Batman premiere shooting, 14 dead

Getting some new information here on the Colorado stations. It seems he went to the theater dressed normally, bought a ticket and went into the movie then pretended to get a phone call and went out the exit door in the back of the theater. He propped the door open, changed into his body armor and guns and came back in. He had left the music playing loud in his apartment, possibly to trick the police to respond to a noise complaint and set off the bombs inside it.

After the attack, he seems to become briefly rational, surrendered to police and warned them about the bombs but he is no longer cooperating. The Governor is on speaking now.

the press conference on is bizarre

the governor is unintelligible - he seems so shook up that he can't articulate much

he keeps going on and on about how proud he is of the first responders then in giving the mike to the police chief he awkwardly asked the crowd to give him a hand

i guess there's no practice for this

surreal

just said that the accused purchased ammo on the internet

These assault weapons with clips that can kill a hundred people are weapons of mass destruction. Why isn't the government getting after those who support the sale of these killing machines? The NRA lobbyists have blood on their hands.

As for gun laws,Colorado law allows people to carry conceled weapons. Maybe the reason someone didn't have one is because they didn't think they would need to bring it to a movie.

I wish I could find a link, but there was a situation this rings a bell for: a guy was going to a movie one day, started putting on his concealed carry holster, then thought what the heck, it's a movie, why would I need it? Then some madman at the movie started shooting people.

The only way we're really going to slash back this stuff is to get the media to stop glorifying it. For all that they call shootings like this tragic, they still make the people who do it famous. Somehow the media have got to be convinced to never distribute the pictures of these shooters, never publish their names, never give any details that might give any sort of fame.

Granted, for those who merely want to kill people, that won't be a deterrent. But for a good number, my bet is that knowing no one will care will stifle them.

Probably wouldn't have helped too much in this instance. The suspect had a Kevlar helmet, vest a gas mask and tear gas. You'd have to be an exceptional shot to neutralize this kind of threat.

Crawl along under the seats and shoot him up the ass.

In full daylight, I could take down a guy wearing that from fifty feet. In a movie theater... not easy.

I just watched the press conference and didn't get the answer I was looking for. I have to ask, did they think the man was just in costume to see the movie? The chief described what he was wearing and, while I know hindsight is 20/20, what on earth did they think was the reason for the getup?

I keep asking myself the same thing. When I first heard about this, I wondered how he managed to get the guns in, but if that getup passed.... <eek>

It's even worse than had been first reported. He even had ballistic shinguards and one on his throat. He was essentially armored up head to toe. Nothing that comes out of a handgun would have had much effect on him. You'd need a rifle round to pierce his defenses. Most folks don't go to the movies with rifles, so there was precious little that even someone who was legally armed could have done.

And I saw that clip of the old guy shooting the bad guy in the ass! That was great!

Throat protection -- okay, forget my .357; I'm hiding under the seats.

If employers can give an MMPI (a psych assessment) to applicants, gun shops should do the same to gun owners. You can't game an MMPI. These questions and their answers give you the likelihood of mental illness. It will ask you a question like, "Do you prefer hardwood or tiled floors?" People who are depressed, bi-polar or have another significant mental illness choose one over the other more often than not. This or a similar test should be administered to gun applicants.

Interesting idea, but an MMPI isn't very useful without a minimum two-hour interview assessment. Are you planning to raise taxes to pay for this?

"Assault weapon" is a politician's term without any actual meaning. In reality, it means "any gun that looks scary to me".

Hundred-round magazines are like really fast cars: they're made just to say "Mine's bigger than yours". I don't understand them at all.

My first post about this was at 8:27AM in the "NRA Tweet This Morning" thread.
By 8:42AM post,in the "Roger Ebert's" thread, I have changed my mind about it.
So let my confusion about this settle down and I may come up with something understandable.

Maybe the cause could be hard-core violent movies from left-wing liberals like sean penn, nick note, and josh brolin that inspired the guy.

What use are these kind of movies?

The preview vid was up yesterday and was taken down. I also read that it was in the previews at that theatre.

Leave it to you to blame "left wing liberals".

And who's "Nick Note"? Any relation to Tommy Tune? ;)

Mad nutcase, loaded down with weapons claiming to be a super-villain, It's obvious, we need COMIC BOOK control Now!!! :soapbox:
:jk:

According to an obscure republican nutcase in Texas, it's because of the "Ongoing Attacks On Judeo-Christian Beliefs". According to Springer, it's because of the "left wing liberals" in Hollywood. And I believe it's because of the NRA and the lax gun laws.

What could it be?

Actually the Comics Code forced moralistic censorship on the mainstream comics industry for years, they have only in the last decade or so overthrown that. It is not an illogical argument for some moral crusaders to try and blame the movie's theme for the violence. As a civil libertarian, I wouldn't support that fight anymore than I support the ban all guns fight though.

The Comics Magazine Association of America (CMAA) was formed in September 1954 in response to a widespread public concern over gory and horrific comic-book content.

I remember buying comics with the seal on the cover.

Of course when something happens like the Aurora shootings groups of people must find someone or something to blame. It may be one thing or a number of things. I blame the shooter himself. His easy accessibility to assault weapons enabled him to fulfill his wishes much more quickly and easily. No, banning guns isn't the answer either. Stricter laws making the sale of these deadly weapons harder to get would be a start. No one needs an assault rifle unless you're a soldier. Some men just like them. As I said many times before, it's an adult toy and don't take away their toys or there will be Hell to pay.

Why can't someone walk into a sporting goods store and buy live hand grenades? Or an A Bomb? They can kill hundreds at a time too. If my neighbors down the street know I have a collection of hand grenades in my house they sure won't break into it. It's my second amendment right...... to bear arms and a grenade is an armament. So is an A bomb.
