Araucaria Appreciation Thread

Hi John!
Such a life, eh? Grab the goodness, and the mulberries.

I'm OK. I mis-budgeted this month, so the rent IS paid, but I'm s-t-r-e-t-ching the grocery budget. No dining out or travels until the 19th. Lots of library visits and TV! Pennsylvania giver seniors free transit rides so I get around.

Watch out on the 19th. Giant Food had better be fully stocked.

 Hi, John

We are now in the third night of heavy rain fall. The 70mph winds only lasted the first day. The desert will be a green carpet.

Haven't see rain like this in years.

Good Wednesday afternoon Gary, Frankie, Paul, and Thad. (*8*)

Frankie, I would would say that mulberries are probably more like blackberries than any other fruit. The variety I have is a black mulberry, and the ripest ones are very sweet. If they are slightly less ripe, they have a bit of a tart taste.

I'm starting to get a few mangos. The first ones aren't nearly as good or sweet as they will be at peak season, probably starting in about two or three weeks.

Gary, I'm glad that you're getting all that rain in the desert. We finally got some thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday afternoons, and it looks like more rain is forecast starting this weekend. For us, that probably means our rainy season is starting, and the drought we've been having will soon be over.

Thad, I hear you on stretching the budget. There were times when I lived with my ex some years ago that we had to stretch the money out so much it was ridiculous. As in, eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a couple on months on end.

Hello Johnnie , thanks for writing , I hope you have a pleasant New Week Buddy

Good Tuesday morning, Frankie! (*8*) Hope I didn't overwhelm you too much with posting "S.O.S. d'un terrien en degrease" to your thread. I think that song speaks to all of us who feel like we were not meant to live in this world the way it is.

Yesterday was a very strange day. It started very early when we were hit by a deluge that hit in the middle of the night, as in, we got as much rain in a half hour as we've had all year so far. I had gotten up very early and was having breakfast, and making some muffins in the oven, when the power suddenly went out at 4 AM. Mind you, it was just raining like crazy, there was no lightning and no wind with this storm. Fortunately there were only a couple of minutes left, the oven was already hot, so the muffins cooked OK. It was strange taking them out of the oven in the dark and buttering them, and pouring my coffee in the dark, which had thankfully already been made.

But the power was out for over 6 hours, and still out when I finally had to leave for my dental appointment. Thankfully the water heater I had installed last summer runs on gas, so I could take my shower. I just had to wait until daylight to see in there. The crews from Florida Power and Light had finally arrived after daylight, and were working in the rain.

So I made my way out for a follow-up visit to the periodontist out in Beef Wellington after a procedure last week. After the appointment I ate at a Chipotle restaurant out there, the first time I had eaten at one since the Covid pandemic. I don't like eating out much these days since it's now so expensive, but I wouldn't have been able to cook the hotdogs I was planning to have if the power was still off.

When I got back home the power was finally back on, and I could finally make phone calls on my landline. That was another issue with losing electricity. About 1 1/2 years ago, the phone company switched me to a fiber optic line, which requires a hookup to my electricity. There is a setup that requires 12 D batteries to maintain power in a blackout. I had planned to buy them for the hurricane season, but I didn't realize I'd need it now. Also, I made a note to buy a couple of flashlights so I can see in the dark the next time this happens.

So I was finally able to call out to Best Buy to set up an appointment to try to set up my cell phone. My wireless carrier said that was the only place that they saw that worked on Samsung phones (the people I'm talking to don't live in this area, so they're no doubt at the mercy of whatever their computers pull up). Remember that I'm having a bitch of a time trying to transfer my service from my old iPhone to the Samsung I just bought. Anyway, I get to Best Buy, they fool around with the phones for a while, and then hand them back to me when they can't figure out how to get around the 2-factor verification. So I came home, defeated again. My next step is to contact Samsung directly, but I've been so frustrated with this, I figured that the stress of fooling with this and the continual failure was too taxing, so I'll call them tomorrow.

Then things got bizarre. A policeman came to my door, asking if I had been alright. He mentioned the name of somebody I didn't recognize, saying something like that guy regularly calls on me, and hadn't been able to reach me in a couple of weeks. Really strange. Sorry, but I'm in good shape physically and mentally, I'm 67 and don't need to have welfare checks. Later I thought about it, and realized that the Venezuelan lady was probably behind it. She always texts me and sends pictures, etc., and sometimes invites me over. No doubt she panicked when I didn't answer her texts, and she probably got somebody to call the police department to check on me. So last night I tried to call her on my landline, she doesn't have that number because I haven't used it to call her before, but I got no answer.

