If the confederate flag is not a racist symbol..

Shows what you both don’t know..thanks to gentrification, nearly all of the projects on the west and north sides have been torn down. It’s practically yuppie central around there.

I’m embarrassed that you and I hail from the same city. #-o

Well maybe the Chicago projects, never been there, but I stand by Fort Lauderdale MLK, and Miami Overtown comments, believe me that have not been gentrified.

The swastika is actually of Hindi origins, although it's a pretty generic symbol that's probably been used in every culture throughout time. But I agree that its negative connotations suck, since it's actually a very aesthetically pleasing symbol. Wish I could wear it on clothes or as a tattoo without being labeled a nazi.

You would have better luck pulling that off if you are jewish or a semite eithnic variant, then people will catch the irony.

I would have to explain quick before violence ensued..

Damn...... lol i'm from south carolina (columbia) but i live in florida now. JUST TO BE CLEAR, i'm not trying to get into the whole is it racist or not debate. Racism is still alive and kicking,i think you would either be pretty stupid to think that it all of a sudden vanished within ONE generation. People need to realize that the civil rights movement with black americans wasn't that long ago, we as LGBT americans are fighting for our civil rights as we speak and have been doing so for decades. Its sad that our younger generations don't respect the society so many people have literally fought and died for over the years. Its simply bc most people just don't know. We don't have to generally like each other but we sure as hell can learn to tolerate and try to understand the differences we have here in this good ol' american melting pot.

Now on to that DAMN FLAG, i was in school during the whole political battle to get the flag off the state lawn. Let me tell you one thing, if people didn't show their tru colors before, they sure as hell did after.. It could be a symbol of racism, hate, rebelioussnes, anti-american, or symply "heritage". But what nobody has been able to explain to me is, what heritage is there to be so proud of that you want to wave that flag day in and day out, not just on holidays. My personal opinion is that its anti-american. think if they would have won, america would have been split in two. This topic sounds like its been done to DEATH on this forum lol but its the first time i've seen it lol. anyways if it was up to me, i'd go ahead and throw the confederate flag in with the swatstica, the symbol itself doesn't mean racism either but what it represents to the current generation is negativity..

Really?

We've learned that people lie all the time.

For all we know, a person posting as a thin, hot looking young male could actually just be an overweight, lesbian truck driver who spends their time while listening to Rush Limbaugh trolling gay male websites in order to get their kicks or to spread their own particular brand of joie de vivre.

We've seen it all before.

Not of course, that anyone thinks that you would be lying.

Actually, it'd have been split into more countries than that. Most Americans don't know that South Carolina was planning to secede from the Confederacy.

Some political observers believe that, if the South had won the war, eventually the United States would have been split into a bunch of little independent countries.

Kris, I grew up in the South during the 60s and 70s, and I can tell you from that point of view, the Confederate flag wasn't so much about hating black people as it was about hating Yankees.

The South during that time still bore the scars of the Civil War, and the Yankees, in the 70s, were still terribly rude and condescending when they came down South. You wouldn't believe what a problem that was. Is it unnatural to hate a group of people who treats you poorly?

I have heard that, after the Berlin Wall fell, the people from West Germany treated the East Germans the same way—with arrogance and condenscendence It would be interesting to know if that's still the case.

That's an interesting insight. I was recently in Atlanta and the folks were so nice, I couldn't believe it. There was a waitress that hugged my dad and "God Blessed" us pretty much to death. I can't imagine people being rude in the face of that type of kindness. But, some folks are idiots I guess.

Mbamike...How long has it been since you've taken a trip to our State Capital? I live in Columbia and as you should know the Flag was removed from the Capital roof-top back in 2000 and placed on a Flag pole on the grounds....Not that it makes much difference...

I stand corrected. Thank you.

To a lot of Blacks & Whites in South Carolina it's a "Non-Issue" considering unemployment has been so High here in SC for so many years.

You've talked about your "Black Lover" in many threads. When you tell him that the Confederate Flag is a part of your heritage how does he react? Is it simply an issue you both feel is not worthy of discussing?

To me it is a "Non-Issue." We do not talk about the Civil War, Confederate flag or anything remotely close to those topics. It is usually get naked as quick and jump into bed.

However, I did tell him that my great-great grandfather was a black man which I discovered while searching my ancestry. That freaked him out since I present as a typical blonde hair, blue eye white guy.

Agree 100% :D

If he ever does an ancestry search he might be surprised to learn that his Great-great grandfather could also be White.......

You seem like a nut bomb to me.

I was...once.

But until you understand a race of people hating their same "race" because of things such as the "Brown Paper Bag" test or the "Pencil in the hair" test.... you will have no idea what I am talking about.

You'd think one of these days it would go away, especially now, given the fact that since 2007 more than 50% of babies in the US are non-white. I guess give it another 10 or 15 years where color isn't black and white only.

I personally wish it were the same.

These days...its not just race. There has been such intermixing that it comes down to the nationalities that make up a person. Law simply has not caught up to that fact.

For example.... I have a BFF (sitting next to me) who is defined as Caucasian... but is made up of French, Latvian, Irish and Dutch blood... but yet people see some need to categorize that...Why? Must she be Caucasian?

Why should anyone be forced into a category?

everybody just calm down! hahaha

Personally I agree! There seems to be such a debate... "Is it the middle-east or is it Africa"

Quite frankly...I don't give two shits what it is in the minds of others. My "homes" (roots) are in both Scotland and Egypt. Black, White, Bi-racial, blah blah blah....don't matter to me. The confederate flag to me is history. It is a part of American History. As much as people may not want to glorify the Antebellum south....it does not mean that the confederate flag is not a part of American history.

(I'm a history buff in general).

I really think it depends on how people use the flag. If the use it to incite race issues...then they have a severe issue - simply because time has passed them by and they represent a minority of people who have not realized that rights are now equal.

(As for my race(s) - it has nothing to do with this thread. And I don't want the topic to be de-railed on my account).

It doesn't matter if it's in Africa. It's considered part of the Middle East. This is a regional and cultural grouping, it's not according to continent.

Not everyone who is of African origins is considered black.
