Final Fantasy, anyone ???

Aside from the fact that X-2 was the first sequel in the FF series? I don't think it should have been made, in the first place. If Square Enix starts making sequels to their Final Fantasy franchise, it will really bring it down to just another RPG series with no depth. I played it, and it was a major letdown.

@Luminox

If you are having that much trouble, you should consider leveling up some between story areas. ALL my characters usually level 3-4 times between storyline areas, and I never need to use quickenings, as they serve little purpose to me other than MP gain for magic users, or difficult bosses. Never ignore Bravery, Faith, Haste, Float, Protect, and Shell. Also, the 'support storm' is good on long stages, which has each member of your party casting either protectga, shellga, or float.

It's good to make sure your weapons, armors, and magicks are updated whenever shops are updated during the game, too. Good weapons are a real advantage, and it shows. Keep in mind that there are combo rates and disadvantages/advantages to every weapon. Weapon choice is very VERY important:

One-handed swords - only above average power, but allows you to use a shield and has a nice combo rate, although slightly on the slow side; Durandal isn't all that strong, but I consider it the best single handed weapon
Two-handed swords - very strong, and actually faster than most single handed weapons, but you lose evasion with no shield; Tournesol and Excalibur are two of the 4 'super' weapons in the game, both having very high attack
Daggers - fastest weapons with an average combo rate and allows the use of a shield, but has pretty low attack; Danjuro isn't worth getting as it's not very strong and difficult to get, but the Main Gauche is one of the most used weapons in the game, having the highest evasion of any weapon; with a good shield and the Main Gauche, it's near impossible to be hit with physical attacks
Ninja Swords - fast and a high combo rate, but you can't use a shield and they aren't very strong; all ninja swords are shadow elemental, so they are pretty useless in most areas because of the undead; Yagyu Darkblade is a very fast weapon with a high combo rate, but it's still shadow elemental
Katanas - average attack and you can't lose a shield, but high combo rates and are pretty fast; while the Masamune has an average attack, it has a 40% chance to combo (the highest in game), and is one of the 4 'super' weapons in the game
Axes/Hammers - based almost entirely on luck, they can hit extremely high damage or extremely low, and allow the use of shields; the Scorpion Tail isn't worth getting, as it is easily outclasses by other weapons
Spears - strong, fairly quick, average combo rate, you can't go wrong with these; the Zodiac Spear is the strongest weapon in the game and one of the 4 'super' weapons, but the easiest to miss if you don't know how to get it, and chances are you've already screwed up
(long-range weapons and measures don't have combo rates, but have a critical hit %)
Bows - in my opinion, the best long range weapon; fair damage, nice range, average attack rate; the Sagittarius bow is by far the best long-range weapon
Crossbows - not much experience in these other than I think they have longer range than bows, but less attack power and they rarely miss; Gastophetes is just the strongest crossbow, with nothing special
Guns - the SLOWEST weapons and low attack, but ignores defense and is 100% accurate, and not dependant on any stats other than Attack; Fomalhaut is the easiest final weapon to get, and it's not that bad, but still slow
Hand-Bombs - comparable to axes and hammers, being based on luck for damage, but are long ranged and you can't use a shield; Volcano has some good damage, but still random damage
Measures - low attack, average attack speed, and almost no combo rate, but they ignore defense and allow the use of shields; adds positive status effects to the target, which is pointless in attacking monsters, so don't bother with these weapons unless you want quick ways of adding status effects without MP
Poles - they tend to be overlooked, but they have a fairly high attack and attack speed, and have a fair combo rate; all poles are based on the opponent's magic resist rather than defense, and the best weapon against slimes; the Whale Whisker is a pretty strong weapon with a nice combo rate
Maces - good for magic users that aren't constantly casting magic, as it's power is based entirely on your magic stat, and allows the use of a shield, but not very strong; the Grand Mace is only an above average weapon, but still good for magic users
Rods - poor attack, no combos, and fairly slow, but you shouldn't be attacking with these anyways; raises MP and slightly raises magic; the Rod of Faith is a great magic weapon because it adds 35 MP (that's +105 with all 3 quickenings) and +3 magic and if you hit a target with it you might add the 'faith' status
Staves - poor attack and slow like rods, but gives the most to your magic stat and raises elemental damage depending on which staff you equip; the Staff of the Magi adds a whooping +8 to your magic stat, and increases holy elemental damage

TIP: You should get Vaan to at least lvl 10-15 at the beginning of the game solo. When other characters join, they usually take the average level of the party, add 1-3 levels, and that's theirs. Like, when Balthier and Fran first join, if Vaan is level 15, they will be around 17-18. It saves alot of time early on from having to train many people at once.

Another FF Fan here... ..| My favourites are 7, 9, and 10, I love them... 8 was kind of disappointing, some chracters were boring and I didn't like the junction + draw system :( didn't finish it yet...

