Should American Idol go for One more season?

Re: The travesty that is American Idol

the show is rigged. entertainment, and rigged.

It is rigged, but not in the sense that the winner is pre-determined. Ultimately, it IS left to the voters, however, the producers certainly have ways of influencing the results...i.e. more airtime for one finalist over another, personality coaching, etc. But, if the show were truly rigged, the most marketable person would win every year since, ultimately, the goal of the show is to bank money for 19 Entertainment and SonyBMG through the success of the winner and runner-up, who are bound to release their debut albums on those labels. Past seasons have shown that, clearly, the most marketable people don't always win or place. Blake Lewis flopped. Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee both flopped. Bo Bice flopped. Diana DeGarmo flopped (Fantasia never really did particularly well, either). Ruben has flopped.

Re: The travesty that is American Idol

The show is rigged but not why you think. They don't care about whether the winners or runner ups sell albums or not. The only thing they care about is creating drama and keeping you watching the TV show so they can make millions and keep coming back every year to make more millions.

The kids that sell a lot of CDs like Kelly, Clay, and Carrie make Sony some money but the American Idol cut isn't very much compared to the millions they make on the TV show. If the past Idols sales mattered to them then they would treat the winners better. Look how many flopped! AI delivers the singers and Sony uses them to make a profit but that is 2 different things. 19 doesn't have an exclusive deal to manage them like they did in the first 4 seasons so they don't get to profit on them like they used to. Clive Davis is not the head of Sony/BMG anymore. Will Sony sign any of them or is that contract between 19 and Sony over?

Paula Abdul has a mini-meldown on 'Idol'

I don't watch the show. I've never even seen an episode of it. But I've read posts in the forum about people's concerns about it being 'fixed'. Here's something interesting I found:

Diamonds aren’t forever on ‘Idol’

‘Idol’s got some explaining to do after Paula's mini-meltdown

Is meltdown too strong a word? Probably. But American Idol’s loopiest judge made the biggest and most cringeworthy gaffe in the show’s history.

Since the Top 5 had two songs to sing, the judges were going to critique them after their second performance. OK, makes sense. But at the midway point, after each contender performed their first song, Ryan brought the five on stage and asked the judges what they thought so far.

After Randy gave his thoughts, Paula began. “Jason, the first song, I loved hearing your lower register, which we never really hear. The second song, I felt like your usual charm wasn’t… it was missing for me, it kind of left me a little empty. And the two songs made me feel like you’re not fighting hard enough to get into the Top 4.”

Um, whaaaaaaaaaaat!?!

Randy immediately jumped in and laughingly reminded Paula that the contestants had only performed one song, which she then gasped, red-faced and blathered, “Oh my God, I thought you sang twice!” Even Simon, who would have normally been making fun of her, attempted to rescue her.

It’s easy to chalk up the blunder to confusion on Paula's part but as far as I’m concerned, it can only be perceived in two ways: either Paula took notes during the contestants’ dress rehearsals and used them; or, Paula was reading notes given to her by the show’s producers.

Either way you cut it, it’s pretty damaging. And while the conspiracy theorist that I am may be reading too much into this, doesn’t it make you scratch your head a little? The judges should have no access to the contestants during rehearsals, and should only be giving feedback based on what the viewing public sees. But if her comments – which she stutters through, night after night – are written by someone other than her, then the show’s got a whole other mess to clean up.

As I said. . . Interesting.

Re: Paula Abdul has a mini-meldown on 'Idol'

This show's ratings have been declining since season two anyway.

Re: Paula Abdul has a mini-meldown on 'Idol'

I guess if you have never watched the show...why would you care?

Re: Paula Abdul has a mini-meldown on 'Idol'

How about it was Paula just reading the notes for the next performer after Jason?

Paula has health problems and maybe the fauz pas was related to that and not some stupid conspiracy. Maybe her neck was hurting and she was a little out of it because of her health

You think anyone listens to what Paula says?

Re: Paula Abdul has a mini-meldown on 'Idol'

well, in her defense, it IS hard to listen to 5 songs and then remember what you thought about them.

Re: Paula Abdul has a mini-meldown on 'Idol'

Every time I listen to Jason I feel as if I've heard him sing at least ten times. I thought Paula was as bored by him as I am.

Re: Paula Abdul has a mini-meldown on 'Idol'

I think this is incredibly blown out of proportion. Anyone who is a true fan of the show knows that the judges take notes during the rehearsals. It's been said in numerous interviews. In fact Simon said it last month when he was on Oprah.

She just got her notes mixed up. Big whoop.

I don't particularly care, but, as I also said in my original post:

But I've read posts in the forum about people's concerns about it being 'fixed'.

I know of a lot of people here who do care, and I care about them.

Re: Paula Abdul has a mini-meldown on 'Idol'

I'm amazed at how many people attack her.

I hadn't intended anyone to attack her. I don't really know her or the show. I do know, however, that the voting is extremely biased and unfair, but I found this portion of the report very curious:

It’s easy to chalk up the blunder to confusion on Paula's part but as far as I’m concerned, it can only be perceived in two ways: either Paula took notes during the contestants’ dress rehearsals and used them; or, Paula was reading notes given to her by the show’s producers.

Update:

Hey, Paula!

‘American Idol’ controversy continues to unravel

No stranger to controversy, American Idol is trying to quell rumours that judge Paula Abdul will be leaving the show. Then again, with ratings dropping to record lows, controversy is exactly what Idol needs.

After Abdul had the entire audience scratching their heads Tuesday night, host Ryan Seacrest set the record straight telling the audience, “The rumours are not true. She's part of our family and we love her."

The confusion came following Jason Castro’s first performance of the evening, when Abdul referred to two performances, one of which never took place. She later rectified the mix up on Seacrest’s morning radio show saying she had been thinking of a rehearsal she had witnessed earlier that day.

That admission had Idol fans even more outraged, arguing judges are supposed to see performances for the first time live along with the rest of the audience and that proves the show is scripted.

Abdul should’ve just stuck with the initial explanation of fatigue. That was the excuse she invoked when substance abuse allegations plagued the former pop star in 2007, when a number of YouTube videos circulated with Abdul appearing disoriented and slurring her speech.

Re: "American Idol" Finale Week: David vs. David!

Wow, that's alot of info......

Re: "American Idol" Finale Week: David vs. David!

U2 songs are have been cleared for almost every other Idol besides American.

This is the one year that I'm more excited about seeing the people perform on the results show than Tuesday.

Re: "American Idol" Finale Week: David vs. David!

anyone think that the biggest star is Whitney?

I thought Cook blew Archuletta out of the water tonight....David A brought NOTHING new to it.....I liked Cook's song competition choice better...it was catchy...I actually remember it....David A's I don't it was just another boring cheesey ballad like they always are.

Whitney? i dont think so.....probably be Madonna or god forbid Mariah....

Re: "American Idol" Finale Week: David vs. David!

Hoping David Cook will win. The finale just started and the top 12 sung "Get Ready". Archuleta is wearing tight white pants and showing off his bubble butt!

Re: "American Idol" Finale Week: David vs. David!

David Cook wins Season 7 of American Idol! Wow that must be a huge shock to so many Archuletta fans including myself. But David Cook is a really great singer and I can see him going forward with his huge music career. Looks like Daughtry will have some competition with this rocker hottie. Haha.

Archuletta will score big in the music biz too! It proves that rock music is continuing its surge in mainstream music. :-)

Re: "American Idol" Finale Week: David vs. David!

David Cook is really good but I really wanted David A to win. But what can you do now?
