Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

It couldn't possibly have had anything to do with Cowell leaving the show.

As far as I'm concerned, the show itself is causing the falling ratings. I've never watched it, but I've read a lot about it here and, after years and years of controversy, either the viewers are getting sick of it or there isn't much left to keep them watching.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

Vote for the Worst and Survivor Sucks people are the reason our entertainment industry is so fucked up. People that are mindless contrarians in the hivemind define what gets the light of day. For example, they were all for Adam Lambert until it became obvious he was popular, then he became a "fat screecher glambert" and they made it their mission to destroy him. Total hypocrites, total losers, totally what's wrong with entertainment today.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

^Or maybe what's wrong with entertainment today is "having the right look" or "a look that'll get you press" as opposed to... you know, being talented?

The last few seasons the talented person has gotten 2nd while the cardboard cutout got 1st place. This was thanks to the people that are against the "mainstream". Hipster anti-hipsters, if you will.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

I don't think it was Ellen that caused the decline, I think it was the very obvious homosexual tension between Simon and Seacrest.

Almost every episode it seemed like they were on the verge of just ripping each others clothes off and going at it right there on the judges table.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

And I like how glee was a chart topper this season and the whole show is blatant activism.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

Idol was broken before Ellen became a judge.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

Ahh yes, another steaming pile of Christian horseshit.

Ellen should have stayed in the closet like a good Christian girl. Of course, it will be kind of crowded what with Ryan already in there...

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

Yes Ellen hurt Idol but not because she is a lesbian. She hurt it because she has no business at all critiquing "musicians" when she has no music background at all.

And what kind of background in beauty contests does Rush Limbaugh have?

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

I never like the show from the start; it's harassing people in front of the nation and expecting them not to cry (or yes?) because the harassment's professional. But as I watched a glimpse of episodes from season to season, the show's surely crashing down, not only from the lame shows, but also from the contestants---talent slowly disappears, no?

So no, Ellen's not the cause. But her appearance there is simply wrong, like Steve Carrel cast as the next James Bond with Tina Fey as the Bond gi-oh wait, we have that already.

The harassment was an unexpected running gag. I'm sure there wasn't an initial intention to have entire episodes worth of oblivious people who think they can sing but can't. If you can't sing you shouldn't audition for a singing contest.

But yeah, this season's talent was almost nonexistent. But on the other hand, last season was full of talent. It's not a trend, it's hit or miss.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

This is the first time I didn't watch one episode of AI after the semi-finals. The singers were just bad - mediocre to plain awful. THAT'S the main reason for the rating slide, along with it being an aging show. In truth the ratings have been slipping for a few years now.

As far as the idiot quoted in the OP, he's just a fundie trying to get some air time and keep his flock happy.

There was a thread about his statement on the Entertainment Weekly site, and there were pages and pages of regular folks, almost all of them straight, saying what an idiot he was. Even a lot of people who described themselves as conservative Christians called him a loon.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

Old and tired show is old and tired. That's why the ratings went down.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

Ellen didn't hurt Idol. Idol, hurt idol.

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

There's a ton of shit wrong with American Idol...Ryan Seacrest is insufferably annoying and turned on the crazy switch this season, Ellen - bless her heart - has no place as a judge on a musical show, many of the contestants are forced into genres they obviously can't sing (theme nights), the judges - when the top twelve arrive - are the only qualified people to actually select who is the best singer yet they sit there with no purpose for months on end afterward and the main problem in my opinion is the casting agents during auditions. They aren't letting the right people in. I find it extremely difficult believing that out of the 85k+ people auditioning at each location for this show that the top twelve this past season were the 'best'.

(For those that don't know...you see a casting agent, then you see a producer, then you see the actual judges...they only see a hundred or so people a day.)

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

anyway that show is bad and ellen was bad and the singers were just horrible.

So true. It was painful to watch. So so painful. I would never have sat through it every week had it not been for someone who really wanted me too. Just terrible.

Ellen was pretty useless. She didn't hurt the show for being a lesbian though

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

The Public has caught on to the formula in producing so-called 'reality' shows.

The 'Judges' have nothing to do with who wins or loses. It is all the producers' decisions. Amazing how the 'last contestant' always gives a 'WOW' performance, be it during an audition episode or an elimination show.

I quit watching AI when all the contestants came out of the same cookie cutter. Twentyish kids, surprise so-called talent, etc. The ones on the show are the ones that can do OK with some things and yet will eventually crash and burn in a ratings improving spectacular fashion.

AI is about as Real as 'Glee.' :D

Re: Did Ellen hurt Idol?

Ellen was a very bad choice. The ratings are all the proof you need.
