! When you're boiling outside in 100+ weather, you can only take off so many layers.

I have never been to upstate New York...I'm sure it's nice in the summer though if it has hills and mountains.
I'm not a big fan of autumn though and the colorful leaves...I think it's nice for like a desktop picture. Actually that's one of the worst memories of my life, when my parents made me rake the wet leaves in our really big back yard...
That's the point about winter...you HAVE to have so many clothes all the time.
It's just annoying....the hot summers might be a little uncomfortable when it gets too humid....but for the most part I love summer. Love love love.
The idea of being able to walk around naked is just beautiful...on the contrary the idea of having to wear so many clothes to protect yourself from the climate is unattractive.
I always think of whatever winter is not so bad then it comes and I promise myself I'll move away to a winter free place.
This reminds me of a funny song I heard but it's not in English.

I have shortened my skirt in half
my booty is naked and it hurts like hell
the minus has dominated my pussy
my pubic hairs have become an urchin

Fuck winter and the pretty snowflakes
I'd much rather boil in the summer heat
winter pussy is useless and depressing
summer pussy is alive and happy

Hell Yeah, Puerto Ricans are much hotter than Mexicans. ..|(!)*|*:sex:

Well, I wouldn't go that far. I'd call it a tie. I like Mexican dudes a whole lot too! :p

Living down here in the Lone Star State, though, I've made many Mexican friends. I want some, ahem, Puerto Rican friends too. :p (The P.R. guys that I know here are hetero. :( )

NEITHER!!!!! Both cities have ZERO class. Chicago is where it's at.

NYC is very dirty, rude people, and you feel you can't breathe.

LA has a lot of assholes, fake people, BAD traffic, and you feel you can't breathe.

Chicago has midwestern-polite people, the best public transportation, and clean Lake Michigan air...well for a city.

Ugh. Freezing cold, high crime rate, Oprah lives there.

No thanks.

You could not pay me to live in Chicago. It's a fly over city, why would I want to live there? I'd feel like I was in the boonies.

Once you see Manhattan, nothing else is a city.

Well, there are parts of LA and NYC that will make you feel in the Boonie's as well, yes?

Not in Manhattan, even Central Park is just a park and you know you are in the city.

I've never seen a house in Manhattan. They have town homes (brownstones), but they are attached. Another odd thing about Manhattan is that you seldom see a gas station.

Some Hispanic guys are really hideous and some are just beautiful and adorable like Ricky Martin or Mario Lopez.

I will tell you that I like to visit New York in the Spring and the FAll... not too hot or cold and I stay for a few days and party and have fun.

But I start to long for the beaches and mountains and the canyons. I love walking around my neighbourhood... all the steep hills and hidden canyons and palm trees, flowers, vines and wild parrots flying around. I love the cafe organico down the street where I grab a coffee and do a little reading and talk with the people there. Silverlake is a beautiful little community and there are a LOT of beautiful little communities around here.

What the hell is the difference between NYC and Chicago....looks the same.

Also don't say the atittude of people...that's just crap.
Every city has evil bastards and angels.
It's all in your head.

Mountains and beaches are less than an hour from Manhattan. Rockaway Beach is in Queens, Staten Island has beaches too. The Jersey shore starts only a little 60 miles from Manhattan.

If you haven't seen the Tappan Zee bridge it has some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever see.

This is kind of an unintentionally hilarious way to slam NY, since most NYers would probably agree with wanting to jump if stuck on the GWB that long. I mean who wants to drive a car, anyway? Gross!

(though I will say it's incredible to bike)

I hate that fucking bridge..I must have spent a thousand hours inching my way across it in a semi..

Here's a quick video I made one day.It took over three hours to get from 5 miles before the tolls booths to the bridge itself. It was a fucking nightmare.

Another great thing about NYC is that it is so close to so many other major cities. Boston and DC are about a 4 hour drive. Philly is a 90 minute ride. Atlantic City is a 2 hour drive.

Oh yeah, we are very close the Pocono's! Another great place full of mountains and whatnot! So if you don't exactly like the hustle and bustle of the city, you can move to a surrounding area and visit every now and again, like me! NewguyJ, are you in NY?

No I grew up in NJ (15 miles from NYC) and now live in south Florida and I love it here.

I can be on the Angeles crest in 17 minutes from my house. And I can ride my bike on the beach in January. Or into the desert or in the canyons.

And you haven't lived until you've seen the sun rise over Joshua Tree... it's breath taking.

I'm just a california boy. Never going to want to live in Manhattan.

I thought you were a Canadian boy. I spent a short time in Cali and I thought it was nice. I don't like the cold water in the beaches, but otherwise it's nice. I only spent 4 hours there, one day I hope to see San Diego and San Francisco.
