Although I'm sure many scintillating ideas come to mind, I actually prefer serious answers to this question.
The idea for this topic came to mind in another thread, where someone had occasion to post a picture of a car, a Bentley I believe, which apparently retails at $275,000.
I've remarked before to friends, and still maintain, that I can't understand why someone would spend that much money on a vehicle. Maybe some of the folks who buy expensive vehicles do so simply because they can, or for the perceived status imparted by being seen in one. But in my mind, even if I had the means, I could never justify spending that much money on something you can't live in.
I have to believe, however, that there must be some people out there who don't necessarily care about status, and can't easily afford such a car, but who are determined to acquire one, because they see some kind of art in it, something so valuable in intangible qualities that the asking price is almost irrelevant.
I realized that I actually understand that. There are things and experiences I'll spend money on, even if it strains my budget, because having access to those things and experiences is, to me, worth the expense.
For example, it's much more expensive for me to shop at co-op markets for my groceries than it would be to shop at one of the big chains. But I believe so strongly in supporting "the little guy", as well as promoting sustainable living, organic/alternative farming and products, local growers, social change et cetera, that I'll do so.
There are other examples in my life as well, but I'm interested in what other people are willing to spend money on, an amount of money undefined except by the fact that others might not understand how the value is commensurate with the purchase price.
Will you spend $20 on expensive cheese, even though your grocery budget for the week is only $50?
Will you take public transit for a month instead of paying for gas so you can afford the tickets to a particular concert?
What is it for you?