I'm currently playing 12, I'm in Stilshrine of Miriam, or something like that, it's getting difficult

^ yeah, the Still shrine can be tricky, especially since you meet your first crystal bug there, and you have to keep equipping and unequipping that nethacite piece, so it's bad for one person's MP. Still, you get a nice 'gift' in the shrine, and the boss(s) aren't super hard like some other places.

After you complete this section, it's a great place to go back to to train and get money by chaining the undead in the back area. You just go through the room twice, then backtrack two rooms NOT KILLING ANYTHING, then go back to that room and destroy the undead again. Makes for tons of drops (they drop Ice Brands sometimes, worth a good sum of money), high chains, and fairly high exp.

About the Wyrm Lair challenge/hunt. It was indeed a side quest attatched to it where you have to find a stone that will let you go through the sandstorm unhindered and I got the first part of the stone okay, but when I went back to Rabanaster to ask the two guys who gave me the side quest where the second half of the stone was located they had vanished !! Oh well. Maybe they're in lowtown and I'll go check there.

They should be near the exit of the town where the original Lizard Bangaa was that asked you to help him in the first place. All three of them talk and then you get the other piece of the WINDVAYNE.

Sorry, if it's already been answered.

Part of what makes any FF great is the soundtrack. I LOVED FF7 and 8. I wanted to BE squall. I even bought clothes like his :( I am so not cool, even though my clothes are sick-hot.

And now I'm stuck !oops! I beat a boss and rotated the statues up, but it seems that's not the right side... the monsters are ANNOYING! :grrr:

What I like most about 12 is that there appears to be a lot more side quests and optional fights and bosses than in the previous FF games, with perhaps 7 and 8 being the only ones I have found to have more 'bonus' content than the older and newer releases. Some people get annoyed by bonus quests and add on adventures but I love them. They add much more depth to the characters and the world, not to mention added shelf life to the game and also gives you the option to get more powerful weapons, armour and magic upgrades.

You are forgetting FF9. Some people call it Final Fantasy: Side Quest.

Still, with almost every Final Fantasy ever released, at least 1/3 of the game is made up of bonuses, optional bosses, easter eggs, and side quests.

I've never played 9 that much even though I bought it upon the release date like any other avid fan of the series, but to be honest the story did not grip me and pull me in like 7 or 8 did and so I have yet to finish getting passed the halfway mark with it. But as for 9 being called FF Side Quest I would have to agree with you there. There seemed to be no clearly defined story arch and the whole thing played like a bunch of scenarios stringed together by big action sequences.
I agree as well that FF games are best known for being one of the few RPG series that actually take the time to add lots of side quests, additional characters and special armours and add ons that make the game bigger and better than the rest in the same type of genre. If anything, if you want an RPG with lots of replay value and good stories and characters, the FF series has it in spades most of the time IMO.

Pushover : Hm, you seem to be quite the expert here ! Thanks for the advice...although now I'm in a better position, cos all of those unending battles at least gave me LOADS of loot . I bought better weapons and armor and a few spells too...most of my characters have weapons and/or armorings that give an added advantage like Ashe has (I don't remember the name but it's a strong Fire sword), Penelo has Windbreaker, Basch has Ice Shield etc...Oh, by the way...I made all the trouble spending tons of money to get Fran to learn Vanishga and...umm...what's the use of it ? I mean, it makes my party invisible but that doesn't change anything ! The monsters still see us and come for us !

Metatron : Yeah, the Stillshrine of Myriam is a real BITCH ! Took me ages to complete it...the monsters there seem to have a much faster respawning rate...whenever I exit a room to go heal, byt the time I come back they're usually there again . And with all those statues coming to life it's really annoying to say the least.

I think I know where you are. Did you just beat a boss (a weak one, with a really weird name ) somewhere on the east side ? If you're where I think you are, you need to travel the whole SHrine and point the 3 statues (situated East, West and South) to the centre of the Shrine, where that huge statue with the sword is. So the East statue needs to look west, the West one east and the Southern one North. You can see on your map if they're looking in the right direction. Oh, and when you do that and the path in the South gets unlocked, please remember to save . You've got an Esper fight coming up, and she's tougher than Belias .

Yeah, I beat that boss but the path was still closed... I have to go through the Balloons again

Thank you for the tips!! :D

First off, a fun fact you might not know: the esper Mateus is not female. Mateus is the serpent/fish that took hold of an ice maiden to use as a living shield when the Gods came after him.

Second, there's a trick to monsters in an area or room. If you move two areas away from that area, any monsters you've defeated will come back. Usually they spawn 1-3 times for each monster before they are gone, but if you leave the area/room and come back, the respawn counter will be reset.

