Honestly, Dominus, now that the case is active again, I'd hold off for a while. You're right to want an answer, but it's a small police department in a small town, you don't know who's tight with whom, and (for now) you've got police at the department actually pursuing the case. I'd just let them pursue it for now and not do anything that might interrupt that process.
Especially now that the perp has since provided lots more evidence, which the detective has seen, to indicate that perp should be separated from innocent folks in the general population.
But do keep an eye out to make sure the case is being pursued, and have the evidence you'd use to push for an answer about why the case was labeled inactive ready in case you want to start pushing for an answer later (say, if they let the case languish again).
Of course, you might want to ask your attorney what she or he thinks.
