Are YOU a Social Justice Warrior?

Every so often we hear the argument that LGBTQ+ activists are "too visible and blatant," and that "most" rank-and-file gays just want to live quiet lives and not call attention to themselves. Herein lies a paradox. The truth of the matter is that we have to have activists who are out front and challenging the powers that be with our issues, so that the rest of us can live quiet lives without discrimination, harassment, and bullying. We haven't made any progress by staying at home (or even in the closets?).

And I'd be a little careful about just taking our enemies' word that what they post in their memes is accurate. We have seen that they are more than willing to misrepresent the facts to get their points across, or even make up things outright to get people riled up.

This. I have heard this since before Stonewall. And the Civil Rights Act.

Something that a lot of people forget. No one...NO ONE...is forcing kids to come to a library for drag story time. Parents bring their kids because it is fun, instructional and a safe place. If you've never gone to one, don't impose some sexualized overtones to it.

And too many homos apparently either don't remember or never had the experience where they had a deep desire to cross dress at a very early age but were mocked, ridiculed or even beaten for doing it.

People who aren't trans have no frame of reference to understand how very, very young children can have gender dysphoria and know that they are not comfortable in their birth gender identity. And if they don't, they should really just shut the fuck up and sit down for this one.

Visibility can be an incredibly liberating and empowering experience.

Even seeing panto as a kid...or the drag up for a Lion's Club variety show can be permission for expression of an alternate identity.

America can't be celebrating Drag Race and Dame Edna and CIS het men doing it and then be pissy about it in real life.

Banning drag is about erasure because it is about banning trans people period...particularly in the backwards, backwoods, cousin fucker states where wearing a piece of clothing that is not 'appropriate' to your birth identity or genitalia can get you arrested.

The media will hunt for extreme examples, or gladly misrepresent an event or person in order to amp up the hate for their howling masses because it attracts eyeballs and that sells soap. It also helps distract from things like stealing elections through disenfranchisement and gerrymandering...or the fact that while corporations and a handful of individuals have made record profit hauls and got a 1.9 million dollar tax break, most people in American don't have affordable health care.

But no...pay no attention to the real rot...look over here...there's a man wearing a dress.

Spare me.

But, the individuals who have come through that change sometimes erupt with a fierce rebel persona that strikes back at society ...But, in the case of trans members, that very posture may be inherently self-defeating.

Shouldn't you also include an actual story about the State of Tennessee legislating the erasure of trans people?

Why the focus on a youtube video of someone yelling? They have every right to yell about this.

The real social warriors in the US are using laws to destroy lives.

The Navy will no more increase recruitment by engaging a drag queen sailor in this effort than Budweiser has been able to increase its sales by "partnering" with a transsexual would-be Valley girl,
And how many of the new recruits will tell their new boss they joined the Navy to make use of the navy's Norfolk Virgina Cumdump.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum.

Some people don't want to actually talk about social justice.

It is too often used as scaffolding to pour down derision and hate and sow dissension. To exploit moments of frustration and outbursts in order to diminish and demean entire groups of people they don't understand or know.

Not a social justice issue. Nor one of hate--other than that expressed by self-styled social justice warriors toward those who refuse to accede to and support the absurd and destructive demands they make.
The scene posted above is the least of it. The man is obviously disturbed, unhappy and unable to behave in a manner appropriate to his position. The woman doesn't hate him, nor do any of us who abhor the irrationality and violence of his reaction. Out of control. Good he didn't have a knife or gun. Hate is one of those words thrown about these days that needs to be retired.

Look at that Starbucks staff member clapping their hands in the video above.

That's what nursery-school teachers do to their children.

Obviously my point flew right over your head.

Obviously my point flew right over your head.

I got your point very well, my friend, but I don't know that this particular instance is the best occasion to make it. Describing the employee's behavior as a "moment of frustration" will seem to most readers to be making an excuse for the outburst -- and there isn't really any excuse for a service employee to scream at a customer, let alone to assault one, so by seeming to excuse it (even if you don't mean to), you risk losing a reader's sympathy, and then your point does fly right over his head.

I don't make any excuses for the employee. I don't know them or the stresses they are under or whether they are suited or not suited for their job. I don't know if they were fired or dragged across burning coals.

The point is that the video posted has no relevance at all to social justice warriors or the topic. It is a perfect example though about how malignant personalities on-line will exploit the concept of social justice advocacy to selectively present trash like this in order to collectivize, diminish and demean an entire group of people. In this case, the thread is apparently being re-purposed into a platform by the OP to bash, by use of videos or unicorn news stories, trans people...with the implication that each one of the individuals posted is somehow a standard bearer for them all.

This is another classic example by Grimshaw to encourage punching down.

"the asshole, a kind of universal vagina through which femaleness can always be accessed ... "

Who talks bollocks like that? Is it for real?

Academics and graduate students in certain humanities disciplines. Andrea Long Chu is currently finishing a PhD in comparative literature at NYU.

Thing is, speaking strictly about sissy porn, I think she's not wrong.

But she didn't win her Pulitzer for that. She won it for five essays, the best of which is how Hanya Yanagihara (A Little Life, The People in the Trees, To Paradise) tortures her gay male characters just so she can have her narrative swoop in and save them after they've suffered horribly.

Someone explain to me, like I'm slow, how SJW became a pejorative in the first fucking place? How much of a pretzel do you have to twist your mind into to land on "justice is a bad thing?"

It was used ironically (hence the word "warrior"), for people who fought for social justice only on Twitter and other social media, usually by attacking other people in a self-righteous tone.
