Now what I find interesting is that no one has decided to participate by supporting Sarko. I am certainly not going to be the first as I value my status as a polite, reasonably well liked member of JUB.![]()
Yet may I reinforce the fact that we have only been hearing from people who dislike him, fear his effects and think him a megolomaniac; whilst there are those in France who believe strongly that he is exactly the sort of President required to sort out the mess we are in.

So much hate and bigotry. I find it somewhat comical they are exactly the types of things gay men are always preaching against about but both are exhibited to great lengths in this thread. I guess I am the only one to see that "acceptance" and "tolerance" are two way streets?
Yes, I am an outsider and I have never been to France but here's my take on it, anyway: the French wanted change, just like the Canadians wanted change when they threw their corrupt liberal party out of power, just like Americans supposedly wanted change in November, 2006. Apparently, the French are just like most human beings and can only take so much rioting by "youths" and government interference in their everyday lives. I am guessing Sarko said what many Frenchmen were saying behind closed doors when he called the rioting "youth" scum.
I am all but positive Sarko was elected in large part because of his stance on immigration/immigrant assimilation. It seems he connected with many people. The rioting, burning of cars and assaults on police and EMTs shocked many in France and made people realize how far away France was to its ideals, how French culture was being torn to pieces by new immigrants. I believe the French spoke loud and clear by electing Sarko.
To further this discussion, if I may, I would like to point out that the left in Europe has been losing ground in the past few years while the right has been gaining ground. Even in some European countries, the extreme far-right has been winning seats in parliaments and local elections. One has to wonder if the left has finally gone too far in its drive to create a utopia on the continent. People are becoming disenchanted with ever higher taxes, more laws, forced multiculturalism and rampant immigration. The proof is in the pudding.
James1200: I do not know if you're comment on page 1 was sarcastic or not but I would give the Islamists more than 5 years. In the end however, there is a better chance of it happening than not. Simple demographics.
