• national community-based mental health care
• affordable housing for all
• a minimum wage like in the early 1970s -- high enough that a summer's wages could pay for a year of community college
• universal health care
• drug treatment instead of incarceration

The last is not so obvious, but the history and stats show that the absence of each of the above contribute to violence.

The thing that will be blown off is that is likely a guy who was radicalized on the internet to the point that he was willing to assassinate one of the guys who was part of the radicalizing. Instead, everyone will focus on the right vs left aspect. Radicalization is radicalization.

It always amazes me how when it's Islamists doing the radicalization, the Western media states clearly that it's online indoctrination and radicalization. When it's Christians doing the online indoctrination and radicalization, they don't see it for what it is.

Trump was on Fox this morning starting that process, saying that radicals on the right just want to get rid criminals and that it's radicals on the left who are the problem.

I'm guessing that if this guy was a Mormon from Utah, he's not going to fit into a tidy left vs right box in the way that the White House would like to see.

The Utah governor deserves credit for doing what leaders are supposed to do: portraying a calm demeanor, refocusing the public and discouraging revenge and fingerpointing.

On the other hand, the person who shows up in the Oval Office periodically for photo-ops believes that he can stay in power if he claims that everything he's doing is to "combat crime", so he will twist the truth and outright lie to make it seem like the shooter was a "radical leftist" and a Democrat and that Democrats are responsible for crime.

Now that one of his ICE agents was shot today in Chicago, Trump will move on to Memphis claiming that "Democrat crime" is out of control there and he must send in the National Guard. A reminder: the Tennessee governor apparently didn't think that crime was out of control in Memphis just last month when he pulled 160 TN National Guard members and sent them to DC for Trump's folly in DC.

There was an interesting stat in the labor reports this month- the number of absent workers for more than 1 week has doubled from the average level. Employers report this statistic to give a measure of work productivity hours lost to jury duty and military service. In the past 8 months, 90,000 instances of workers being out for more than a week were reported.

The last time this happened was in 2006 when the National Guard was sent to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The amount of money being wasted on this little orange performance is millions of dollars and it's affecting the labor market. Some employers, particularly state and federal employers, continue paying employees on National Guard service, but many of these workers are not getting a paycheck from their employer. And in the uncertain economic conditions, employers will either have to bring in temporary workers or burden other employees to pick up the slack.
