Influence doesn't have to have anything to do with talent. Untalented people create smash successes pretty much everywhere, never mind music. As an example...Stephanie Meyer is a horribly untalented writer, yet has set the vampire genre aflame to the likes of Anne Rice nearly twenty years ago. If you've walked into a book store's fantasy section in the past year you've seen endless vampire novels.
People try riding waves of success all the time...and people did the same with Britney Spears. Her music was a rejection of the post-grunge/alternative rock and dance music of the early-mid 1990s. It brought back the bubblegum pop of the 1980s. Britney released her debut album in January of 1999 and people/labels started riding her coattails like mad...Mandy Moore, Jessica Simpson, Christina Aguilera all released their debut albums in the later half, if not end, of 1999.
