Re: (WARNING) Ender's Game Supports Homophobia & Goes Against Our Rights

So you tell us not to watch the movie, THEN tell us that "it doesn't matter, we don't care anyway".

You need to work on your speech skills, random person, just like the last guy needs to work on his.

And, for the record, I wasn't going to watch the movie - not because the guy is a homophobe like Chik-Fil-A is a restaurant based upon the institution of hardlined and archaic christian beliefs, but because it's a sci-fi movie and 90% of them don't interest me.

Now, I am still waiting for my cupcakes. Get on that, and we'll talk.

Another reason not to see it is that from the previews, it looks like they didn't do that great a job.

Re: (WARNING) Ender's Game Supports Homophobia & Goes Against Our Rights

You know what's funny? He's already got his money out of the deal. The film company bought the rights to make the movie, Card's already been paid. Boycotting the movie only really hurts the production company and cast/crew (more than a few of whom are actually gay friendly). As for the story, I don't think there are any homophobic themes in it.

By all means, if you aren't interested in the film don't see it. You'll allow those who are interested in it a better chance to enjoy it. But if your only reason for boycotting the film is that the writer of the novel is homophobic..... OSC will neither care nor be affected. But great job slapping people in the face who until now had nothing against you.

I'll probably see it solely for the performances of Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley. Doesn't hurt that Moises Arias is in it too.

Re: (WARNING) Ender's Game Supports Homophobia & Goes Against Our Rights

I usually show up at the theatre for sci fi movies and I won't show up for this one based solely on Card. I don't care what anyone else does. I don't need to agree with anyone else's decision nor do I care if anyone agrees with mine.

I can't find anything verifying that. Got a link?

Re: (WARNING) Ender's Game Supports Homophobia & Goes Against Our Rights

Since Ender's Game was published in 1985, author Orson Scott Card had always been protective of the film rights and artistic control. Card explained that he had many opportunities through the 1980s and 1990s to sell the rights of Ender's Game to Hollywood studios, but refused when creative differences became an issue.[18] With the formation of Fresco Pictures in 1996 (which Card co-founded), the author decided to write the screenplay himself.[19]

So he COULD have sold it for money a long time ago.

On January 28, 2011, it was reported that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would be producing the work and would begin presenting the script to prospective investors.[25]

So in reality Card loses nothing by the film failing. The already paid him handsome sums which is why they raise money for the film.

On April 28, 2011, it was announced that Summit Entertainment picked up the film's distribution[26] and Digital Domain joined Odd Lot Entertainment in a co-production role.[27] Gavin Hood joined as director, using Hood's script adaptation,[22][23] and Donald McAlpine joined as cinematographer.[28] The Producers include creative producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman of K/O Paper Products, producers Gigi Pritzker and Linda McDonough of Odd Lot Entertainment, and producer John Textor of Digital Domain[29][30] Executive producers include David Coatsworth, Bill Lischak, Cliff Plumer and Ed Ulbrich.[29] The film is also being produced by Lynn Hendee of Chartoff Productions, who has worked with Card on the development of the film for over 15 years,[31] and Robert Chartoff.[6][32] In an interview with Brigham Young University newspaper The Universe, Card said that his role as co-producer was in the early stages and that the screenplay is 100% Hood's.[31]

So then is his statement about the screenplay being Hood's 100% accurate or an attempt to separate his ignorant views from the film?

Meh, I like sci fi... depending on the reviews or probably in spite of them, I will stream it for free when it become available. Still i pay for the stream so .... if you have amazon prime, Hulu, Vudu, Netflicks or any of the other ones then you are in part supporting a ton of views you may deplore. Boycotts of films are like boycotting gas brands. It only hurts the station and not the petrol company. The petrol company simply repackages it and sells it else where, the store owners go out of business.

Same thing here. If you think your making a impact on Card's life then your mistaken. However, if it makes ya feel fuzzy, have fun.

The fact that the film was made is proof. No film co is going to drop money into producing a film they haven't already purchased the rights to. They ain't gonna drop hundreds of MILLIONS of dollars into creating something and leave a giant opening for someone to take the returns.

But selling the rights can include keeping a portion of the cut. Frak, actors' contracts sometimes include getting a portion of the profits!

You're talking about royalties. If the whole of the gay population were indeed to boycott the film the loss in funds wouldn't matter much when you break it down to royalty level. Most actors' contracts include a percentage of gross box office dollars and even potential merchandising (action figures and other collectables).

It would be like withholding a glass of water from someone who already has a full 5,000 gallon reservoir all to himself.... He wont even notice.

So if he's getting, say, 4%, and the film makes a few tens of millions, Card would get a few hundred thousand.

I think I'd probably put that much to better use than he ever will.

Maybe, maybe not.

Orson Scott Card is a producer of the film. He will make money based on boxed office earnings. He'll also make more money from the increase in book sales, resulting from the movie.

Ender's Game is one of my favorite books, but Orson Scott Card is a bigot and I feel conflicted about that. My friends and I won't be paying to see the movie.

And that is your right. But the less than 1/2 a cent he loses from your lack of patronage wont even cause him to raise an eyebrow. On the other hand there are many who see such behavior as negative especially when the book and subsequent film are not homophobic in nature. To many it seems quite nitpicking and paints the gay community in a negative light.

This is why I have to wonder if this is maybe a prime example of the old adage about the cure being worse than the disease in that it is more harmful to the LGBT community than it is beneficial.

I've pondered that side of it, too. What makes my mind up is that I'd rather not spend the amount of money I would in a theater when I'm expecting to be a bit disappointed.

Re: (WARNING) Ender's Game Supports Homophobia & Goes Against Our Rights

Ah, but that is not so much boycotting as it is deciding not to go based on entertainment value. If you feel you'll be disappointed in the film you have every right to choose not to see it.

but if this movie is a box office flop, Hollywood won't give him even more money for the rights to the next books in the series (and as the books progress, his anti-gay agenda gets more and more obvious. by the "Ender's Shadow" book, the plot is basically all about how great it is to make babies; there's one gay character who's only introduced to lament about how he can never be happy in life because he can't have his own biological children, and as a result his life is forever meaningless -- though by the end, he's converted to straight and is much happier)

What character in any of the Ender series is allegedly gay???

not allegedly, there's a straight-up gay character... it's been over a decade since I've read the book, so I can't recall the name, but there was a homosexual doctor in Ender's Shadow. he had adopted a bunch of kids but lamented that his life still felt meaningless because none of the kids were his own biological children.

by the end of the series, he'd converted to straight and was married to a woman (and was depicted as happier as a result)
