Are gay pride day necessary ??

What?! How could that happen?

they elected republicans to office there because they said they would fix the economy.

Turns out fixing the economy would make the president look good, so instead they are back to the culture wars.

And THAT is why gay people should NEVER vote for the GOP.

>>>What?! How could that happen?

Yeah, someone should start a thread or something.

...... i just dont think a parade is necessary for saying "yes gay is okay". ......

Are any parades absolutely “necessary?”

Though not even a parade (where spectacles are mostly expected), I’ve never thought it necessary for cheerleaders to show off their stuff at public sports events. I’ve also never thought about complaining about it….or thought it made them straight peoples look bad.

Are gay pride day necessary ?? YES

you don't need to join or watch.

We're still arguing about a day(or two, or three) of fun that has actual meaning behind it?

As long as you don't drag down my day in October.

A day or two? where do you live son?

In my city we have gay pride everyday.

we are cool:p

We had our pride parade on sunday, it was led by the Winnipeg Police Pipe band, there were all sorts of politicians walking in the parade in support of gay issues, unions, churches, straight and gay parents and children, high schools with gay/straight alliances, all showing a remarkably increased acceptance of gay life styles and issues. You also see many people that are part of the non bar gay community, on pride day. I think its a great way to show the prevalence of the gay community in a fun and posistive way. Yes there are the ostentatious costumes but there are also regular people as well. Let your flames burn bright.

What is the point of having a twink wearing butterfly wings throwing out glitter on a float for 10 blocks with bad techno music? ... Every time I see this I just want to distance my self from the gay community. ... We want to be taken seriously yet we keep Having events that is hard to justify.

Have Pride in something you have earned and work for not something that you were born with .

I couldn't disagree with you more. Aren't they about to take gay marriage rights away in DC, or at least isn't it some the Republicans are fighting to end?

There is nothing wrong with anyone celebrating who they are. Without those who have been out front there would not even be a JUB to bitch to.

1969 is the magic number. Before Stonewall it wasn't ok for same sex hand-holding in a bar!!! And that was NYC! Go out and cheer those Twinks and leather daddies.

We hide; we die. It is that serious.

>>>And I have to agree about the flashy, flamboyant guys - those are the ones that get on the TV news summary later in the day. One day out of the year, people who have no contact with gays or lesbians (knowingly, at least) will see them on their local TV news, and what do they see? Queeny, flamboyant guys in ridiculous costumes acting all flaming, thereby reinforcing the stereotypes of gay men as effeminate, and the "Dykes on Bikes" with their loud motorcycles, thereby reinforcing the diesel-dyke stereotype.

Well, one of two things is happening. Either the entire parade is "stereotypical" - which certainly isn't the case of any of the parades I've seen - or else the news organizations are participating in some "selective editing". So they choose to show the more "flaming" portions of the parade in their coverage. So? Should we tell the more effeminate, the more scantily clad, the more stereotypically-gay to stay home, because "we don't want people at home to get the wrong idea"? As soreknees points out, these are the people who helped made it possible for us all to be out and proud in the world at large. What kind of fuckers would we be to say "Hey, thanks, but why don't you go ahead and go home now - you embarrass me"?

I agree 100%. Every picture or video of gay pride has to be a Drag queen, guys in underwear, or some fairy creature. You say is media selective coverage. Well if we don't have it in the parade then the media can't use it.

you know what fags like you miken1999 should just stay home and hide deep in that closet.

you know it's comfy and safe.

and if you're embarrassed of being a homo just start fucking girls.

maybe if you need dick you can find another freak like you on craigslist.

but you know what you should stop judging people and grow the fuck up.

"It is not the simple statement of facts that ushers in freedom; it is the constant repetition of them that has this liberating effect. Tolerance is the result not of enlightenment, but of boredom." Quentin Crisp.

When straights and gays see drag queens and boys dressed as fairies on TV, and say to themselves "Ho hum, whatever, let's see who's on Letterman," then the necessity for pride parades will pass. When people get tired of worrying about chaps and g-strings, they'll also get tired of worrying about what you and your boring husband do in the privacy of your own home.

No need to thank us.

So you'd rather it be the "straight-acting gay pride parade". Or, to put it another way, you're "proud" only of gay people who can pass for straight?

