A Gay Teen kills himself after being outed on the internet!

I am still reeling over this whole situation. Tyler's life was so valuable!

I really don't know what to say at the moment - I am stunned by what has happened - and watching the video of Tyler playing Violin - well...

R.I.P. Tyler

I have just been on youtube and found a video of Tyler playing Violin at his Church:-)

Oh, my god, how beautiful....!

Tyler Clementi playing the violin. He's on the left side of the screen.

Really, AP? There's still doubt about this?

I'll forgo my usual "Shame, shame AP [-X" scolding and just directly ask (since they're here):

AP...what the fuck is going on with you lately??

It's called "covering your ass, legally".

Until the police run forensics on his computer and make a public statement about the results, all that it's possible to state categorically is what JUB's lawyer has already admitted - (1) cit2mo has not posted since Tyler's death, (2) the stories match up, and (3) his posts were made from an IP belonging to Rutgers U.

Saying more than that, at least publicly, could open them up to a lawsuit/contempt of court.

The story is now morphing from gay teen harassment causes suicide to dangers of the internet/lack of privacy.

From todays Newsday (Long Island,) pg a25: The shocking suicide of a college student after his dorm room sexual encounter was broadcast over the Web seems to show yet again how much a cavalier Internet posting can torment a vulnerable person, and raises questions whether young people in the age of Twitter and Facebook can even distinguish public from private."

While these are important issues, the more relevant issue is the local harassment - his roommate and his chums. Today there was a report of a anti-gay threat on a white - board in a dorm in Rhode Island. Thankfully, the school authorities acted promptly, removing the offending student.

I heard about that too. This has been a heart breaking week. RIP Raymond Chase.

Yes, I just found out about 30 mins ago.

Isn't it terrible?

I think this happens way more often than we think. We just don't hear about it. :(

You're probably right elvin. I certainly was operating under the illusion that thing were much easier today than when I was in high school/college, the late 70's and early 80's.

I guess I just wanted to think kids had it easier in 2010. I thought we made real progress.

Hey there. First post. I've just registered. Long-time reader.
I'm french, 30, living in Paris, and checking daily the US News.

Yesterday, I stumbled upon an article in the New York Times which echoed a thread I had read here a few days before. Although when I read it, it was already too late.
It's been haunting me ever since. It felt like I had some connection with Tyler through JUB. And we all heard his call for help.

I just want to let you know that this sad event has made the headlines here in France. This morning, I woke up hearing about it on a French radio station. A major one. And it's been published in mainstream newspapers as well.

I've also read today's NYT's article linking to Tyler's posts on this forum.

You probably all know how I'm feeling right now.

R.I.P. Tyler

"I can't believe the new today,
I can't close my eyes and make it go away."

This is just so unbelievably sad.:cry: I am glad that it is still getting press though, it's very important for everyone to know just how horrible and sick bullying is.

And I'm shocked to learn he was a member who posted here. I haven't been on here for a little bit and.. just... wow.:cry:

One person of who no-one seems to discuss all that much is Tyler's "date". I hope that he is coping and my prayers are also with him too.

Rutgers student Tyler Clementi leaves behind electronic trail of evidence

Rutgers student Tyler Clementi left behind a series of tweets and Internet postings before committing suicide last week; Clementi’s roommate, Dharun Ravi took a video of Clementi having sex with a man and posted the video on the Internet. The postings from Clementi and Ravi show that Clementi’s sexual orientation was the main issue.

On August 22, Ravi tweeted: "Found out my roommate is gay." He then posted a link for a gay men's website, JustUsBoys where Clementi had placed comments, according to Forbes.com.

As of Friday morning, thousands of people left comments on Facebook pages and with ABC News demanding that Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei face manslaughter charges in Tyler Clementi’s death. Last week, Rutgers student Tyler Clementijumped from the George Washington Bridge to his death after his roommate Dharun Raviallegedly videotaped him having sex with a man and posted it on the Internet. You even cann't imagine anyone could even be thinking about outing on the net.

I'm so sad to hear of Tyler's suicide.

I lived in central New Jersey for 14 years and had some ties with Rutgers University. It's been some time since, but this story is still hitting home.

And I mourn the loss of the other students' lives. And I pray any other gay teens who feel hopeless will find support and hope they need.

Yes.

Reading the NY Times today and seeing just us boys being mentioned over and over was nothing short of surreal.

I overheard several co-workers mentioning the site, which was also bizarre, and I was just waiting for someone to ask me about it... But, no one did.

What troubles me is what 'Just Believe' mentioned above. If only when the media talked about the site they would put the " /forums " part on the url.

I have to say I'm glad this story got as much coverage as it has so far, but I hope people don't think that these people did it for homophobic reasons. There may have been some homophobia involved, but I would like to think that any person who films another person being intimate without their consent, and then makes fun of that person should be severely punished, regardless of the sexual orientation of the victim.

I don't think he would have done it to a straight roommate, nor would it have had the same consequences. Had Tyler (note: not Taylor) been straight, he would have been "the man" on his floor and everyone would have been angry at his asshole roommate for invading his privacy. As it was, everyone was harassing Tyler for being a fag.

Even if homophobia hadn't played a role in Ravi's decision to invade Tyler's privacy, the aftermath absolutely reeks of it.

Yes, he not only went through the same cruel treatment as Tyler, but now has to deal with losing him in such a devastating way. My thoughts go out to him.

All these suicides have been very sad. My condolences go out to every family member, friend or anyone who has lost someone they were close to.