Hello Johnnie , don't worry , the song moved me but it was very thoughtful of you to share such an accurate song

The power being off for six hours does sound aggravating , fortunately your water heater works with gas , next time you ought to be prepared with flashlights or rechargeable lighbulbs . Here in my area it doesn't rain that wildly but we have power outages from time to time , the national company does poor maintenance I suppose ., the lights can go off at any time once a month for 1 or 3 hours , and it's really aggravating.
It's nice that you got to eat at a restaurant , I miss doing it ... I had resumed doing it in late 2024 and early 2025 after a 4 year hiatus , but the economy keeps on getting tricky so going out for a meal is sort of a privilege nowadays .

I hope you can have your new phone set up a.s.a.p , maybe some acquaintance knows a tech geek who can set your phone up . just a suggestion ...

The cop visiting your house sounds strange , maybe it was the venezuelan lady who called him , but you'd better be wary of strangers knocking on your door , even if they're cops , one has to be wary of strangers knocking on one's door specially if one lives alone
Have a pleasant day later Johnnie

Good Thursday morning, Frankie! (*8*)

A bit of an update on the cell phone situation. I called the Samsung help line, only to have them tell me that transferring the service was the responsibility of my service provider.

So, I got the crazy idea of trying to physically fish out the SIM card from the iPhone. After all, I figured at this point I had nothing to lose. So I took the little pin they give you to open up the SIM card tray and a small pin from my Mother's old sewing kit. It took about 20-30 frustrating minutes, and I finally got the damn thing out of there. So I fooled around with putting the SIM card into the tray, and followed the online directions to install the thing from my cell phone carrier, which included entering the number on the back of the SIM card that I could only see with a magnifying glass, and wouldn't you know, the damn phone worked.

Well, sort of. I was getting internet and some indications that my phone and messaging services were connected, but apparently my cell phone provider had already stopped service on that phone. So I emailed them, telling them that I needed them to temporarily turn the service back on the iPhone to receive the code for the two-factor verification to set up the Samsung phone. And wouldn't you know, they finally did it?

So, I got the service back on the iPhone, and started receiving texts from the Venezuelan lady. I texted her back, explaining that my phone had been out. She texted back I HAVE BEEN VERY WORRIED ABOUT YOU in all caps, so I figured she was probably behind that visit from the policeman the other day. I also received texts from the horny dentist, who likes to talk dirty to me, and wants us to get together to fuck. And I called my landline from my cell, so I know it's working. It's funny that I have had to call my landline from my cell, or my cell from my landline, to test if they are working.

So, I'm back to where I was before all that trouble started. All would be fine.

Except that I had bought that Samsung phone from them in the meantime. I tried to set it up again, and I was finally about to receive the code for the two-factor verification on my iPhone, and typed it in to the Samsung. So I got to the next step. The Samsung gave me the message that it was setting up a Samsung account, and then showed that it was processing, but it never got out of that screen. So I still haven't been able to set up service on the Samsung. I guess I'll try again today. Stay tuned...

Oh, the wonders of tech. What would we do without it?

Well...I still read. I love my libraries.

Today is gloomy and sprinkly here. I may stay in.

Hello Johnnie , thanks again for writing to me

I manage to cope with the daily routine ... I hope you have your issues sorted out soon as well

Have a pleasant Sunday and a Cool New Week My Friend

Good Wednesday morning, Frankie and Thad! (*8*)

This morning I'm going to the dentist to get the second set of permanent crowns fitted, which should make it easier to chew on that side, since I have just about completely destroyed the temporary crowns she placed on them. Let's see if they fool around with them the way they did last time.

