I don't buy the "slippery slope" argument the Right loves to apply to any cause they're against (dog marriage anyone?). I believe people are actually rational and saying "you can't verbally abuse people at a funeral" will NOT lead to "you are not allowed to speak against the Dear Leader"...

Free speech should not be an excuse for abuse.

I just gave you a good example with Canadian gun laws. In this case, I based common sense on logic.

Canadian law prohibits the ownership of handguns, except under strictly-regulated circumstances, because people use handguns to kill people.

By contrast, Canadians can own rifles, because people own rifles--which you can load only one bullet at a time--to hunt with. You certainly couldn't use one to commit the aforementioned schoolhouse tragedy.

What could be more logical?

Australia has similar gun control laws to Canada. I always wondered where the Australian Government at the time got the outline for the legislation given it was brought in so quickly.

They also call themselves Christians, but the WBC doesn't behave in a very Christian or Democratic manner, now do they? I'm sure 99% of Christians or Democrats don't go around trolling funerals, claiming children's deaths as "God's Will", or make YouTube videos gleefully proclaiming that everyone but them are going to Hell.

Here's the problem I have with this line of reasoning. You're asking us to turn a blind eye to a terrible injustice.

We're not talking about the Phelps' political views. I have the ability to ignore their silly ideas about God hating Fags, etc.

Instead, we're talking about the fact that they're demonstrating at the funerals of dead children, laughing, mocking, saying,"haha, your kid deserved it because America tolerates faggotry."

That's messed up, Figjam, and when you tell us to "just ignore it", you also try to silence the voice of compassion.

I won't do it, and nobody else with a heart would stay silent, either.

I know and understand all this - thing is - there will always be people like this. You can work yourself into a fenzy if you prefer.. fact is.. there will always be idiots around. Fred and his clan is just not worth the effort - they represent less than 0.00009% of people around...

I would assume it is hard for the people at the funerals that are grieving to ignore them. Another problem is the media, they'd never not report on people like them.

Perhaps, but how many thousands and thousands of lives have they disrupted with their hatred? If they picket these children, how many families are they mocking with their hatred? Funerals are solemn events and the Phelps clan can't even pay respect to the mourners. I hope the townspeople get together and run them out of town on a rail.

Hate speech is NOT freedom of speech.

Besides, contrary to what many Americans think, you do not have freedom of speech. You cannot yell "fire" in a crowded theatre. You cannot use racial slurs to discribe a co worker. You cannot comment on certian body parts of a total stranger. How does yelling hateful riligious bile at funerals constitute freedom of speech? Here that'll get you whacked to a pulp. If that is sensorship, bring it on!