Go have fun and remember that not so long ago some of us lived in a deep dark closet. Coming out and seeing the light of freedom is pride.

BINGO!! :=D:

that's why gay pride day is necessary.

I think I tried to make a similar comparison the last time there was an “I’m so ashamed by the behavior at gay pride parades that I can’t come out, for fear of being associated with ‘them’ “ type of thread. As I’ve observed and others have noted, who wants to see the “normal looking” people in the media?

Most parades are a celebration and spectacle of something or other. Check the Google images for the following parades.(I've done all the hard work for you:rolleyes:) I believe the number of "normal people" in each one is about the same.……

Mardi Gras Parade

Saint Patrick’s Parade

Gay Pride Parade

Japan Penis Parade

When I first came out, I wasn't sure what to make of PRIDE in DC. I had just been to my first JUB meet and wore my JUB t-shirt to the parade, to which some friends escorted me.

I was shy at first and kind of stood on the sidelines; as I saw guys who I rowed with, who I played football with, who I had met at other events -- I began to laugh and enjoy the day. I also saw many, many straight folks hooting at the DC Cowboys, the DC Strokes, and some of the bartenders on many of the establishment floats.

As I have helped with youth PRIDE and with volunteers at all the PRIDE events, I have come to find out that many people have not been as lucky as me. My kids accepted me as gay, they have attended my wedding to my husband and my son has played football with me in the gay football league. My office pretty much knows I'm gay and provide my partner with benefits and me with unquestioned support.

But I've sat with older guys who everyone has abandoned; they have not seen family and friends in decades and could die without anyone caring. I've helped young people get into the limited spaces because their parents beat the shit out of them and threw them out of the house or cut them off from assistance because they dared to admit they are gay.

I'm performing the wedding ceremony of a friend who, after he left the priesthood, was disowned by a portion of his family and it has caused him great pain. I held the hand of a person with full-blown AIDS during a visit to check on his well being because society had largely left him to die (and I admit I was scared at first until I found how difficult it truly is to contract).

When I was straight, it was nothing to take part in parades dressed in all kinds of outfits that brought laughter to people -- be it at the annual Ionia Free Fair parade or the lighted Christmas parade. People cheered as the Meijer shopping cart girls performed fancy maneuvers usually reserved for military marching groups but while pushing shopping carts. Men on stilts, clowns, people with spray guns -- all brought shrieks and cheers from throngs that lined the streets with pride as the parade marched by.

Gay PRIDE is our time to laugh; to realize we are like everyone else; to be able to line the streets with straight folks and gays to enjoy life. I know the news media usually likes to feature the most outlandish -- particularly media from the far right -- but who ignore similarly dressed folks in "straight" events.

For so many years I stood in the shadows of the closet, ashamed at who I was and not admitting "I am gay." But in June 2005, I finally had reached my bottom (okay, there is a joke in there)....and I said those three words that freed me from my largely self-imposed exile.

I don't want to be known as the gay guy who happens to have the name "Tom" and who does such and such. I am "Tom" who has done (I hope) things for which he and others are grateful and, oh yeah, he happens to be gay. He's really no different than he was before he came out; it's just that he seems to enjoy life more. He's proud of his decision and proud of those that helped him....

mike has somewhat of a point. we are all adults and we can start discussing his question with rational reasons and disagreements without personal attacks. You guys are old enough, act like your age not 5 years of age. get your heads out of your asses.
Back to the question: It kind of hurts the gay community like any other parade that celebrates any other thing. like the ST. Patricks Day Parade with the drunk Irish people, they piss, shit, and pass out on people's lawn. hell in Chicago they canceled the south side irish parade. People see them as just as a bunch of drunks. Would you take drunks seriously who piss on your lawn? i sure as hell would not.
But what is gay pride and how should it be celebrated is the real question. Is it a parade that has booze with go go dancers? gay people acting wild? techno Music? behind that what is the parade's main message? is it "hey we are gay lets go party"?
I believe Mike is trying to say that the gay pride parade does not show the real pride of gay people apart from the partying and the booze. not saying gay people are a bunch of drunks nor anything. i believe he is trying to say that the parade should show more major accomplishments in the gay movement, the major fighters for gay rights, etc, not just floats with go go dancers and people walking down the street.
