Gay men: what is your religion?

I am a Christian...So it took this thread to get the rest of you Christians out of hiding? I thought there was maybe 3 of us here...

I endured 12 years of Catholic School. I would consider myself agnostic/spiritual.

Atheist/agnostic/apathetic, what have you. I strongly distrust organized religion as a whole and don't feel the need to bolster myself with some sort of "faith".

I would disagree with you. Faith and strong belief in God is important to me.

I think a lot of gays turn away from religion because of their experiences with homophobia and religious bigotry towards gays.

Don't let some misguided followers turn you away from God. God loves gay people as they are.

I didn't ask for your agreement, and I was only speaking for myself. I have many reasons for disagreeing with organized religion, and none have to do with any sort of bad personal experiences. So keep your preaching to yourself.

That argument opnly works for those who were inducted into some form of specific religious organisation in the first place, which only has relevance for certain individuals of certain households in certain cultures where specific religious presumptions and ideologies are pervasive.

I consider myself unbelievably fortunate to have been raised where I was: in a household where no particular religious ideology or presumptions held sway, where I was provided with access to any number of such ideologies (Biblical, Nordic, Ancient Greek, Egyptian, Islamic) via the books and stories they derive from, not to mention works of philosophy, science, fiction of all kinds. As a result of those early and continued exposures, I've always regarded proscribed, traditional mythologies (e.g. the Biblical and Koranic tales) as exactly that; interesting, ancient, sometimes enlightened, often vile, always entertaining structures of storytelling. I have equal respect for the biblical tales as I do those of Ancient Greek or Celtic myth, and regard them as sacred in the sense that they are examples of humanity attempting to define place, poetry and meaning via the medium of imagination and story-telling.

I only take issue with those who proclaim them literal and universally applicable.

Catholic, although not very practising!oops!

Picture it:
An agnostic person is in a very dangerous situation, he/she may not survive it.
What do you think he/she will say?

"Please God, don't let me die".

Having been close to death's door once or twice, as an atheist, I can quite happily tell you: fuck yourself and the weak, watery, tribal garbage you evidently call "faith." I've met people who I consider to have genuine faith in a notion of the divine; they comport themselves as if they do: having a certain spiritual quiescence about them, rather than this sort of idiot petulance. This is exactly the sort of nonsense that informs me quite clearly when those who purport some connection with or to speak on behalf of the divine have simply made a god of their own pathetic insecurities.

I think "free thinker" is a good term for most people.

I tend to disagree with you? I tend to think that using the term 'Free-thinker' for non-religious people / atheïsts / agnosts etc. implies that religious people must be called 'not a free-thinker' (or something like that).

I also often describe myself as a Free thinker, but I am also often using the term 'I don't have a religion'.

On the other hand, I like some of the habits of the muslim religion:
(1) dogs are 'haram' (meaning dirty / filthy animals and no way people can have a dog as a pet)
(2) i don't need to give lengthy explanations to muslims that I don't drink alcohol, and muslims also realize themself that socializing with people can also be very relaxed withhout using alcohol.

Best wishes.

Born to an LDS Family (Mormon to those that don't know what LDS means)..My mom taught Primary (church lessons during the weekdays for kids)..
I plyaed piano for the Priesthood meetings (when I was 13-17 years old) Piresthood was for male only... young men and older guys..
So I was raised a Mormon.. But often I was the only one in my family that went to church..
But I quit when I was 18.
I still believe it much of it though.
So I still figure Im Mormon.

Some folks don't consider Mormons as Christian.. witness the rececnt talks about the Republican Presidential contenders.. Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman.. both Mormans..
Anyway.. that does't matter to me... I know that Mormons are Christians..
And holy cow mate... I"d made a few threads on this topic too..
I'm not ready to debate theology.. I suspect you'd beat me in any debate..
But yes, I"m a gay guy that is a Christian.
tonyboy :D

I was born and raised as a Buddhist, but now I'm a Taoist.

I guess I can relate in some degree. In Malaysia/Singapore, Buddhism and tao are somehow mixed. Is very confusing sometimes. I think I'm a typical Chinese Malaysian.

Born and Baptised Catholic. Saw the error of my ways listening to John Apaul the Pig and now Ratzi the Nazi. I am a happy atheist.

The Media, Ignorant Pastors, Ignorant Voters(in all parties) and Pretty Mitty's opponents ATTACKING his "Faith" is low down & dirty. Yes it's Politics as usual and it's sickening...Attacking a Man's "Faith" is just as bad as attacking a Man's "racial make-up".

Isnt it comical when you think about it?...We have such a LONG & RICH History vetting Presidential Candidates...Past Presidents OWNED Slaves before & after they won office while relishing our Country's "Freedom" as if they knew what it fucking meant. So I don't see why a successful Business Owner & Former Governor with an upstanding family shouldnt be PROUD of his "Faith" and speak of it PROUDLY while he campaigns...

Men are my religion!

You know how it goes; I once was lost, but now am found. Was blind but now I see....

I grew up Christian, but ditched that long ago and am Atheist all the way.

Methodist minister's son, here. And, the first male, in several generations of my family's branch, that did not go into the clergy. Great-grandparents were Quaker ministers, as were my grandparents, and one of my uncles. The Methodists crept in when my aunt "Dot" (Dorothy) 'converted' my Uncle Paul, and then they 'worked' on my Dad.

Here's what I meant to post, in it's entirety, before I hit the wrong button ...

Methodist minister's son, here. And, the first male, in several generations of my family's branch, that did not go into the clergy. Great-grandparents were Quaker ministers, as were my grandparents, and one of my uncles. The Methodists crept in when my aunt "Dot" (Dorothy) 'converted' my Uncle Paul, and then they 'worked' on my Dad, the 'baby' of his family.

My cousins, on Dad's side, are all ministers (or married to them), too! #-o

SO ... I was raised on the 'back side' of the alter. Was encouraged to study ALL religions. I remember one time, when we went on a two week vacation, that Dad had the local rabbi, and monsignor, deliver the sermon at our church in his absence. ..|

ALSO, much later, when one of Dad's associate pastors came out to him as gay, he 'upped' his efforts to get the Methodist Church to ordain gay ministers. That hasn't happened, yet, but at least it's in the plodding works. :D

SO ... am I "religious"? NO! When I went off to college, purposefully, 500 mi. away from my family's Public, I ceased going to church! I'd had enough of it all, the politics, the funding issues, the hypocrisy of "Christians", for nearly 18 yr. of my life! In spite of my family's efforts to make things better, seemingly an upstream battle, I just didn't care to cope with "organized religion" anymore! #-o

However, I am Spiritual! I do believe in a "Higher Power". I do believe that each, and every one, of US are a part of God! I believe that WE are shepherds of, and are responsible for, through Science, the well being of Our planet. I believe that WE have an overall "Higher" calling. I believe we can all be better citizens of our home world. I believe in the "Golden Rule". (group)

And, of course ... no matter what ... the importance of ...

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)

This is what happens when you don't think for yourself.

When I tried to kill myself, my first and only thought was of my mother - you know, someone that actually exists.

Try again kid.
