Seven deaths in Catalonia (over 7 million people) during the past seven days; 2,000 cases a week this month, for the first time after 16 months; under 100 people in ICU.

Now that the >65 year old age group has reached a 95% vaccination rate, COVID-19 has moved to thinning the 35 to 54 year old unvaccinated herd.

COVID-19 live updates: COVID No. 1 cause of death for 35- to 54-year-olds in September [ABC News]
The United States has been facing a COVID-19 surge as the more contagious delta variant continues to spread.

More than 716,000 Americans have died from COVID-19 while over 4.8 million people have died from the disease worldwide, according to real-time data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

Just 66% of Americans ages 12 and up are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to data from the CDC.

Only 78% in Spain...

almost the same rate of those with one single dose.

which is around 80%.

This thread is as dead as the virus, its negationists and all sorts of covanarchists out there

So with fluctuating case numbers, but increasing numbers of hospitisations including ICU (overwhelmingly unaccepted or persons who only received their first of a two dose regime) it has been announced that our 'Freedom Day' of 22nd this month will be deferred until next Spring.

1. Indoor events will require production of a vaccine passport
2. Mask wearing remains mandatory in retail and other indoor settings such as public places.
3. No counter service in pubs/bars. Table service only.
4. No 'table-hopping' in licensed premises including restaurants.
5. Night-clubs to re-open for the first time since March 2020, but subject to above and also strict capacity limits based on social distancing requirements.

Further, all over 60s to receive a booster shot as soon as it can be rolled out. The booster will be Pfizer only, even for those who received a non mRNA jab earlier. Other cohorts currently being considered.

People are more nervous now (about the general situation) more so than last early Spring when Delta raised its ugly head.

So with fluctuating case numbers, but increasing numbers of hospitisations including ICU (overwhelmingly unaccepted or persons who only received their first of a two dose regime) ...
Which vaccine did they receive?

I was waiting for this time of the year to see what the situation in other countries might give us to expect in the next few months over here in Spain.

People are still pretty optimistic, now that life is virtually, on a daily basis, the same as it was before the pandemic... obviously, the aftermath of the apocalypse has left some patches that give proof that everything is not just exactly back to the way it will never be again. So far, the numbers have risen very slightly, (for example, up to 42/100.000) waiting for one or two more weeks to verify how the last easing of the measures can influence the development of the pandemic situation.

I still think there can be some elements related to particular local conditions of climate and athmospheric conditions that play a more or less secondary role in the transmission among more or less bigger crowds: there is, for example, the case of an inland plane region, famed for its misty weather during the colder months, that kept the cases and rates of transmission inexplicably soaring during the harder months of the pandemic; then there is also the case of the Valencia region, on the Southeast Mediterranean coast of Spain, having reported some of the very first cases in Spain, related to the attendance of an European competition "soccer" match back in February 2020, which did not experience a serious situation of virus spreading until the later waves, and that for relatively short periods of critical surge.

Apologies, just noticed the predictive text error. 'Unaccepted' should of course read 'unvaccinated'.

The greater number of over 60s, would have received AZ in the earlier months of the roll-out.

Only 52.6% of Texans are fully vaccinated.

...The greater number of over 60s, would have received AZ in the earlier months of the roll-out.
We're just beginning to get the results of mass-vaccination results with AZ. It looks like at 20 weeks after vaccination with AZ, the incidence of breakthrough infection is around 50%. The good news is that hospitalizations were reduced by 70% and deaths were reduced by 79%.

That's consistent with what you're reporting- that the majority of people in hospital were either unvaccinated or had received a single dose of AZ early in the rollout.

I started noticing that in the last two days of shopping there are fewer people wearing masks now. Without actually counting, I would guess about 50%in stores and malls.

Different here. I see about 95% compliance with wearing masks in indoor retail areas. But hand sanitising has dropped significantly. From what I see, only about 1 in 10 are sanitising hands as they enter or leave outlets. Several months ago, just about everybody was doing both.

I don't think I've even seen a hand sanitizer station in the big stores here since June. Smaller stores have them, including NAPA (auto supplies), Aron's (appliances), Verizon, T-Mobile, the Farmer's Co-Op, even barber shops.
