  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Would you rather live in New York City or Los Angeles? Why?

I don't think you read my post thoroughly. I said it's interesting that people favoring Los Angeles keeping talking about the mountains, and forests, lakes, and attractive nearby towns OUTSIDE Los Angeles, while the people speaking up for New York City are talking about the neighborhoods, amenities, transportation, culture, etc. INSIDE New York City.

It seems to me that people who love Los Angeles love it because of what it's near, not what it is. But people who love New York, love it becuase of what is is.

Well that's because usually people that love L.A. are also nature lovers.
Or they just prefer a warmer climate...
Why do I like Sarajevo more than Boston? Boston has a "higher quality of life", clean, has better opportunities in everything...but I love Sarajevo because the feel is different there. The huge mountains and hilly landscape...I love it.
It's amazing just being there and being able to see it everyday.
I just feel happy in a place like that...even though there are bombed out buildings, poverty everywhere, aggresive gypsies asking for money...nationalistic homophobic religious people.

Car maintenance annoys me.
Pollution annoys me.
Traffic annoys me.
Status symbols annoy me.
Searching for parking annoys me.

Renting a car now and then to take a long drive somewhere may one day be appealing to me, but driving every single day is something I have zero desire to do.

Since moving here, I never have to worry about finding a designated driver when I'm out, I go through a ton more books, and I see ridiculous stuff (acrobatics, magic shows, great music, and all-around foolery) on the trains. I love having a great transit system. Don't miss my car at all.

I've been all about NY in this thread, but like I said earlier. Please go to L.A. You strike me as the kind that belongs there.

That's suspicious...I think you are a psychic and you want me to die in an earthquake you see happening there soon.....

New York City Anyday.

I do like hot tropical weather, but the culture in NYC is just too much to pass up.

I just cannot imagine living in that. Certainly it works for some people, but for me... yuck.

Look at it at night, when the whole city is glittering like a spilled bag of jewels, and its allure will be apparent.

Crissy,

I vaguely remembered something sort of, but preferred giving you the

credit for sure. The fact that you put it out there and what I had to say

still stand......like old Steve is 80 plus if he is even still around and probably

wouldn't even notice if you borrowed a bit.

/\ Plus the fact that barely anyone lives in Downtown Manhattan despite all the realtors beckoning people to buy condos there.

All of New York isn't congested and crowded. I know some people are better off visiting New York rather than living there but I see some misconceptions popping up about New York.

People who love nature can live in NYC too. Most forget about the other 4 boroughs when they think of New York. They immediately think of Manhattan, most likely Midtown and Wall Street. Also, unfortunately they don't even know about the nature preserves either. You would never know you're in NYC in these areas:

Staten Island, (it's practically suburban New Jersey), Forest Hills Queens, and an area barely anyone knows about, Riverdale- in the Bronx. It's the Beverly Hills of NYC and it's in the Bronx.

$1 million dollar homes and elite private schools in the Bronx. Who knew?

Almost every city has areas like these. There's more than Manhattan. The hustle, bustle and vibrant street life of Manhattan is what draws so many people but there are sides of New York people don't see because that is not what's presented to them. Just something to think about.;)

Yes, that's true, I would choose Los Angeles because of what it's near, not the city itself. But also because of the climate and the hot guys. The city itself is not that interesting to me, though there are some fun parts of it. I can't see living in New York, it seems to confining and too unhealthy.

Now that's what I'm talking about. California is a state full of natural beauty with a climate matched by only about 7 or 8 other places on earth, but if you took the city of Los Angeles itself and put it somewehere else, say in Michigan; it would not be the cultural center of anything but, perhaps, Michigan.

But if you took New York City and placed it in Michigan, it would still be the economic and cultural center of the United States, if not the Universe.

And that says something about the two cities relative to one another.

I will have to choose LA:

1. the weather
2. real estate tends to be cheaper than ny
3. my family and most of my friends are here
4. i can be close to nature while still being not too far from seeing a variety of places

cons:

1.traffic. but I work from home so I very rarely have to deal with it.
2 pollution. could be better but it has gotten better over the years
3. expensive to live and do business

And as for the sterotypes in regards to LA, I have not found that to be the case....at least with the people that are my friends. We all choose who our friends are in life....there are millions of people in LA and they do not all think or behave the same. I live in the burbs....not in weho. You will find more stereotypes on the West side of LA.

Oh cut it out.

Los Angeles is not that culture deprived. It has the entertainment industry. And perhaps our culture may be a bit "plastic" and not the romanticized hundred year old culture you have in mind but it is modern culture.

As a matter of fact, it is quite easy to argue Los Angeles is the most powerful cultural force in the world. Who brought you Jaws? Who brought you Katy Perry? Where does Lindsay Lohan go to rehab?

Los Angeles may not have much of a unique culture of its own like NY but it dictates the culture of an entire continent. How foreigners perceive NYC is arguably more influenced by Los Angeles than NYC itself.

@bw
While the Huntington Library has some of the most elaborate and beautiful gardens that they could never match in NY (because of their climate), the Getty Center is in LA and easily the most recognized museum in the United States.

Trust me people.....

California is a great place to e a tourist,

But, two weeks is enough. Then it is time to go.

California after two weeks begins to grow on you

like a cyst or cancer. No one in their right mind would

ever choose to live here. It is an addiction and Los Angeles

is just a point of entry for infection. San Francisco, Tahoe,

Monterey, San Diego et cetera are just hollywood stage sets.

excuse me....that is a bit rude and I have no idea where that comes from. I choose to live here and I think that I have a pretty good life here.

I enjoy living here. I love my neighbors....could not have asked for better ones. I have wonderful friends. I love that there are so many things to do all of the time. I love the diversity of the population. I love that I can easily go to an independent theater. I love that I can experience so many different cultures. I love that I live close to nature, next to a national forest, river, and creek.

I have friends that have homes in a couple other countries (a villa in the south of france, a condo on the Mediterranean in France, a home in Belgium, a place in India), and they travel all over the world. They were not originally from California, but whenever they come back to their beach home in LA, they always say that it is the best place to be in the World.

I think that LA and surrounding areas have just about something for everyone. There are not many places in the World where you can go to the beach in the day and go sking at night.

Metta,

I doubt you can trace your Californication back as far as I can. One of my
relatives was the original occupant of the Casa De Sobranes in Monterey for example.

The post was for the benefit of our people and to discourage others from coming here.

Comprende Senor? lol.lol

Well, not me. And I'd be more likely to enjoy the snow during the day and the beach at night.

The radiation hazard in LA is a big problem. Do you know that all dogs in SoCal get cataracts? It's because the ultraviolet light is so intense. It's not good for humans either. I was in La Jolla for my brother's wedding, and while it wasn't hot (we were at the beach) I could feel the ultraviolet destroying my skin. Actually it felt like my bones were being destroyed, but I'm pretty sure that was my imagination.

Shorter: not everyone thinks intense sunlight is a plus. I have pale skin and light-colored eyes. All that bright sunlight hurts and burns.
