Music2400, I can't help but notice that instead of arguing with my position, you are arguing with some bullshit "art" debate that you've put in my mouth. I am sorry, however did I give you the impression that any of this was about art? No, it's about money, who gives it, who gets it and where does it end. Whether the movie or the story behind it is the best thing ever in the history of everything, or a pathetic hack bullshit, is utterly irrelevant here.

And do reading-comprehend better please - the "guilt-tripping" was about the studio response, not you.
 
I haven't really "argued" anything, be it your position, or an art debate. I've simply shared my opinions on why this boycott seems childish and pointless to me. The closest I've gotten to arguing is simply try to provide you with an alternate perspective which may let you see what I see. Shame on me.

Maybe practice a little reading comprehension yourself.

Where do you stand? And are you going to watch Ender's Game?

Meanwhile, back on planet Earth, this boycott i nowhere near childish or pointless. Whether it's successful or not, the mainstream media picked it up. It started a debate about how far can artists go with their personal opinions and still expect us to judge their work simply on its merits. And even more importantly, it showcases the fact that the media and the general population are beginning to view homophobia no longer as an "opinion", but a legitimate bigotry, en par with racism. We aren't there yet, but initiatives like this one - showing that no, we will not just lie down and make idiotic excuses for why it's ok, and not raise a fuss so as not to make people dislike us - are what drives the public opinion.
 
I think the most annoying thing about the boycott is people are actually defending Card now and even going to see the movie as an act of solidarity.

It's a shame because I agree people shouldn't see it, especially just to "show those gay people who's boss" but I guess this is just one more of those examples where when you count on the majority for good morality you're always left wanting

Well, this is all well and good and utopian... except for the myriad of homophobes who are now threatening to go to see it specifically because the queers are up in arms.

Only time will tell, of course, as to whether or not this is successful. But I guess it's true what they say - apparently there is no such thing as bad publicity.

We are not such a small minority. In fact, nobody knows how big we are because so many of us are closeted and in denial. But many of those will also support the boycott. And many straight allies will too.
 
I hope so. I'm unconvinced.

I rather feel like this is like God and the devil playing chess with humankind each trying to influence the other. Everyone's waiting for people true nature to reveal itself naturally, either kind or cruel when it comes to this issue

I'm sorry, but as long as 4 out of 5 gay men are closeted or in total denial, ANY data on the subject is not simply suspect, but pure speculation. You are free to believe what you will, but calling people who believe otherwise "delusional or willfully ignorant" is laughable, when there is no credible data to base an opinion on.
 
Well, the obvious question which pops up immediately is whether your 4 out of 5 is a real number, pure speculation, or simply a thumbsuck.

I mean, if they're that deeply closeted or in denial, how would anyone know the proportion?

The bf is a huge Ender's Game fan, it's probably his favourite book (and I enjoyed it as well), but we're likely not going to see this one in theatres or buy the DVDs. I know several of my straight friends are also hesitant to see the movie because of Orson Scott Card's policies and behaviour...

Don't watch the movie, the writer of the book is extremely homophobic and against gay rights and will probably donate money he makes from the movie to organizations against gay rights. Not sure how many people are aware of this but hopefully people who want to see it will have enough self respect to not watch it in the theaters where the movie will be making most of its money. If you must watch it, hopefully you wait until Redbox or Netflix or for it to come out on TV which is still supporting it but much less than watching it at the theaters. If your friends want to go see it with you, hopefully you tell them you would rather watch one of the other movies (Thor, Gravity, Carrie, Bad Grandpa, Hunger Games 2...Anything!) or you don't feel like watching a movie and persuade them to do something else instead. Movies are really expensive after all.

I know some people will get mad at me for posting this thread because they don't give a fuck just like all the gay people who still continued to eat at Chick-Fil-A even after they found out the money was being used to fund anti-gay organizations. To you, I shake my head. I'm sure the movie will make a lot of money since people can't wait to see Hunger Games 2 coming out at the end of November so they'll think "Oh Ender's Game, maybe it's similar, I'll check it out" but every dollar counts, your $10 counts, you and your date's $20 counts, you and your group of friend's $50 counts (It's just $1 if you all wait to watch it on Redbox together). It's even more than $10 each if you watch it in 3D and It all adds up to millions.

I didn't put this in the entertainment section because it has to do with the fight for our rights and the issue of homophobia.
