Apple introduces iOS4 & iPhone 4

Steve Jobs introduced iOS 4 at WWDC San Francisco. The operating system formerly known as "iPhone OS" will now be known as "iOS."

The next version will be downloadable in two weeks (free for ipod Touch users, but the new OS won't run on the first-gen devices)

The new iPhone adds new display ("Retina display"), video chatting ("Face time"), iBooks, flash and front camera and better gaming experience.

I’m still trying to cope with Jobs calling the iPad “magical.” I kept waiting for it to morph into a unicorn.

A feature they could have easily added to the original iPhone (just like they could have added it to the iPad and, supposedly included the unutilized port space for it), they just chose not to because they knew that the iZombies would line up around the block to buy the “next version” with slightly new features year after year after fucking year…

Personally, I'm selling my Nexus One and getting an iPhone 4. Android's ALMOST there, but its still mediocre when it comes to media and spit and polish.

Am I the only one who just finds all of Steve's keynotes entertaining? It amazes me how every single detail is done with a marketing spin (remember this is a developer conference, not open to users).

I would love to see someone bring out a unicorn on stage, just as Steve says how MAGICAL the newest thing they've decided to allow on their device.

Intentionally releasing stunted models so that they can capitalize on their consumers need to have the 'latest thing' (by tossing on minor updates to existing products a year later) won't last forever. People will start cluing in and get sick of being taken for a ride. I feel confident that a backlash is coming.

You have an iPad, right? How do you feel about this, knowing that iPad 2.0 will make use of the empty camera port that your iPad 1.0 is stuck with?

The folks at Mission:Repair have received iPad replacement parts from Apple. While checking them out, they noticed a slot that seems like it could accommodate an iSight. So they pulled an iSight camera from a MacBook pro and guess what happened. It fit perfectly inside the slot in the iPad's frame. Back on topic; look at this new iPhone 4. It is a quarter slimmer than the current handset. It boasts a higher quality screen and better battery life, video chat via Wi-Fi, and a gyroscope sensor for improved gaming. (All technology that was avilable in 2007, BTW.)

And it costs... $199.

How the fuck are they selling it for $199, when just a few years ago they cost, what, $599+?

We all know the only reason they are doing this is to try and bash Google's phone. But if you think they are taking a loss, you are nuts. This just goes to show what their profit margin was like. It also goes to show what they've been holding back while intentionally selling inferior models at a premium to a hungry fan base.

But don't worry; I'm sure they have plenty more up their sleeves. heh Better camera quality, zero lag through improved processors... oh the joys they will one day release, which were created years ago.

I'm sure it happens to some degree - but I'm not sure that it's very different from any other producer.

Well I'll be thrilled when a new model comes out -- but I'm not a good example - I'm an early adopter on these things, and I'm not phased by subsequent upgrades. You might be right about a more general population, but I'm not the example that will prove it.

I won't pretend to know, though I imagine there are a lot of factors, including now knowing their market in ways they didn't back then, and moving on past the early adopters willing to pay more.

When they realized how negatively it was affecting sales, they started subsidizing it to the tune of $400. The actual cost of the device has INCREASED since that original iteration, but AT&T has been paying out the wazoo to apple in order to bring the price to $199 and $299 respectively.

IPS has been around since 1996. It is the oldest model of screen display advancement beyond standard TN. It is the price that makes it prohibitive, not the technologies availability.

The iPad (if we are to stick to that example) has to use some form of IPS because the technology allows for far greater viewing angels without loss of picture integrity than standard TN screens. Because the device is so portable and meant to be viewed in various positions, a TN screen would simply not do.

I'm Canadian. The iPhone has been selling for roughly the same price in Canada and many other nations (many of whom do not use subsidised carriers), much less AT&T which does not even exist here.

And that's a good statement to stand by. I agree. See, I'm not really all Grrrrr anti-Mac, it’s just a pet peeve of mine when companies play these games with consumers. I guess I find it a little offensive. Mac isn't alone in this, of course, though I do think they are one of the more blatant examples one could give.

actually the OS is really good, the only thing that sucks about it is the unnecessary restrictions that Apple places on some parts of it. However jailbreaking it to enable anything is very simple.

Their business model is far from perfect, no argument there. However the technology, ease of use, and the third party support on the iphone is the best of any platform imo.

And you can get real multitasking easy if you jailbreak.

1. Apparently it's the second time their breaking patents by Cisco. The latter already had a dispute with Apple over the term "iPhone" and settled that both can use it, now Apple uses the term "iOS", which is also already owned by Cisco.

2. AmigaOS has multitasking since 1985, for Windows it was introduced in 1995, now Apple calls it an innovation in 2010.

3. The new iPhone design looks like the Sony Ericsson K750.

I suspect for most who jailbreak it's more of a game - this is nice but I can make it better and they enjoy the back-and-forth of batting it back and forth with Apple as they jailbreak, gets reset, new jailbreak, etc.

Of course most people don't jailbreak. They just use it. I'm in that category, even though I'm quite certain I could manage a jailbreak well enough - I'm satisfied with it as is.
