Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Hi John! Hope you're well.
I get to see on TV what your weather is like this weekend! The PGA Cognizant Classic is at the PGA National Resort. Is that very near you?

I was in NYC at Tamron Hall's taping yesterday. The guests were Sheryl Lee Ralph (from Abbott Elementary and so much else) and her husband, Pa. State Senator Vincent Hughes. It was OK but I've had enough of TV tapings for a while! Tamron actually taped two shows but the second one was a "follow-up" show with 90% film clips we didn't see...we did see her interview with Kendall, a recent college grad who bought a one-way ticket to Spain to teach English. That will air March 28 but I wouldn't base my calendar around it.

Hello Johnnie
I hope you are doing alright
Have a pleasant Thursday and a pleasant Weekend later My Friend

Your weather was pretty good today. There was no wind...so Jake Knapp shot a Florida-record round of 59 this morning.

We had rain early. It dried out, but was overcast all day.

Tomorrow I think I'll participate in the retail boycott day. I bought milk and cookies today on my library trip so I have everything.

Good Friday morning Thad, Frankie, and Paul! (*8*)

Thad, yes, yesterday the weather was beautiful, sunny and dry, with a high of 81. The PGA National Resort is in a northern suburb of West Palm Beach, but I live more toward the south end. They usually have a big golfing event toward the end of February. Actually, the local MCC church is only a couple of miles from it.

I'm planning on joining the boycott today. Actually I think I have everything I need, so I probably wouldn't have bought anything today anyway.

This weekend I'm going to Tampa for a memorial service for a friend that I knew there. It's going to be held at some metaphysical church. He was a psychic, and would do things like astrological charts and tarot card readings. He had a lot of anger and bitterness toward his family and the way they treated him, and I don't think he ever got over that. As far as I can tell, the memorial is being put on by his network of psychic friends, and I couldn't find anything that indicated that his family did anything for him. For him, it really came down to his chosen family being his real friends.

Hey Rob and RM! (*8*) (*8*)

Thanks for the birthday thread Rob. :D

We screwed up. We both forgot Darren's birthday. It was the 19th. I was thinking it was in March.

Good Tuesday morning, Dan! (*8*)

Well, this trip didn't go as planned. I got over to Tampa OK, but when I went out to a restaurant to meet my ex, his husband, and another friend, a couple of warning lights came on, and my car was running rough. After dinner I managed to drive back to the hotel, and decided to park it until I could get it fixed. My other friend volunteered to pick me up for the memorial service the next day, and we were going to meet my ex and his husband there.

It turned out that my ex was sick, so he couldn't go, and his husband is dependent on him because of his disability, so he couldn't go. The church was in a small storefront building, and it was crowded with people from the church. Though it was interesting watching the family. My deceased friend's sister seemed to have arranged the memorial service, and she did a good job of it. His father made a speech about how he was sorry about the way he treated his son, and that he never really got to know him. My friend who drove me to the memorial was crying by the end of the service, as he had a long history with the deceased friend.

OK, Monday morning, there was a AAA Service Center three blocks from the hotel, so I drove it there. It turned out that an ignition coil had gone bad, and they recommended replacing all of them, because it likely meant they would all soon go bad, so that's what I did. So I got my car back after the repairs and shelling out boku bucks, and I drove back home, deciding that I had enough trouble on this trip. I likely would have gone to breakfast with my ex if it hadn't been for needing the car repaired and him being sick. I like to sit with him because we have interesting discussions and get caught up on things, but that didn't happen on this trip.

(*8*) Good afternoon, John,

I'm still alive. Been dealing with various problems and just did not feel like posting.

Sorry to hear of the car troubles and the death of your friend.

It has been getting hot too early. Never did have a proper winter. Only a couple days in the high 30s, other around 90F.

Looking forward to everyone going off daylight savings time. We do not change, so Sunday the TV listings will synch with my time.

Time for my nap 😴

Hello Johnnie , it sounds like you had a heavy and a busy weekend
I feel sorry for your friend as I can see myself in him , I Hold grudges , and I feel unappreciated , unloved and taken for granted by most of my blood relatives
I'm not bragging but I've got quite a few talents , and my relatives seem jealous of my divergence and they simply ignore me , dislike me , slander me or talk behind my back ...it's sad because one feels despised from such an early age ( 4) as if one had done something nasty in the previous life to be born in such a toxic and evil environment .
I hope someday like your friend I can find friends who can adopt me and who I can adopt me as my family members since most of my relatives are low quality people . a few months ago , I had a health misfortune happen to me , and almost nobody was moved by what I've been going through since last December , that made me acknowledge and realise the stark reality of the family I've got .
I wish I had met your friend when he was alive , the funeral sounds quite painful to witness , so sad that his dad acknowledged so late what he had done to his own son .

I hope you have a pleasant weekend My Friend , take care

Good Saturday morning, Frankie and Gary! (*8*)

Gary, I hope you're doing OK, and that you're not dealing with anything too rough right now. So you didn't have to deal with too much of a winter out there. It's been a fairly typical winter here, though even drier than usual. We had some chilly weather in January at the same time people were getting all excited about snow in North Florida, followed by a warm February. So far March has been an up and down affair, with the temp going down to 50 yesterday morning after a high of 88 on Wednesday. It's supposed to go up into the upper 80s again this weekend, followed by a low in the 50s Tuesday morning. And then rinse and repeat.

