You directly insinuated that taxation is related with some businesses "not doing so well."

If they aren't in the black they aren't paying taxes in the first place, so what the hell did it have to do anything?

Gee, is it possible for someone to earn a double F-, in History and Economics? The quality of teaching at Troglodyte U must be reaching truly abysmal levels.

One of the classic examples would be the early 19th century British Corn Laws, with buoyed the price of native production by keeping out cheaper imports. [Note for those with an All-American experience: 'corn' in this definition is a grain which may be ground, such as to produce flour for bread, or other like products]

The repeal of the Corn Laws, largely in response to the Great Famine in Ireland, led to an agricultural depression that was devastating for British agriculture, and led to Britain becoming a food-importing nation. Why produce something when you can be undersold by cheap imports pouring in from America, Canada, and Russia?

The value of agricultural land tumbled; agricultural workers (who till then had made up a high percentage of the British workforce) lost their jobs, and were turned off the land into the cities.

It's a classic example of Free Trade in action. It's also a classic example of the Conservative predictions regarding the repeal being right. I am surprised Ben doesn't know this, or doesn't mention this at all!

Oh, and one of the longer-term effects of the repeal was the necessity of British participation in World War I. After all, if you import most of your food, you are forced into belligerence when actions by others threaten to cut your supply lines, leaving you without food.
 
Corporations and the filthy rich shouldn't pay a dime in taxes. The poor should shut their ungrateful mouths and go live under a bridge. The poor should be ecstatic about earning $1 an hour by cleaning the toilets of the rich with their tongues. The USA is now a full blown plutocracy/oligarchy. The Constitution needs to be changed.

The wealthy don't give a fuck about the environment. They don't give a shit about the melting icecaps. They don't care one whit about endangered species. The ONLY thing they care for is MONEY. Which is what the religious right also worships. MONEY is ALL that matters.

The oceans are becoming more acidic. The coral reefs are dying off (bleaching). With them go the fish. With the acidification of the oceans, the plankton dies off. Guess where the vast majority of oxygen in the atmosphere comes from? Plankton. So, we are making ourselves go extinct. Hope the cockroaches enjoy the planet, because Homo Sapiens will be gone.

We are pretty much committed to a 6th mass extinction. And, while I personally believe humans will find a way to survive this, there is a reasonable chance we could be among the extinct. Which would be a wonderful thing for planet earth.

That is palpable nonsense. The governent and laws are clearly hostile to corporations, and increasingly so each year.75,000 pages of regulations in2014 alone. We have the highest corporate tax rate in the industrial world, and some crporations are moving out to avoid them.

The World Bank Group places the United States within the top seven countries in Ease of Doing Business, slipping from third place in 2006. If it were not for the corporate tax rate it very well may be number one. So clearly there are other sets of laws, or lack thereof, that make business very easy to conduct here. I doubt that corporations will relocate entirely based on one factor alone, as there are only six countries (just one of them English speaking) where business is easier to conduct.

Red is historically the color of marxism/communism. During one election, a liberal journalist decided to color Republican states red rather than democrat ones, obviously because to color the democtat states red would play into the accusation that the democrats are socialists. Democrats until this election have always tried to hide their socialism/marxism.

Neither party supports libertarianism.

Democrats support spending money on the society as a whole. Republicans support retaining as much of it as humanly possible in the hands of elites, bankers, corporate entities and the non-working investor class. And have entrenched habits of abusing, as far as possible, subsidies, bankruptcy laws, diluted liabilities, tax-paid resources (infrastructure, welfare, food stamps to evade proper pay) and of course, bailouts.

Republicans are just as for so-called "redistribution of wealth." They just support distributing as much of it as possible to the people who need it the least.

I had just assumed it was related to the red confederacy flag versus the blue union flag.

Ther are conflicting stories as shown by the Wikipedis article. Failing a definitive answer I continue to accept the desire of liberals to avoid the liberal-- communist association. We can never know the internal intent of the originating individual.
