Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Hello Johnnie it's sad to know you've been poorly treated by incompetent " professionals"
I hope you can get your teeth issues fixed soon , be careful when picking up fruits from high trees , always make sure your ladder is sturdy and whole before climbing ...

Have a pleasant weekend My Friend

Good Friday morning RM, Paul, Gary, and Frankie! (*8*)

I hope you all had a nice Easter.

I'm having one of those weeks where it just seems that the roof is caving in.

Tuesday: My cell phone company apparently is changing networks or something, so they said I need to replace the sim card for my phone. I tried to install the new one following directions, but I made the mistake of putting the SIM card in without the SIM card tray, and it's stuck in the phone, and I can't use it.

Wednesday: The day reads like the beginning of a novel. First, I found Pogo, the (sometime) resident opossum of my utility room, dead in the front yard by the house. Five minutes later code enforcement shows up, telling me that I have to cut and clean up my backyard. That seems to mean they're using aerial or satellite photos to spy on what people have around their houses. The guy is giving me crap about about maybe the "Village" (if you can call a place with nearly 30,000 residents in the last census a village) could maybe come in and clean it for me, for a fee. And you can apply for something called the "Angel Fund," in which the "Village" will pay for needed repairs around the house. Sounds tempting, but do I really want to give them all that personal financial information? Couldn't they just as well use the information to decide whether I have the money to keep up the house? I'm sure they have ways of easing you out if they don't want you.

Then I took my cell phone to the Apple Store to see if they could remove the SIM card from my phone. The handsome young man takes the phone into the back, and 10 minutes later comes out and tells me there is no way they can get the card out. Maybe my phone company can update the SIM card electronically, but that would leave the SIM card port open, subject to moisture and debris, etc., which will ruin the phone, so they don't recommend it. So now I'm in the market for a new phone.

Just. Shoot. Me.

I finally am able to get out in the late afternoon, and bury Pogo the opossum in the front yard.

Thursday: Comcast has been giving me all kinds of crap with my email. For the last week or so they've kept sending me notices about updating my passcodes, etc. I keep doing it, they keep rejecting the electronic passwords I've had stored in my computer, until finally something works, and they let me in. They did this to me again on Thursday, only this time I could not get in, no matter what I did, so I'm blocked out of my email. I haven't had time to call them to get this straightened out, but at this point, with the outrageous fees they're charging for TV on top of the internet, I'm seriously thinking of canceling their service altogether if they don't correct it. If you don't see me on here for the next week or two, that's the reason.

Dental woes, part two: I went to a periodontist that my dentist had referred me to. They're located in a pretentiously wealthy suburb known as Wellington, which I call Beef Wellington. The funny thing is that apparently they don't believe in putting their street addresses on the buildings. So I'm driving down this busy 6-lane highway, and having to make U-turns three times when I realize I must have passed the place. Finally on a lark I drive into a couple of different office parks. I'm looking for a four-digit address with a three digit suite number. Sounds easy enough, right? No. All the damn offices have three digit numbers posted, and and bunch more offices with the four digit offices behind them, none of which matches the address I'm looking for. Finally I see the four-digit number I'm looking for on a building, facing directly into another building, and you can only see it if you drive down this narrow alley. Never mind that the offices in the same building facing the street having the three digit numbers prominently displayed. It's like they're deliberately hiding the addresses. Is this some wealthy upper class bullshit pretentiousness? Finally I parked the car and went in the building, having no idea whether the office I was looking for would be in there. Fortunately I finally found it.

OK. The periodontist examined me, and notified me that I'm going to need a procedure done in a couple of places. Yes, more appointments, more work on my mouth, more shelling out boku bucks.

So. Next week I see my regular dentist for more crown work, and the week after that I see the periodontist. Oh joy!

Oh, and I did call (on my landline that I still have) the tree service to have them remove the trees that I think I wrote about previously. The guy hasn't called back, so maybe I can wait a couple of days to hear from him, with everything else that is going on.

(*8*) Sounds like you need a bunny hug

Awwwe John! It kinda hurt just reading about all your grief!

I need dental work rather badly. I'm looking like a hillbilly with missing teeth. I WILL get it done but I'm really good at delay

So let's look at something nice! From my recent trip..Gardens at the Encore Boston Harbor hotel.

Good Friday night, @Araucaria!

I'm sorry to hear about your dental woes, phone issues, yard stuff, and Pogo's death.

Hopefully things will get better for you soon.

