I think Portugese is beautiful.

It depends on who's speaking. Some people have an amazing perfect diction and accent. Those people are a pleasure to listen to! When those people talk, it does have a beautiful sound but when others talk...not so much.
It's a very versatile language when it comes to its sound. It can sound horrible but also beautiful, depending on the speaker.


Also keep in mind there's brazillian portuguese and european portuguese...though basically the same, they sound a bit different. Brazillian usually has a softer sound.



It's also interesting that there's SO many similar words in english and portuguese (and spanish, italian and french for that matter). English native speakers usually don't realize just how many, basically common, words there are between both languages.

Estava só/Só estava (it can be both ways) a brincar. (you could use "brincando" but it would be the Brazilian portuguese more common way)

No kidding! For a language that's so easy to read (for a Spanish speaker), it sure is very hard to understand, let alone pronounce it! Everything I've found about learning Portuguese is for the Brazilian version, which I'm sure is very nice, but sounds so different from that spoken in Portugal... but I'm very excited about the trip... maybe I'll just learn a few phrases and then speak English

I used to be able to understand quite a bit of Italian, but I forgot almost all of it.

I now understand very basic Japanese. . .like if an older person is talking slowly and more formally, I can get every couple of sentences.

I speak Portuguese, English and Spanish fluently. Know some French and Arabic.

English and français. Because of my French, I can read a Spanish newspaper and have a good idea what an article is about and probably pick out some important details. I'd probably miss a few too. Italian and Portuguese seem more incomprehensible. Apparently English and German are very similar but I must say it is hard to believe it.

I thought I could use DVDs to help, but our local market gets its supply from so many places that only about 1 in 20 has Spanish as a choice; surprisingly, most of them seem to have either Finnish or Turkish as an option...