Frankie, I'm sorry that you've had to deal with such a toxic family life. Hopefully you can find compatible people outside your family to associate with, and who can see you as you are.

I've had a little time to digest what happened at my friend's memorial in Tampa. Actually, I think his sister kind of "got" him, recognizing his creative talents in art and cooking, etc. She had his artwork printed on the back of the memorial card, of a French chateau and talked about him being in heaven with his hot Italian boyfriend. She also had little bags with tiny replicas of the French flag and the Eiffel Tower to give away. One of my friend's psychic friends paid for a trip to visit Paris, something he could never have afforded to do on his own. And I did get to talk to another family member, who introduced herself as a cousin by marriage, who spoke well of him, and it was clear that she brought in a different perspective than his immediate family. I think the rest of his family couldn't accept him because he was just so different, and I think my friend developed a hard edge of anger and bitterness to protect himself.

They also were giving away some of my friend's possessions, and a woman handed me a stuffed pink and purple Cheshire Cat. Right now I have him sitting atop a ledge in my bedroom, grinning down on me. I have the feeling the cat wants to be some sort of a mascot. I thought about keeping him in my car, but he also seems quite at home overlooking me on my bed.

My life is getting back to normal. On Thursday I called Florida Power and Light, because a work crew had left some wires on the ground in my backyard last week. They sent another crew out to collect the wires, and then had to do some work on a couple of poles, apparently the first crew must have done a sloppy job. And I mowed my lawn for the first time since December, it seems the weeds were growing too high.

And I have a sore throat today, which means another weekend shot as I have to deal with yet another illness this winter. Ugh! I'm really getting hit this year after several good winters with no problems.

Good morning, John. (*8*)
That cat you got sounds very cool ;)
Take care of your throat, and I hope next week will be calmer.

Hello Johnnie , it's cool to know that at least his sister appreciated how valuable your friend was
I think he was also lucky to have friends who truly valued him , he was lucky to have been gaken to Paris by one of his friends as well
You are lucky as well to have been given that stuffed cat , it does sound precious to have

May he rest in peace

I hope you have a pleasant weekend buddy

(*8*) Good morning, John.

We have not had any real winter this year. Only a couple nights into the high 30s. Days have been in the 80s to low nineties. The winter rains failed except for a night of soaking rain a couple nights ago. The coast has had trouble with heavy rains and mud flows in the burn areas, but little has reached us.

Did you remember to leap ahead last night?

Good Saturday morning, Gary, Frankie, and Paul! (*8*)

Gary, I hope you're getting some rains out there. March has been up and down temps wise here, hot and then chilly mornings, though it's still warming up in the day. It seems rather unusual for the temps to keep going up and down so quickly. I'm certainly glad that Dan missed that tornado! It was hot and windy here that day, but it didn't even rain here. It seems drought is becoming a bit of concern. And yes, I moved my clocks forward.

Frankie and Paul, I hope you guys are doing well, and that everything is going well for you.

Well, the costly expenses continue, only getting worse. I went to the dentist Thursday, and the verdict sounds like that old Christian hymn, "Crown Him With Many Crowns!" She said that I have many old fillings, and that decay is setting in, so the fillings will have to be removed, and all those teeth with have to be crowned. It's going to have to be done in three separate visits, and require a depletion from my retirement account.

And that nasty sore throat from last weekend took the typical progression that colds do, spreading into my sinuses and causing sneezing and coughing for a couple of days. The worst of it has gone away, but I've had some lingering symptoms, with sniffles, congestion, a tickling cough, and I just generally feel tired and weak. I've resumed normal activities, but I'm still not feeling my best.

Hi Johnnie I hope your dental work turns out fine , take care of your health , I hope you are back to normal soon

Thanks for writing to me buddy , I've been doing o.k

I hope you have a better Sunday My Friend

(*8*) Good morning, John

It was nice to have two days of steady rain that soaked in and did not flood.

Hope you will be fully recovered from that cold in the next day or two.

My month needs at least $8500 of work. Since I am 84, I do not see that as a good investment as I could go any day now. Lower molars on the right side are gone and just hoping the lower bridge on the left side will last but is anchored on a tooth that might fail at any time. Then it will be tofu and yogurt :bartshock

Off to church duty I go.

Hi John!
I'm home and all is well. I bought bread and milk today (and other needed groceries.)
Ohio had lovely weather...until it was time for me to go. And it poured rain in Philadelphia on my way home. My shoes are drying out a day later!

I need dental work and am deferring it. I know it's unwise...so I'll break down and get it done. I believe my health plan has some coverage available.

My calendar is practically empty! A few library books to return, a Yankees game in mid-April, and a Boston trip leaving April 21. That's Patriots Day, the Massachusetts state holiday and Boston Marathon day. I will go to the ballgame the 22nd, 23rd, or 24th vs. Seattle

Are you OK? No more nasty surprises, please!
