Although I'm sure many scintillating ideas come to mind, I actually prefer serious answers to this question. :D

The idea for this topic came to mind in another thread, where someone had occasion to post a picture of a car, a Bentley I believe, which apparently retails at $275,000.

I've remarked before to friends, and still maintain, that I can't understand why someone would spend that much money on a vehicle. Maybe some of the folks who buy expensive vehicles do so simply because they can, or for the perceived status imparted by being seen in one. But in my mind, even if I had the means, I could never justify spending that much money on something you can't live in.

I have to believe, however, that there must be some people out there who don't necessarily care about status, and can't easily afford such a car, but who are determined to acquire one, because they see some kind of art in it, something so valuable in intangible qualities that the asking price is almost irrelevant.

I realized that I actually understand that. There are things and experiences I'll spend money on, even if it strains my budget, because having access to those things and experiences is, to me, worth the expense.

For example, it's much more expensive for me to shop at co-op markets for my groceries than it would be to shop at one of the big chains. But I believe so strongly in supporting "the little guy", as well as promoting sustainable living, organic/alternative farming and products, local growers, social change et cetera, that I'll do so.

There are other examples in my life as well, but I'm interested in what other people are willing to spend money on, an amount of money undefined except by the fact that others might not understand how the value is commensurate with the purchase price.

Will you spend $20 on expensive cheese, even though your grocery budget for the week is only $50?

Will you take public transit for a month instead of paying for gas so you can afford the tickets to a particular concert?

What is it for you?

Not much, really. I'm a cheap son-of-a-bitch.

Give me Seagrams over Jack any day of the week.

Toilet paper. The cheap stuff hurts.

Haha! Surprisingly enough, you aren't the only person I've known for whom the quality of their toilet paper is very important. On the other hand, it's not something to which I've ever given much thought, for myself. To me, toilet paper is toilet paper. Must've been all those years of backpacking and camping in college, where you learn that anything that won't give you a rash or doesn't need to be used later can serve as toilet paper. :-p

Profligate waste - the money could be used for other more beneficial purposes. And they aren't even that good a car. Their repair records suck...

Well see, that's what I tend to think also. But maybe to someone, there's a discourse going on in the design of that car that's as compelling as a Picasso. I might not see what they see, but the thought that they see it kind of makes me slow my judgment.

Like the Ferrari, or some other whoop-de-do sports car . . . I've heard some people, people who love cars, "wax poetical" about the experience of driving one. I didn't really understand or relate, but I could see from the way they talked about it that it was worth the expense.

Why spend a huge amount on Grey Goose Vodka when Popov will do the job.

@Kevbo also: Now I know for sure there are some folks out there who'd  to "hear" y'all talk like that. Not that I'm challenging your choice at all, it just tickles me thinking of the folks I know from culinary circles who judge a fine dining establishment on the kind of booze they serve.

I never over indulge. I feel like an ass if I spend too much money. I HATE shopping and I hate malls. I am happiest when I am giving a loved one something that they need. I could go a whole month without just for that.

That said, my indulge-vice is to travel.

Ah yes. Travel. To my mind, an understandable luxury. But does overindulgence include this, or are you willing to strain your budget for a trip?

For NOM to close down forever and its leaders to pick up real jobs.

What is NOM?

Computers/electronics.

I drive a Saturn. I wear clothes from Target. I have one name brand handbag and it's a fake.

But my computers and electronics are high end. Sadly.

Edit: I realized that I tend to spend a great deal of money on the various kids in my life. Nieces, goddaughter. I love spoiling kids.

So, are we talking several grand for a laptop, or what? Like, gimme a ballpark of what "high end" is in electronics. I'm kind of a technophobe, so have no idea how much one could potentially spend, and what the difference is between one thing and another.

Apple iMac (desktop) computer purchased November 2009 $1600

Apple MacBookPro purchased November 2008 $1800

50" HDTV LCD Television purchased 5 years ago $1300

Just to give you an idea !oops!

Well now, that doesn't seem so bad! Here I expected you to reply with, "It cost me $50,000 to equip my home office."

Plus, you're a writer and you do a lot of freelance, yeah?

i'd drop $$ to see diana krall live in concert.

Personally ... I HATE Money!! But ... also wish I had enough of it that I could afford a Bentley! I think they're absolutely GORGEOUS! (Average "value" of Bentley owners ... $5 mil. #-o )

I HATE Money for what it does (or doesn't do) to People in general! And, I REFUSE, to the best of my ability, to let Money have any "Control" over what I do! (Unfortunately, it has a LOT to do with what I Can't Do! ](*,) )

Through my years, I've known many Very Wealthy, and even Famous, people. (Some of them are in my own family.) However, I've also noted that Wealth does not, necessarily, equate to Happiness! MONEY can have some Very Corrosive, unexpected, effects! )

There are things that I Value far beyond their "Monetary" numbers! That doesn't mean I am at all "Impractical"! It just simply means that when I consider something to be "Valuable", I will not hesitate, IF I have the "Means", to "splurge" in order to make something "Happen"! ..|

And, it's not usually something for Myself! It's, usually, an effort to Help, or Promote, something for someone else! (I could care less about Me!) :slap:

Would I LIKE a Bentley? Hell, YES! Will I ever own one? Hell, No! I can think of far better uses for the Cash! (IF I had it!) #-o

In short ... to the Best of my Ability ... I absolutely REFUSE to let Money have control over my LIFE!! (group)

Which is one of the reasons, that I've been know to say, no matter what ...

Keep smilin'!! (*8*)

Currently, I'm spending quite a bit of money on my education.

Even though I'm on a very tight budget, I'd rather spend a few more dollars on good food than save on something I don't really want or like. I feel the same about most things. Really, I hardly spend any money (except on school), but will occasionally splurge on an item of clothing or a book. I suppose I also splurge on lattes a few times a week, but I always use the time to study, as well.

At this point, nothing.

I've been lucky to have had a point in my life where I could have the posh apartment in the city, the 6-figure car, the vacations.

Now, I enjoy the simple things after learning all that other stuff doesn't matter.

You know, if I'd thought I actually had a chance at a ticket, I'd have sold everything I owned to make it to London for the Led Zeppelin reunion concert at the O2 Arena a couple of years back.

My only indulgences are my JUB membership, my education - I mean come on a degree in History & Politics I'm not going to get until I'm 43 isn't going to be much use anywhere - and going to the movies & theatre

I did forget to mention I am spending a great deal of money on my 2nd round of education, this time for a whole new course of study.

So, I guess I'm wiling to spend whatever it takes to get the career I should have had 20 years ago ;)

I relate to both of these perspectives. I'm pretty much in the same place. And, I guess that illuminates another something I think is worthwhile in and of itself: education. I'd go to school for one thing or another all my life if it was feasible, and feel it completely justifiable.

I relate to these, also. Books, good food, and organic free-trade coffee beans are a larger portion of my expenditures each month than I could justify to someone to whom those things are uninspiring.

Loved your long post, Chaz. (*8*) And that's pretty much the point, yeah? For everyone, even people who'll spend a lot of money on one thing or another, it's not the money that's important.

To build a home, that's what I'm doing my education for. Want my own house that I can design and plan and then do all the decor!

I absolutely love animals I wouldn't mind crapping out all the money in the world to expand my future house to include: a fish aquarium room with enough tanks to collectively hold 1000 gallons of water, an African Grey parrot with all the accessories it needs ($5K +), a cat with whatever it needs, and so on... I dream to be a vet before I get them so that I can take proper care of them....

Exotic plants or a good education abroad...can't decide #-o...well, let's just make it down to my health, which is the most important.