Lastly, yes I am an expert on FF. I used to work with a website that catalogued the Final Fantasy series, and I was one of the internet researchers on crossovers and real world influences. Unfortunately the guy that hosted the website left, and the server went kablooie. Still, www.ffcomendium.com is the best site on the net if you wanted to know anything about Final Fantasy.

^ Thanks again ! (For the 1,000th time !) ;-)

Oh, so the cool mermaid or whtever I though was Mateus is only the decoration ?? Too bad ! The rest...well, I'll have to have a closer look sometime...cos I didn't really manage to identify any kind of head or something that suggests that blob around her is a living thing !

And...congrats to moi ! I finally, FINALLY managed to beat the Ring Wyrm !!! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSA ! It was an awful, nasty fight and a motherf*cking long one. Took at least an hour if not 75 minutes...But I did it ! Although I don't think anyone with i) a weak heart, ii) weak nerves like mine, iii) high blood pressure, iv) with a party below level 27-28 or v) without Bubble should try it !

During that tedious and utterly unnerving fight I broke my own record. I unleashed my mightiest Quickening chain, consisting of 24 (yes, 24 !!!! I didn't even think that was actually possible !) hits, and took away a huge slice of the Wyrms HP, namely 44,000 !!! Told you I have sheer dumb luck often, right ?

Unfortunately now there are no level 3 marks left. I dare not even think how powerful level 4 marks could be ... !!!

One more thing Pushover : in X I didn't quite get the ending. Why exactly DID Sin die after all ???

12-mateus.jpg

Mateus, the black fish-like being encased around the maiden. Yes, it looks weird, but most Espers do in FF12.

Rather than type out a bunch of stuff (FF10 is a rather complex story), here's a link to the FF Compendium that explains the entire storyline of 10:
http://www.ffcompendium.com/h/ff10story.shtml

Bubble? Yes, that spell becomes one of the 10 most important spells you have (Bubble, Hastega, Curaja, Arise, Reverse, Syphon, Shock, Scourge, Bravery, and Faith), although most tend to rely on the Bubble Belt accessory, which adds permenant bubble status. But, that takes up your accessory slot, so you can't use awesome equips like the Genji Gloves (greatly improves your combo hit rate), Ribbon (Immunity to almost all status effects, duh), the Sage Ring (halves all MP consumption), and the Cat-Ear Hood (+20 vitality, and +50 speed).

Really ? I've never used Haste so far ! I did use Faith with the Ring Wyrm though...

I think I should concentrate on learning Green/Arcane magicks to induce positive status changes on my characters...Cos all of the strong monsters/bosses are immune to ailments like Sap, Sleep, Poison etc. So UNNERVING ! Why do they even bother putting the spells in the game ? All the monsters they're actually worth using on are immune, and the ones that aren't are usually easy enough to kill otherwise ! :-0

Awesome picture by the way ! I still don't see Mateus though ! It just looks as if she has a spare set of hands. Where is its head or face ?? Hihihi...

Bravery raises physical attack damage by 30%. With a strong weapon like the Ultima Sword or the Zodiac Spear, that can add somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 damage. Faith adds 30-50% damage to magic attacks, which can mean using spells like Flare, Holy, Ardor, and Scathe can easily reach the 9,999 mark. All my fighting characters have the Self: Bravery gambit on them, and my magic characters have the Self: Faith gambit.

Worried about status effects? There's a realllly helpful trick that involves a not-often used accessory; the Nihopalaoa. This accessory reverses the effect of all recovery items, ie potions damage instead of heal, pheonix down sometimes causes an instant death attack, etc. Now, imagine usng this accessory and using a remedy on a hard monster. Yeah, instead of curing the statuses (if you have all 3 remedy lore licences) you will inflict Slow, Blind, Silence, Poison, Sleep, Sap, Don't Move, Don't Act, Petrify, Confuse, Oil, Stop, Death Sentence, and Virus on a single target. Many bosses are immune to several status effects, and the harder ones are immune to almost, if not all, status effect, but this trick can let you know what they are immune to by inflicting all negative status effects at once.

Yeah, Mateus is odd-looking, but so are most of the espers in the game (look at Zodiark, Shemhazai, and Famfrit). Still, look in your Clan Primer under Mateus' name and you'll see the background information:

""Scion of darkness ruling and protecting those who live in the underworld, in opposition to Lahabrea the Abyssal Celebrant and scion of light. In the course of his rule, he submitted to avarice, and the darkness took his heart, transforming him until he was both evil and corrupt. Then in his cowardice did he bind a Goddess of the Demesne of Ice, and using her as a living shield, he challenged the gods. Defeated before their might, he fell screaming into the depths of hell, there to be imprisoned for eternity."

There you go. Mateus is a HE, and is indeed the fish-like being behind the ice maiden.

Yeah, I figured Mateus was male, because Mateus is a common male name here... Now I have to fight a judge, even tougher than Mateus ](*,)
