are democrats going to seize the moment?

A notable win...

One of the legacies of Pelosi's terms as House Speaker and minority leader is that Democratic leadership positions and committee chairs/ranking member slots were handed out based upon seniority. While seniority and experience have value, it often meant that these positions went to Democrats who qualified for Medicare and Social Security.

The Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee was Gerry Connolly [D-VA], an 8 term House member. Connolly died in May after a 2 year battle with esophogeal cancer. The Chair, James Comer [R-KY] is 52 years old and has spent his term as chair to indulge impeachment threats against Joe Biden, claims of "stolen elections" in 2020 and investigations of Hunter Biden. Connolly's health issues contributed to a weak Democratic counter-strategy against Comer's conspiracy theory oriented hearings.

The previous chair, Carolyn Maloney [D-NY] was 77 years old (she lost her House seat due to the 2022 redistricting in NY). The chair before Maloney, Elijah Cummings was 68 and also died in office.

The Democrats just elected a new Ranking Member of the Oversight Committee: Robert Garcia [D-CA] who is just 47 years old. Garcia is a 2 term Congressman and former mayor of Long Beach. He's an immigrant, born in Peru. He's also gay and divorced. Garcia beat out Stephen Lynch [D-MA] who was 70 years old for the Ranking Member position. Garcia is expected to be a more effective counter-balance to Comer's blowhard, conspiracy-oriented agenda.

Hopefully, this is the beginning of a change to show more young and dynamic leadership in the Democratic Party.

Good news: Mamdani is 33 years old. Cuomo is 67 years old. Young energy and new ideas won.
Bad news: Eric Adams is running as an Independent. If Adams splits the Black vote in the election, it could be a problem. The Republican candidate is Curtis Sliwa, the Guardian Angels founder and now talk show host.

NY Times' take on the results:

  • Mamdani’s exuberant optimism attracted disaffected New Yorkers.
  • The Cuomo brand seems to have lost its shine.
  • Mamdani built a novel coalition.
  • Mayor Adams gets the opponents he hoped for.
  • Progressives generally had a good night.

From Betty Bowers:

Zohran Mamdani won because people are sick of:
1. Calculate-and-play-it-safe Democrats;
2. Christian Nationalism;
3. Republican xenophobia and their ICE Gestapo;
4. MAGA’s islamophobia; and

5. Politicians who talk about culture wars instead of the issues that affect ordinary people.

Nadler is a little late to the party, but:

"Nadler just endorsed Mamdani. A big deal both because of his epic tenure as a congressman and Jewish leader and because, I'm sad to say, the Upper West Side, which he represents and where I live, went for Cuomo and is home to a great many people who (I'm going to put this politely) need reassuring."

While the establishment on both sides of the uni-party melt down this week, let's see if some of the Dems hovering around their open graves get the
message.

Don't "eliminate" Citizens United; the decision in favor of free speech was correct (to have decided the other way would have given Congress the power to decide who gets to engage in political speech). Instead fix it with a law stating that corporations are not people and have no political rights period.

And don't break up massive corporations, just increase their tax rate by the percentage of employees they have who rely on any form of government assistance -- a 2.5% tax increase for every 1% of the work force (Walmart would end up with a tax rate around 38%; MacDonald's would be higher still).

That's a tough one. I'd change the pardon power by requiring a legal argument for each one on a felony level, but allowing pardoning of misdemeanors even for state crimes.
It's a legacy of the days when kings could do no wrong.

If one branch of government (and a jury) convicts someone of a crime, it should require concurrence of at least two branches to pardon them.

Nope.

They are doing worse than the GQP.

^ At least he seems to have stopped trying to climb into bed with the right wingers in order to court a few more GQP votes.