Well, I finally saw the Venezuelan lady for the first time, on Sunday night, since my phone problems started. As expected, she scolded me over it, saying stuff like she thought I was dead, coming up with all sorts of speculation, wondering if I was upset that somebody was drinking when she took me to visit her neighbors on Easter night, blah, blah blah. And yes, it turned out that she was behind that cop visiting me, and yes, she had badgered her hot shot grandson Leonardo to inquire about me. If the cop got the guy's name right, I would have immediately known who it was. But the cop said Leonard, and I was going, wait a minute, I don't know anybody named Leonard. That grandson happened to call her, and the Venezuelan lady made me talk to him. When I explained about the visit from the policeman, all he could say was "That's too funny!" Anyway, I made sure I gave her my landline phone number, and even my street address, so she can get ahold of me if this happens again.

So, I guess that with the Venezuelan lady, I'm part of her circle of friends, and that's permanent, sort of once I'm in, I'm in. Actually, she showed me some documents, and she's even older than I thought, 87 years old. I thought she was at least 10 years younger than that, she seems in very good health for her age.

Hola Johnnie , it's great to have neighbour friends .
There are so many Venezuelan hotties all around , that's thoughtful of them to worry about you , hopefully their friendship is genuine .
She sounds like a cool lady , I would like to chat with her ... I love chatting with youthful older people

I hope you have a pleasant day My Friend

(*8*) Good evening, John.

I have not had any trouble with my new Motorola smart phone. After 84 years without one, I'm still learning.

The old computer stopped connecting to the internet, so now have a new HP All-In-One. Can't get on JUB with the new one (long story), so must make do with Triple G 2.0.

The old one still works locally and now I will start transferring files by thumb drive.

I need crowns but can't afford them. Hope what teeth I have will last until the end. :dead:

Have fun with the hot Latin beauty

Hi John!

I was in NYC last Tuesday and put the details in my thread. It was worth going.

There's a Memorial Day picnic here and I'm participating. The weather here has been cool and wet and I hope that changes by Monday.

Happy weekend to you!

Hello again Johnnie , thanks again for writing .
I hope you have a pleasant Sunday

(*8*) Happy Memorial Day.

Your phone works and my old computer is now working. I'm happy and hope you are also.

Today was lovely here. And I'm stuffed. On the whole, a delightful Memorial Day. I hope yours was good as well.

Good Friday morning, Frankie, Gary, and Thad! (*8*)

Gary, it sounds like you have the same situation with your computers that I had with my cell phones. We both had to buy new devices because of problems with the old ones, only to have problems with the new ones. In the meantime we were able to get our old devices working again, but now we have already bought the new ones which we're not using. Isn't the world of electronics wonderful?

Thad, I'm glad you had a nice Memorial Day. On Sunday I went to the local zoo with a small group of MCC members. One of the big surprises was their Florida panther. I was surprised that she didn't roar, but meowed like a house cat. She certainly enjoyed the attention she was getting from the zoo patrons.

Frankie, I hope you're doing well. That Venezuelan lady is something else.

Yesterday I went out to the periodontist in Beef Wellington to do a procedure. At least I get the feeling that he knows what he's doing, unlike my regular dentist who seems to want to crown everything in my mouth. Though last week there was a different technician who didn't fool around like the last one, so the permanent crowns fit in with little discomfort, and she took only 3 X-rays. Much better than the dental tech that fooled around in my mouth before. Though last week my neighbor came over who is a dental tech. When I told her what I'm going through she told me the dentist she's working for now doesn't do an excessive amount of dental work. I wish she had come over a couple of months ago before I started all that work and got a second opinion on whether all that work is really needed. I might check him out, and if I like him, I'll probably switch. I'm afraid my current dentist is a bit too enterprising, shall we say.

Hola Johnnie , great to know you found a better and sensible dentist , probably your former dentist was more interested in profit than in giving the patient a good and fairly priced service, I hope everything turns out alright for your dental job in the end

I can't believe June has almost begun ... I hope you have a plesant Friday My friend

Hi John! Happy Friday!

How about those Panthers? In the Finals again! This season they've added Seth Jones, one of my favorite defensemen. I have a signed puck of his from his Chicago days.

And you got to meet a real panther. So cool. I know they aren't cuddly but I love purring felines!

Sunday I have a choice...Philly Pride, or cross the state to Asbury Park for Jersey Pride. I'd rather go to Jersey Pride: it's a better party and Asbury Park is transforming into a lively and attractive city.. I'll let the weather decide: I'm not making a long trip in rain.

Hola Johhnie everything's the same but at least I'm alive that's the most importnat thing

Have a pleasant weekend buddy
