Much better than Madonna!!! I feel she isn't trying to be young.

My review:

From Wikipedia:

Recorded over a period of three years since signing with the independent Burgundy label in 2005, Crayons marks Summer's first full-length studio album in over seventeen years since the release of 1991's Mistaken Identity. She worked on the album with a number of different producers and songwriters including Greg Kurstin, Danielle Brisebois, J. R. Rotem, Toby Gad, Lester Mendez and Evan Bogart, the son of Summer's former record label boss at Casablanca Records, Neil Bogart.

Summer recorded twelve songs for the album and the title track is a duet between her and reggae veteran Ziggy Marley. The album's first official single, "Stamp Your Feet", was released to radio on April 15, 2008 (2008-04-15). A promotional single for the Latin-flavored "I'm a Fire" recently reached number-one giving Summer her 13th number-one hit on Billboard's dance club-music play chart making her the first artist to have a #1 dance hit in each of the past four decades.

1 "Stamp Your Feet" 3:38
2 "Mr. Music" 3:15
3 "Crayons" f/Ziggy Marley 3:21
4 "The Queen Is Back" 3:30
5 "Fame (The Game)" 4:04
6 "Sand on My Feet" 3:51
7 "Drivin' Down Brazil" 4:43
8 "I'm a Fire" 7:11
9 "Slide Over Backwards" 4:11
10 "Science of Love" 3:48
11 "Be Myself Again" 4:20
12 "Bring Down the Reign" 4:34
13 "It's Only Love"(Bonus) 7:54

After 17 years, she's back!!! I am listening to the album for the second time this afternoon. It leaked this morning, and it's a great thing it did!! The album is wonderful mix of dance, R&B, pop, with Latin, Jamaican and African touches, as well as a feel of gospel/church music.

"Stamp Your Feet" starts the album, a great, positive, uplifting track that makes you move. "Mr. Music" shows that Summer is with current trends, still shaking it at 59, and that she has an iPod. The track featuring Ziggy Marley is called "Crayons" and is a hot beat with an island twist. Summer even tries on the accent but actually has success unlike Mariah Carey who attempted the same on her recent record "E=MC2".

"Fame (The Game)" talks of the pros and cons of Hollywood life, with a cool vocal style. Highlights on the album would have to be "Sand On My Feet", a heartfelt love song, and the rock-tinged "Science Of Love". "Bring Down The Reign" has an interesting tribal chant inserted, which helps to finish off the album. It's a great song, keeping in line with the "Queen" theme of the album.

Overall, the effort is an admirable one. Summer comes back after 17 years with contemporary production while remaining true to her roots. It's the disco queen modified for the present. And it works. Make sure to pick up your copy on May 20th in the States, and June 23rd in the UK.

6/5

Re: Donna Summer : "Crayons"

And 17 years later the Queen returned...

I just finished listen to "Crayons" and I must say that all the hype surrounding Donna Summer's new album in almost two decades was justified. I've been a longtime fan so I think I'm in title to declare "Crayons" as her best work since "She works hard for the money" in 1983!!!

What I like about this new release is the fact that she kept the musical spirit of her best years with just a little, and much needed, sound update.

The 12 songs are solid. No filling here!. The first single, "I'm a fire", is extremely infectious, and so it's the current one "Stamp your feet". But there are true gems like the amazing "Slide over backwards" and the brazilian flavored "Drivin' down Brazil".

Another highlight is the electronic number "Fame (The game)", a killer track that flirts with the trademark sound of bands like Daft Punk and Air.

The last two tracks are ballads and they're fortunately a cut above the usual formula for a slow song. "Be myself again" is precious and timeless but "Bring down the reign", with its ethnic influences, closes the album on a high note.

If I'm not giving the album a 5 star review is only because of the reggae oriented duet with Ziggy Marley on the title track. "Crayons" (I'm referring to the song, of course) sounds tame and uninspired most of the time and eventually gets nowhere. That's the the only weak spot I could find on this remarkable and much anticipated return that I highly recommend.

Re: Donna Summer : "Crayons"

Im glad you all are enjoying Donna Summer..............all I can say is you must have short memories.............this is the lady who said "Gays are an abomination" and told everyone it was wrong in the eyes of the Lord...........All the gays stopped buying her records, and bang went her career.................................you want to resurrect it?

Re: Donna Summer : "Crayons"

I thought she recanted. You know, when her career went south. But I'll take apologetic over non-apologetic any day.

I think it was very clear that I was only reviewing her new album, not celebrating her poor minded remarks from the past.

But if she's now sorry for that sad statement, then good for her. I believe we all deserve a second chance. Especially when our wrong judgments are consequence of our own ignorance.

Re: Donna Summer : "Crayons"

Here's what I pulled from Wiki:
A more painful incident came in the early 1980s with reports that Summer had made anti-gay remarks associated with the AIDS epidemic. Her songs were banned for a number of years in some gay establishments over these rumors, the fallout from which had a huge negative impact on her career. Summer's records were even being sent back to her record company by outraged fans in protest. Summer has long denied such allegations, claiming that she was misquoted and she finally took legal action against a newspaper which reprinted the rumors during a review of a concert. Summer tearfully stated, "I never said anything that was written about me in that article". Summer has headlined for AIDS benefits and has donated proceeds to AIDS research. As recently as 2006, she was asked about the rumors by a Canadian newspaper. "So many people in my audiences are gay. I can’t live my life trying to assure people of anything. You have to live knowing who you are. I think that my actions and the person that I am speak louder than somebody else’s misgivings or lies about me," Summer responded. "They print all kinds of shit about people all the time but you can’t run after every single lie. You tell people the truth and if they choose to believe you, they do."
Radioian, since you brought it up, can you shed more light on this? Is it just a case of her trying to cover up shit she said or was it never really confirmed that she said any of those things, just rumored?

Also, we may not have short memories, since not all of us were cognoscente during the 80's. I wasn't even born until half way into the decade.

Re: Donna Summer : "Crayons"

My brother made some "fag jokes" while we were growing up.

He learned.
He changed.
He apologized to me if he ever hurt me.

I could take a stand against homophobia in all forms by totally cutting him out of my life. Or I could forgive. I chose the latter.

Donna (may have) said some pretty mean stuff in the past. (For the record, so has Gloria Gaynor, but I don't see any gays burning their copies of "I Will Survive".) She learned. She changed. She apologized. Whether it's out of a true change in viewpoint, or whether she saw her money slipping away, is immaterial. All I can judge her on is her actions, and her actions seems to indicate that she's cool. :)

Re: Donna Summer : "Crayons"

hhhhhhmm ok guys--I suppose it WAS a long time ago, and I dont know if she apologised for it--we here in the UK never heard any, I think........

Re: Donna Summer : "Crayons"

Let's talk about the ALBUM and not the past mistakes she may or may have not made.

I was glad she was Idol, she's #17 on iTunes albums and hopefully she sells well on physicals.

Re: Donna Summer : "Crayons"

I heard on Entertainment Tonight (ET) and she sang Stamp your Feet. It's a great dance song.

I saw her in concert last year and she was awesome. Great voice and great performer. Donna Summer is the Queen of Disco and she still rocks!
