Yes! Boring Soccer Gone For Four Years!

i used to thibk it's boring too but if you think about it you actually watch a lot of hot sweaty young athletic str8 guys running being angry trying to win... that's a turn on for me, plus most of them are very cute, Ben Feilhaber or Ronaldo to name some... When others are screaming for the goal they won i scream because the guy who won the goal usually takes out his t shirt and i can see his abs or hugs other players...
think positive its fun...

but to claim that it lacks athleticism is kind of a ridiculous claim to make, especially if you've never actually participated in the sport. One could argue that soccer lacks the physical strength or impeccable memory (albeit not for all positions) required in American football.

I'll admit I've never played this one, and it's one of the few sports I genuinely have zero idea of the rules and regulations and ins and outs of it, but it does seem to take about 4 hours for a 1(?) hour game and that makes me think that resting for 3/4 of the time requires a fairly low level of athleticism and/or fitness.

Additionally, given that amount of rest time who needs memory? You could be coached quite easily on all you need to know for the next 30 seconds of game time in all that frequent downtime...

What is the most popular sport in the world?

Football (American soccer) ...[/url]

BORING SPORT??? HAHAHAHAHAHA

Yeah, popularity is the only arbiter of quality. That's why we should all like American Idol, Survivor, Friends, and McDonalds. Also we should never listen to music that isn't in the Top 40, or try anything new, ever. It's not popular, so how can it be any good?

Are you doing a deliberate parody of a pig-ignorant person discussing a sport he's not interested in? Because if so you're dead on! (I'm not being sarcastic. I've heard people say things almost that dumb about European futbol.)

I HAVE played American football (at a very low level, and I hated it). It's stop-and-go, to be sure, but the GOs are very intense and highly coordinated and require tremendous precision and practice. A passer, for example, often has to hit a moving target from 50 yards away (or more), while 7 tons of pot roast are trying to crush him to death.

One time I saw a receiver, running full out, jump into the air in a pirouette, catch the ball while facing backward, finish his turn while descending, and keep running without missing a step. If you don't call that athleticism I'll ask for your definition, which I expect will be new to me.

Oh fer fuck's sake.

If you don't like it, don't watch it.

A bunch of gorgeous, sweaty men running around in bulging shorts ? Who needs it. ;)

Crikey Mate

This whole bloody thread has gone dogs bollocks.

You show me yours...I'll show you mine......Mines bigger than yours...t'isn't...

'tis too God S'trewth.... Fucking ludicrous...like a monkey fucking a futbol....

On a more cheerful note, it was 106F or 40.1C, clear blue and winds NNW

at less than 5MPH or 5.8KLM.......More of the same tomorrow. G'day

It's not any more or less boring than any other smack-a-ball sport out there.

I like the uniforms in soccer. Also in tennis and baseball because they stand still long enough to get a lot of great close-ups. It's really hot in HD. The DVR pause and rewind helps, too. :D

I just had to turn the volume off on the soccer games because of those god awful annoying horns they keep blowing. ](*,)

Quoted for truth.

Do people not have enough cable channels? Is someone being forced to watch soccer against their will?

Not at all. And I didn't come into this thread to join the soccer-bashing. But I do like to listen to the BBC News, and they've devoted 20 minutes out of every hour to the WC.

Obviously I'm not a US isolationist, or I wouldn't listen to the BBC. And obviously the US being out doesn't help me, since they'll keep talking about the WC until it's over.

US networks are annoying during the World Series, but not to that degree. I expect that the BBC will trim it down a little once they're down to two teams...but maybe not. They'll just shift to more coverage of South Africa (which IS interesting, even to me).

Let's not even discuss the nameless horror of the Summer Olympics.

after all the earth is flat with the US in it's centre.

oops was that a british spellling?

Yes it was...and an apostrophe that doesn't belong in "its" :p

(Your observation the other day, that the game we play over here should be called HANDEGG, was complete LOL material...)

I think you have it wrong. When the US isn't competing in an international event, the rest of the world ceases to exist. Well, except where we're fighting wars. Who was it who said that war is God's way of teaching Americans geography?
Quoted again for absolute truth.

Actually, I really like soccer and wish it would become as big here as the rest of the world. To me, the most boring sports are golf and basketball.

And American football is not THE real football. We just took the name and gave it to another sport.
Just curious, how old is European football, compared to what "we" call football on this side of the pond?

I find myself wondering, on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-in (great comedy sketch TV show from the late Sixties), whether Goldie Hawn ever said anything like "It may be football to you, but it's soccer to me." (Some of the oldest menbers here may also remember exactly what happened WHEN she would say something like that, LOL.)

plus most of them are very cute, Ben Feilhaber or Ronaldo to name some... When others are screaming for the goal they won i scream because the guy who won the goal usually takes out his t shirt and i can see his abs or hugs other players...

Yes some great "scenery" in the games. I'm convinced that, of the major sports, hockey has the best looking players.

That doesn't sound all that different from baseball, which of course is successful in a huge way...

Are you doing a deliberate parody of a pig-ignorant person discussing a sport he's not interested in?

Um... no. It's a genuine impression I've got from watching snippets on Friday Night Lights, Gillette World Sport Special, Varsity Blues and Transworld Sport.

One time I saw a receiver, running full out, jump into the air in a pirouette, catch the ball while facing backward, finish his turn while descending, and keep running without missing a step. If you don't call that athleticism I'll ask for your definition, which I expect will be new to me.

I could be a complete bastard and say "Wow, you saw one very athletic and graceful guy out of several dozen on a field. Can they ALL do that, or is he - like any hugely gifted practitioner of any sport or hobby - a fairly isolated case? One swallow doth not a summer make etc etc."

Come on, Criostoir. Every day people do something amazing and skilful. Sometimes I surprise myself by executing something perfectly which most of the time I'd struggle to pull off even adequately. There's no denying that that one guy you saw did something incredible - fair play to him, and it certainly sounds spectacular. Does that make every single American Football player as skilled, or even as graceful, as he? Of course not.

That doesn't sound all that different from baseball, which of course is successful in a huge way...

Hey, no disputing the success of American Football. Certainly its success revived a somewhat flagging interest in Janet Jackson, and raised shares in TiVo...

Yup...and the Janet Jackson thing, which only a few people even SAW originally because it was such a quick video flash, made the entire planet Earth stop dead on its rotational axis for a few weeks.

Is that the most "over-blown" event ever to happen in anybody's lifetime?
