  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

A Gay Teen kills himself after being outed on the internet!

I can't actually believe this...

When I read about this on the news tonight, the thread on here was the first thing that popped into my mind, but I tried to tell myself that it couldn't have possibly been linked...

Well, I suppose I was wrong.

I've never been good at condolences, but I certainly hope that the room-mate and anyone else responsible are held to task for what they've caused. College may be a time where 'pranks' and 'good fun' are often pulled on room-mates and friends, but a line was crossed and sadly a huge price was paid for what these people have done.

I hope that anything JUB can do to help is being undertaken.

some people in this thread said that JUB makes some kind of "profit" of Tyler's death... I think it is true, and it is a good thing. If some frighten gay young men come here and find help to NOT committing the irreparable, it is fine with me...

I kind of agree. If anything, JUB is now out there even more, and it may be seen as a place for other gay people to come and seek comfort. His unfortunate death will bring curious minds to the site to see what his thread was about. I just hope that no matter what, when people are being bullied, they are not driven to the edge like Tyler was. I just learned that he went to Rutgers on, I believe, a music scholarship. And to read all the quotes from people who knew him, it's sad. To know that someone who may be hurting real bad does not always show it. What hurts even more is all the hate the two perpetrators are generating. Yes, I feel angry too, but telling the guy to, "Go back to India" does not solve anything.

This story just makes me really upset and angry. Upset for Tyler that he had to deal with humiliation, had nothing else to turn to, and tragically cut his life short. Angry that these other kids were so insensitive, had no respect for his privacy, and made a point to publicly humiliate him.

RIP Tyler. I found out about this forum when I saw a link elsewhere to the thread he posted.

Closely monitoring posts to what end? How are you looking to handle any inappropriate behavior should it occur?
We're not about to scrutinise every post that anyone makes! LOL. We're simply watching closely for any co-ordinated attacks. We have been the target on several ocassions over the years of 'drive-by' spamming and anti-gay flaming, and co-ordinated 'raids' by other boards and individuals. Luckily, there's normally a mod or two around to take care of it.

This is our haven, and JUB will not tolerate any abuse by outsiders towards our community. Where necessary, JUB is not afraid of using all of the facilities available to us in dealing with this kind of behaviour... :D

There is a story about Tyler's postings on JUB in the New York Times this morning. Short blurb on the front page and story on page A17.

Would the Moderators consider adding a forum category for users to talk about serious issues such as a personal crisis leading to suicidal feelings. It seems like this poor boy found some amount of comfort and solace in the advice he read on this site and spent some time here, but didn't really get into the feelings that he ended up acting upon. A place at JUB at the root level (perhaps a section within "in depth discussion") where at risk LGBT youth can cry for help more specifically might well avert another tragedy.

The coming out & relationships forum is the place for this - which Tyler also used. I doubt that his words would have been different if the forum was just labeled different.

Is anyone else very surprised that the mainstream media is releasing the name of Justusboys.com so casually in their articles? I mean, if the average person types in the url, they're going to get thirty different images of guys sucking dick, jerking off, and having sex.

. . . This is a good time to repeat that emptyclosets.com is a great resource for anyone struggling with sexual identity, social problems, and anyone who just needs a place to gather and talk with others just like you. . .

I took a look - great site. Unrelated to the current topic, I want to add that the "Similar Threads" feature there is helpful.

And is it time for another plug for The Trevor Project? http://www.thetrevorproject.org/about-trevor/organization

I finally figured out how to search the United Way agencies list and found there are groups for sexual minority youth in our area. My workplace is doing their annual contribution drive. I assume a direct donation (instead) would avoid any fees that go to UW, but the list was helpful.

CO&R is the general support forum here. The original owners of JUB also started a non-commercial support website called Empty Closets that provides one-on-one support for LGBT and questioning people who are in crisis or just need a listening ear.

Just tried to look up his name in the Members Search....could not find it.....has he ever posted here that anyone knows of?
I'm pretty sure the site owner deleted it.

Actually, our policy when a member passes away is to mark their account with an inactive status called "In Loving Memory". His account was not deleted however his profile is inactive in the "In Loving Memory" starus and cannot be viewed. His last thread is in the Garden of Memories. That forum often gets overlooked (although there have been about 50+ people viewing it today) but it is where remembrance threads for lost JUBers can be found.

Rest in peace, Tyler...

Clementi was not a music major but played violin so well he made the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, which is comprised mostly of graduate music students and undergraduate majors.

Saturday night, the orchestra will dedicate its concert of Beethoven and Berlioz to Clementi's memory.

Clementi's seat will be left empty.

I posted in the Tyler's thread. i was surprised that so many people did not know that the taping was illegal. I hope that the creeps out there who do not have the moral fiber to realize that taping people without their knowledge and posting on line is disgusting behavior will at least fear that the consequences of such behavior may result in jail time. The capacity of some people to be incredibly cruel never ceases to amaze me.

I imagine it couldn't be a secret for long. Should they have warned people about the nature of the site? Many articles didn't, although at least one called it a pornography site. Others just implied it was some sort of discussion forum. I can see the disadvantages of both approaches. Personally, I'm a little shocked when I accidentally go to the home page when I think I've clicked on the forum bookmark. (Okay, 'shocked' isn't the right word, but I'm still new at seeing this stuff.)

I agree. When I come here, I always type in /forum after www.justusboys.com, so I don't have to see that. I do occasionally browse through the videos there, but it's not something I prefer to see during every visit here.

I wonder if the moderators couldn't add a warning screen to the home page for a few weeks, or a disclaimer that folks would have to click on in order to enter the site, instead of being slapped in the face with a lot of sexual nudity at the onset with no warning.

. Drat  I even wonder if they regretted their actions.

On one hand I wonder if it was a prank that went horribly wrong and they are in anguish over what they have done and on the other I wonder if the only thing they regret is that they've been exposed.

I think the publicity for JUB is Fantastic!. The forums at JUB certainly made it a lot easier for me to come out.

I only wish the news outlets made it clear he posted on the Coming Out forum, and linked specifically for that. I wish the powers that be at JUB put, in addition to all the porn, a small box with a link to the coming out forum on the home page, so newcomers could get help if they're scared.

There was a warning that popped up but you could still see everything. . . .

Yes, the warning (looks great!) popped up several seconds after displaying the regular (explicit) home page. I tried it on two computers other than the one used for my previous visits - 4 seconds and 8 seconds - plenty of time to see something.

I'll admit I've had similar thoughts to Tyler. I think its hard being gay and not out. I think its also harder when society and your own family rejects you for being who and what you are. I wish Tyler didn't kill himself but then i think how many people have killed themselves this week? How many more suicides have to happen before this nation realizes what their doing to their young. I hope we do change but it seems the closer we get to equality the more unlikely it seems we maybe accepted by those closest to us. Bigotry consumes and divides us... I hope his parents the best and justice is brought...
