Apple introduces iOS4 & iPhone 4

There you go again. There is nothing common amongst all members of "this generation of Apple users" regarding their usage of Apple products. All different types of people might use it for all different types of reasons.

i heard that's the concept of generalizations. if i look at videos from the developers conference 10 years ago and of the latest i notice QUITE a difference .. even more so if i read the articles about them.

Hey Corny, what are you admitting when you compile some who-the-hell-knows-what for your Ubuntu or whatever? You're admitting that you do not like it as it came out of the box either. Except maybe you aren't admitting it, you're thrilled with that for some reason!

Apples and Oranges (haha .. ) - when I tweak and compile my Linux system I can do so out of the box because the system encourages and enables me to do so.
Apple prevents you from doing so and you have to "break" the system to do it.

It was like buying a new home that had already been decorated by someone who knew every detail of my taste, furnished with the things I like, and ready to just enjoy.

That's more of an apples to oranges comparison than anything in this thread so far. You just compared a Linux desktop system to a mobile phone.

I can compile whatever I want on my OS X system, out of the box.

Phones have always had MUCH greater restrictions placed on them than general purpose computers.

Here in the US, in years past it was common for many carriers to not even allow the user to load anything custom, approved or not, and there are still many phones in use which have that restriction.

The iphone isn't as open as a general purpose computer, but it's still a step above what many phones are capable of in the customizability department.

I used to loathe Rogers. Hated them a few years ago but they've improved their service here in Saskatchewan. They also forgave a $3000 cell bill I accidentally ran up while out of country without any bickering, so my opinion of the company has increased somewhat. The only beef I have with them is their pricing (and btw Fido is Rogers, so technically three carriers).



I still have the iPhone 3G so I'll definitely be upgrading when the new version releases. I dropped my phone a couple days ago and shattered the corner of the screen, so it's not like I have a choice anyway

Sure I have. But that's not what you referenced. And do you realize that android and all the other similar phones with that type of interface and application model would likely not exist if the iphone hadn't been introduced? If they did exist, it certainly wouldn't be in their current form.

I realize the situation in Europe was somewhat more open, but most phones sold in the US prior to a few years ago did not allow you to modify anything on them and were seriously locked down by the carriers. There were exceptions like some windows mobile devices and some java ones (but java only allows you to run java apps, which is just one kind).

And while the iphone isn't as open as some phones, even with the limitations it has it still has by far the largest base of available software.

so? windows for sure has the largest base of available software for any OS. does that make it better for a personal computer? nope.

Apple are one of the primary contributors to HTML5 development. And this week they announced a new open standard for internet video telephony.

So, however you might criticise them for their closed platforms, they're also responsible for more installations of open standard software than any other commercial entity on the planet.

Almost 200 million Webkit installations in less than 3 years! An expected 75 million more before 2011. Characterise OS X however you like, but there are several million Unix kernels on Earth today that wouldn't be there without Apple computers.

I actually am really excited about the "visual" changes like, custom wallpaper and new way to view photos...those are my 2 biggest things. (call me superficial)

I'm looking forward to more responsiveness, longer battery life and additional mult-tasking.

I'm hoping, but not really expecting, improvements in syncronizing between iPhone, iPad and Mac/PC.

Actually, I'll side with Corny here. Adding custom wallpaper as a "feature" in a 4th generation OS is about 3 generations too late. And STILL no custom SMS alert tones? Seriously?