Hello Johnnie , it seems you've had a quite stressful week
First , If I were you I wouldn't use the " Angel Fund " services , they sound sneaky and nosy
I know it sucks to buy a new cellphone as it can be aggravating but maybe it was time for a phone upgrade
About your dental work , wow
"Wealthy Beefy Wellington! Area does sound pretentious , and I find it shady that they make their addresses tricky and hard to reach , some weird stuff must be going on in such areas
You must have been attached To Pogo , I'm sorry for your loss , last time I buried a pet , it was 6 years ago and I still can't get over it as I was pretty attached to that unforgettable and beautiful unique animal

I do hope , that in the end your dental work turns out alright , be patient

Take lots of care Dear Friend

Good Saturday morning Frankie, Eaglex, Thad, and Gary! (*8*)

Thanks for the bunny hug, Gary. I needed that. (*8*)

Thad, that's a beautiful pic of azaleas and I think crab apple trees in Boston. The azaleas were beautiful in bloom when I lived in North Florida, but you don't see them much down here. And we don't have crab apples down here at all. I'm sure you had fun taking the Boston Metro and catching the Red Sox game.

Thanks, Eaglex!

Thanks, Frankie! Pogo wasn't exactly a pet, he just stayed in my utility room from time to time. I tried to leave him alone and figured he was just trying to get along the best he could. Still though, I'm sad to see him gone.

Last night I took in a Drag Queen Bingo fundraiser at MCC. They had drag queens perform, and then the drag queens would call out the Bingo games in between. Certainly not what you'd expect from a church!

Here's a picture I took of Pogo a few years ago, resting in my utility room.

Good Saturday morning, RM and Thad! (*8*)

RM, I LOVE :luv2:that meme!

Thad, opossums are a true evolutionary success story. They are the only marsupial (raise their babies in pouches) that have survived in the Americas. Opossums are very common in their range, which is expanding.

This afternoon I went to a memorial at MCC for an elderly straight man. He and his widow were members only for a year or two. A picture of him as a handsome young man in a security guard uniform in the memorial announcement reminded me that I knew almost nothing about his previous life. Seemed he was a Wells Fargo security guard in New York, and at one point had been involved in a shootout with robbers. Anyway, his family had a reception later, with lots of food. It was a good 25 mile trip away from the church, but I went, because it got me out of the house, and gave me a chance to not think about my own life for awhile.

Speaking of which, I got more work done at the dentist this week, in which they did the prep work for crowns on three adjacent teeth. But they made a temporary crown, a single piece that covered all three. They apparently didn't do it right, as it seemed to focus my bite on a single point. My powerful bite caused a piece of the crown to break off. It doesn't hurt, but I'm going to have to go back to have them redo it.

In other news, the tree guy finally came over to my house on Thursday to look at the trees I wanted removed. He said that he'd email me an estimate by the end of the day, but I haven't gotten it yet. And I had to call AAA to replace a dead car battery yesterday. It cost a bit more than I expected, and although it wasn't nearly in the price range as all the dental work and other stuff, it's still one more unexpected expense.

Right now my mulberry tree has been a delight, bearing sweet black mulberries for me to snack on, at a time when not much else is going on. Though I'm beginning to get a few mangos. The early ones aren't nearly as sweet and tasty as the ones which will come in about a month or so, when the peak mango season hits.

I forgot to mention that I finally broke down and ordered a new cell phone, to replace the one I can't use because of the SIM card issue. It's a Samsung, which will replace my iPhone. After I ordered it, I realized that it's an android, which is probably going to cause issues switching out from an Apple product. Oh well, I guess I'll have to use technical support if I encounter problems. They had been a great phone company, but suddenly I haven't been able to get them on the phone, they put me on indefinite hold. Probably they're swamped because they're requiring everybody to change their SIM cards (I still have a landline. Every time I think of dropping it, an issue like this always comes up that reminds me I need it). So I've had to email them, which I'll probably have to do with the phone issues if I have them.

Hola Johnnie , thanks for writing buddy

I hope that all of your dental work turns out alright in the end , may it not be as pricy, be patient
At least , you got yourself out of the house , funerals can be depressing to me as they remind us how brief our lifetimes are
Try to bargain with the tree guy so he doesn't charge you too much money
I've never tried mulberries , do they taste similar to blackberries ?
Samsung phones are not bad in my view . I've been using Samsung devices since 2013 and I almost never had an issue with them , it depends on what models you choose
I hope you get used to your new phone and that you have a pleasant New Week My Friend

(*8*) Good morning, John.

I need over $8000 of work in my month, but at 84, that is a bad investment. Hope the teeth I have left will last to the end.

I woke up to thunder stomping around the sky. I rained all night. The storm screwed up my Dish network and internet. Since the Indian tribes will not allow cables or fiber optics to cross their land, all our communications come and go by microwave which are open to interferance.

Life was simpler when I have only a land line.

I hope all your problems will be overcome quickly. Take them step by step.

Off to pew duty.

Good evening, John. (*8*)
I see dental work is a never ending story for many people :( Stay calm
I hope you enjoy your garden, this must be the most beautiful season of the year.
