If you ever say you are "straight acting" that is a copout

It does?? News flash to me. Since I'm too lazy to go through 11 pages, can you please enlighten me? Anyone?

In a nutshell? Roylo85's definition of 'straight-acting' and 'racism' is the correct (and only) way of defining and viewing the terms, regardless of anyone else's opinions or experiences and knowledge. He spent ten pages attempting to be passive-aggressive and failing at it. Gays essentially use 'straight-acting' because they want to identify as heterosexual and are internally self-loathing; which is how other people (whom? He does not say) use 'straight-acting'.

Which -- when all is said and done -- is absolute horse shit.

Actually. You're both right. Depends who you ask. if you ask a sociologist, Rolyo85 will get the gold medal. I was forced to sit through hours and hours of lectures in my undergraduate listening to sociologists talk about social justice. Suffice it to say that I find the explanations and reasoning a little lackluster.

Sociology is wishy-washy nonsense, like most fields in the arts/humanities. If two black men drive up to my buddy walking down the road, kidnap him, torture him for two weeks, and then murder him, simply for the reason that he's white --- that is racism (and obviously a hate crime).

This is all really fantastically off the topic and actually it's not material to whether or not breeders if an offensive word, words can certainly be offensive or used offensively without being "racist." But you're correct youfiad and Rolyo that racism, we're talking proper racism, is systemic, not individual. It's when group forces or institutions within the community itself are enforcing individual prejudices... redlining, as an example. Or Chinese being linked to Native Americans in a court case so that the standing laws that barred Native Americans from testifying in court could be extended to Chinese, as another.

But Calum you are certainly correct that individuals can hold racist attitudes and engage in hate crimes regardless of their skin color or being in the minority or majority. The misunderstanding amongst the three of you I believe was whether we're talking about individual attitudes or proper racism, which is a line which has become incredibly blurred as racism has been simplified down into "someone thought something bad about my group once."

Sorry for off-topic, please continue.

No I can't. What the baggage of the term is, has been discussed in literally 90% of the topic. If you haven't noticed it, that says a lot about your reading comprehension. It's not a case of "I answered that in one post somewhere between pages 4-9"...

Ladies and Gentlemen I have a question for you:

WHAT SHALL WE DO WITH A DRUNKEN SAILOR!?!

(this moment of randomness brought to you by Louise, Mary, Nancy, and Helen.)

Language isn't only what's in the dictionary, it's also common use. If someone told you about a person you didn't know and said they were a racist, would it even cross your mind that they might be a white-hating Asian? No. You'd immediately think of a white guy hating black people. Because that's what the term is used for culturally. So yeah - TECHNICALLY you can be racist to anyone but that's not in any way comparable racism.

Actually, I don't automatically think of a white guy hating black people. I have several Asian friends whose parents have many preconceptions/bias/prejudice against white people (in a way, you could say they were racist towards me, but that's another story...), and I know there are whites and blacks who are racist towards Asians. In the area where I live, and from my own experience, "white hating blacks" is not the most prevalent sector of racism that I've noticed.

I would say that using racism to culturally mean whites hating blacks is a bit too much of a blanket statement for me and doesn't ring true for everyone.

I know. That was a blanket statement. I do believe it applies to the majority though.

Perhaps. I would think it applies to the majority of "Middle America", but perhaps not so much for most of California, like the Bay Area or So Cal. I also don't think it necessarily applies to the majority for the rest of the world, aside from the U.S. I have no proof either way of course, but just my feeling.

Dismiss me because you are wrong. But maybe now you can consider you are not always right in other matters :)

Probably because the approach - in this instance - is usually laced personally. Saying that rap isn't real music, or that rappers represent a lower subset of society, or they add grade school insults into the mix("you can't spell crap without rap" - which is oh-so-very-clever). It's all about intent.

In the same vein, that line of thinking is probably why people dislike straight-acting that much more - it's seen personally.

Good point.

I appreciate people who use the term straight-acting. Helps me understand who to avoid. Same with anyone who was to use the term gay-acting. Be who you are, be happy with who you are. Who you are and what you are are two totally different things. If you're not mature enough to understand that being gay isn't who you are, then we wouldn't have much in common to begin with.

There is no reason in life to act any way at all. Be who and what comes naturally. Otherwise you're not even trying to win at life.

If I jump into the crowd, I'm choosing my landing spot very carefully. And I don't intend to get back up from it for at least twenty or thirty minutes. :)
